A legend of the Angara and the Yenisei In ancient time Lake Baikal was a kind and cheerful. It was very fond of his daughter Angara. She was very beautiful. The Old Grey Baikal didn’t let her daughter stay along and looked after her more than after itself. Once, when the lake fell asleep, Angara decided to run away to her boyfriend Yenisei. But the Baikal woke up and found out the plans of her daughter, raised the waves not to let his only daughter go away. There was a fierce storm, the sky turned black, the animals fled in terror, the fish dove under the water, and the birds flew away. Only the wind was blowing and splashing water. The Baikal took a rock and threw it after the runaway daughter. A rock fell right on the throat of the girl. The beautiful Angara begged her father to give her a drop of water. "I can only give my tears," - said the Baykal. Since that time the Angara has been running to the Yenisei through tears of the old lake for thousands of years. The rock, which was thrown by the Baikal, after his daughter was named the Shaman-stone by people. The people said if the Baikal would be angry, it picked the Shaman-stone, and the waters of the Baikal would gush out and flood the whole Earth. That is why the natives love the lake and keep it clean and beautiful.
