Scenario for the party

Christmas Celebration

The aim: to get the students acquainted with traditions of Christmas celebrations in Great Britain and to maintain warm relationship

Tasks: 1. To promote the unity of the group through team work

2. To develop the interest towards learning English by learning some authentic material

3. To develop artistic abilities through dancing, miming, singing

Participants: 3-4 teams. Students of the 10 - th forms take part

Presenter 1: A warm word of welcome to everyone tonight!

Presenter 2: A warm word of welcome to everyone as we celebrate the most beloved holiday of the year – Christmas!

Presenter 1: We have prepared some of our favourite   Christmas activities, so you’ll get an opportunity to practice your English.

Presenter 2: No matter which team will be the best, remember that the main point of our celebration is to have a great time together.

Presenter 1: Let’s start with some interesting information about the background of this ancient religious holiday. Alex will start. Listen to him very attentively and if you don’t understand some words, ask him to explain.

Christmas is a joyful religious holiday when Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. The Christmas story comes from the Bible. An angel appeared to shepherds and told them that a Savior had been born to Mary and Joseph in a stable in Bethlehem. Three Wise Men from the East (the Magi) followed a wondrous star which led them to the baby Jesus to whom they paid homage and presented gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.  

Presenter 2: Let’s move to Christmas traditions. Nick will continue.

Christmas has been associated with gift giving since the Wise Men brought gifts to welcome the newborn Jesus Christ. To people all over the world, Christmas is a season of giving and receiving presents.

Presenter 1: Igor’, it’s your turn now.

Long ago, each child hung a stocking, or sock, over the fireplace. They believed that Santa entered down the chimney and left candy and presents inside the socks for them. Today the tradition is carried on, but the socks are now large red sock – shaped fabric bags still called stockings. Giving gifts is a Christmas tradition.

Presenter 2: I hope, guys, we won’t break this tradition but follow it. Here are small Christmas presents for you, take them and enjoy the happy moment.

Presenter 1: Well, Olesya, what tradition are you going to tell us about?

Important custom of Christmas is to send and receive Christmas cards, which are meant to help to express the sentiment of the season. Some of them are religious in nature, others are more secular. People begin sending Christmas cards early in December to friends, acquaintances, and co – workers. A lot of people prefer to send SMS or electronic cards with Christmas greetings nowadays.  

Presenter 2: It is impossible to imagine any holiday without singing, isn’t it, Nastya?

On Christmas Eve, there are evening church services which everyone attends. Attention is focused on the nativity scene, while all join in singing carols. On Christmas Day, there are other religious ceremonies at churches which families attend before they make their rounds to visit friends and relatives. Now, I invite all of you to sing a carol with us (sing by the guitar ”We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year”).  

Presenter 1: We say Christmas and we mean home and family. We say family, we mean Christmas dinner! Going home for Christmas is a most cherished tradition of the holiday season. No matter where you may be the rest of the year, being at “home” with your family and friends for Christmas is “a must”.  

Presenter 2 : Well- well, I think it’s time to play and have some fun. So, challenge 1. Christmas Miming Game. Every team will get a card where a word connected with the topic Christmas is written. Your task is to mime the word (candle, royal penguin, snowflake, Christmas bells). If the spectators  guess, your team will get 5 scores.

Presenter 1: challenge 2. Christmas Dance Contest. For our next challenge you are expected to create and perform a Christmas  - themed dance featuring some winter characters (polar bears, snowmen, fir – trees, Santa’s little elves). So, draw a card with the character and be ready to perform your dance in 5 minutes.

Presenter 2: challenge 3. Christmas Golden Hits Contest.  For this challenge we would like you to perform a set of well- known festive songs. Please, come here to pick the lyrics for the song. You will be given 5 minutes to rehearse the first verse and the chorus. Hits: George Michael“Last Christmas”,Michael Buble “Let it snow”, Train “Shake up Christmas”, Jingle Bells”.

Presenter 1: For our last challenge 4, we would like you to create a Cinquain - poem about Christmas. Do you remember the rules of writing cinquains? The first line - a noun, the second - 2 adjectives, the third – 3 verbs, the fourth – 4 words- personal attitude towards the topic, the fifth – resume.

Presenter 2: Well, dear guys, our party is coming to the end. Let’s see who is the winner today.

Tiny sprays of crystal

Falling from the sky.

Soft and silently they fall

A winter’s Butterfly.

Christmas is coming

And you know what else too.

Lots and lots of wishes

With lots of love for you!
