So dear pupils what do you think the main purpose of our Conference?
The purpose of our meeting today is to answer the question: what should come first in life “ The beauty” or “Morality”?-To find out what is the “Beauty “ in it’s real meaning.
During our discussion you’ll try to answer the following questions :
1/ What is paramount- the beauty of soul or beauty of body?
Goodness is a way to be beautiful, that’s why so important to have kind heart, to see other’s feelings, to forgive other’s mistakes and to love / Because if we didn’t we wouldn’t get happiness we wouldn’t being worth to say “The creature of God”
2/ Why people destroy their soul by wrongdoing? What purpose of it?-
To get more pleasures from life, to get more experience, to break up the rules, to differ from others, corruption of desires instead of feelings).
3 The third question is : How is the author show us the conclusion of immoral life , the vanity of wishes and desires?
To understand his works more clearly let’s overview his biography:
1/The first speaker report us about Oscar Wild – the king of paradoxes.
Oscar Wilde was born in Dublin on October 16, 1854. His father was a famous Irish surgeon. His mother was well known in Dublin as a writer of verse and prose. At school, and later at Oxford, Oscar displayed gift for art and the humanities. While at the university, Wilde became one of the most famous personalities of the day: he wore his hair long, decorated his room with different beautiful things. His witty sayings were well known among the students. After graduating from the university, Wilde turned his attention to writing, travelling and lecturing.
Oscar Wilde- the author of "The Happy Prince and Other Tales", "An Ideal Husband", "The Importance of Being Earnest". There is no doubt that he was the extraordinary person with perfect self-esteem .He attracted the attention of his audiences by the brilliance of his conversation.
What do you feel when you read such a description?
«Налетевший ветерок стряхнул несколько цветков с деревьев; тяжелые кисти сирени, словно сотканные из звездочек, медленно закачались в разнеженной зноем сонной тишине. У стены трещал кузнечик. Длинной голубой нитью на прозрачных коричневых крылышках промелькнула в воздухе стрекоза... Лорду Генри казалось, что он слышит, как стучит сердце в груди Бэйзила, и он пытался угадать, что будет дальше.» «The wind shook some blossoms from the trees, and the heavy lilac-blooms, with their clusteringstars, moved to and fro in the languid air. Agrasshopper began to chirrup by the wall, andlike a blue thread a long thin dragon-fly floatedpast on its brown gauze wings. Lord Henry felt asif he could hear Basil Hallward's heart beating, and wondered what was coming.
We’ll be pleased to listen to our students with their reports:
2. Speaker share us with:“Description methods of Oscar Wilde as his unrepeatable style”
As you see that Oscar Wild absolutely clearly show us the interconnection between artist Basil Hollward with GOD?He creates Dorian Grey with the intention to make a perfect picture, perfect creature and perfect man with perfect beauty and say us that he put all his heart in this work .
3, What do you think Basil say about it?
“Я чувствую, Гарри, что отдал всю душу человеку, для которого она — то же, что цветок в петлице, украшение, которым он будет тешить свое тщеславие только один летний день.” I feel, Harry, that I havegiven away my whole soul to some one whotreats it as if it were a flower to put in his coat, abit of decoration to charm his vanity, an ornamenfor a summer's day."(Бэзил Холвард)
As you know from Bible the God create a man with all the love and admiration as a part of himself and was devoted and murdered like Dorian Grey murders Basil , Creator of his portrait.
Children ,share your opinion about it. Do you agree that Oscar Wild made a interconnection between Bible and the heroes of this story? Did Basil have a wish to make a perfect man from Dorian?
And what about the Dorian? Yes, he fall in love with the picture of himself and had a wish – to have eternal beauty ,and said : “I wish I would be always so young and handsome! If I were you I would give my soul to the devil! “Of course the devil always hear us, as a God. So the dream of Dorian came true and he possessed the enternal beauty instead of his picture, which had been corrupting during his life.
So this man began to feel himself THE PERFECT man who wouldn’t pay any attentions to other’s feelings. His self – esteem increased more and more during his life as soon as his desire became true and he saw how other people depended on his beauty and used them to satisfy his curiosity and lust.
Why he couldn’t stop wrongdoing ? Because he knew that there was no sense to be afraid of doing immoral things. Also he fall under the influence of lord Henry, corrupted immoral man …
4. Speaker will say us about other heroes of this novel and how did they cooperate with Dorian /
Lord Henrylooked at him. Yes, he was certainly wonderfullyhandsome, with his finely curved scarlet lips, hisfrank blue eyes, his crisp gold hair. There wassomething in his face that made one trust him atonce. All the candour of youth was there, as well asall youth's passionate purity. Yes; there had been things in his boyhood that hehad not understood. He understood them now. Lifesuddenly became fiery-coloured to him. It seemedto him that he had been walking in fire
He never fell into the error of arresting hisintellectual development by any formalacceptance of creed or system, or of mistaking, for a house in which to live, an inn that is butsuitable for the sojourn of a night, or for a fewhours of a night in which there are no stars andthe moon is in travail.
О. Ichoose my friends for their good looks, myacquaintances for their good characters, and myenemies for their good intellects.(ЛордГенри)
To be in love is to surpass one's self. Poordreadful Mr. Isaacs will be shouting 'genius' tohis loafers at the bar. He has preached me asa dogma; to-night he will announce me as arevelation. I feel it. And it is all his, his only, Prince Charming, my wonderful lover, my godof graces. But I am poor beside him. Poor? What does that matter? When poverty creepsin at the door, love flies in through the window. Our proverbs want rewriting. They were madein winter, and it is summer now; spring-time forme, I think, a very dance of blossoms in blueskies."
Children what heroes seems the most interesting for you and why?
18 years past, Dorian had been living immoral life until his portrait became hideous .One night, before he left for Paris, Basil went to Dorian’s house to asked him about rumours of his self-indulgent sensualism. Dorian did not deny his debauchery, and took Basil to see the portrait. The portrait had become so hideous that Basil was able to identify it as his work only by the signature he affixed to all his portraits. Basil was horrified, and beseeched Dorian to pray for salvation. In anger, Dorian blamed his fate on Basil, and stabbed him to death. To escape the guilt of his crime, Dorian went to an opium den.
Dorian decided to destroy the last vestige of his conscience, and the only piece of evidence remaining of his crimes — the portrait. In a rage, he took the knife with which he murdered Basil Hallward, and stabbed the picture. The servants of the house were awaken by cry from the locked room; passers-by who also heard the cry called the police. On entering the locked room, the servants found an unknown old man, stabbed in the heart, his face and figure withered and decrepit. The servants identified the disfigured corpse by the rings on its fingers which belonged to their master; beside him was the picture of Dorian Gray, restored to its original beauty.
So children our conference is coming to the end / lets summarize what exactly the beauty is /in context of modern life ?
The last question is what is the only beauty worth living for? Is it our appearance or our heart and soul?
