THE NILOVS' FLAT

Tomorrow the Nilovs will have a house-warming party. They have got a nice flat in a new nine-storeyed house. They got it two months ago. It is a fine two-room flat on the fifth floor. Their old flat was on the ground floor3 of a very old house. They did not have such modern conveniences as running water, gas, central heating or telephone there. In their new flat there are all modern conveniences.

The two rooms are: the sitting-room, and the bedroom. They have also a nice large kitchen, a bathroom and a lavatory. In the sitting-room there is a sofa, two armchairs, a small table with a TV set in one corner. On a low round table in the middle of the room there stands a vase of flowers. On the right4 there is a writing-table. Next to the writing-tables there is a bookcase. There are many books in the bookcase. There are no photoes on the walls, but there are some pictures of well-known Russian painters. The Nilovs sometimes have tea or watch TV programmes in this room. They usually have their meals in the kitchen. The kitchen is large and there is much air there. It is clean and neat. There is a gas-stove, a table and four chairs there.

MY WORKING DAY

I usually get up at six o'clock. I open the window, do my bed, I switch on the radio, and do my gymnastics to music. Then I go to the bathroom, clean my teeth shave and wash. Yesterday I got up late. I got up at a quarter past six, so I did not do my gymnastics. I only washed and dressed. I generally help my wife to get breakfast ready and at half past six we are already at table. But yesterday I did not help her as I got up late and we were at table only at a quarter to seven. We didn't spend much time on our breakfast and as usual we left home at seven. As I live far from my plant I go there by bus. It takes me half an hour to get there. I stay at my plant till half past four and then I go to the Institute. As the Institute is not far from my plant I walk there.

Yesterday we had a meeting after work, so I stayed there till five o'clock. When I got to the Institute I was tired. I am a first-year student of a Correspondence Institute. We have classes in the evening. I attend lectures three times a week. A lecture lasts one hour and a half. When we have no classes, I come home from my work. At home I do my homework. When I get tired I play with my daughter or listen to the radio or watch TV if the programme is interesting. Generally we do not have time to go to the cinema or theatre. Tomorrow I shall not have classes, so after work I shall go home. My wife will be at home and we shall go to the cinema or theatre.

DIFFERENT KINDS OF HOBBIES

Hobby can be any type of activity, which people do during their leisure time. Most people choose a hobby for relaxation, pleasure, or for development of new interests. People of almost any age can enjoy hobbies. A hobby offers a way to relax after periods of hard work. Almost any kind of leisure activity can become a hobby. Most hobbies are divided into four general categories, which may overlap. They are the arts, collecting, handicrafts, games and sports.

There are such art forms, as dancing, drama, painting, graphic arts, and music. Each art form has many possibilities for a hobby. For example, music may include singing, playing an instrument, collecting records and tapes, learning ballet, or attending concerts or operas. Painting offers the hobbyist a wide choice of materials, such as oil paints or watercolors.

Collecting is probably the most widespread kind of hobby, because almost any thing can be collected. Stamps and coins are the most popular items. Hobbyists also collect such things as autographs books, dolls, buttons, etc.

Many of them are engaged in needlework activities, crocheting, knitting, and sewing. Some use kits to make model airplanes, boats, and trains. Other handicrafts include ceramics, metalworking, jeweler making, etc.

Games and sports are popular with many hobbyists who enjoy competition, physical activity, and exercise. Thousands of hobbyists take part in sports, such as bowling, fishing, mountain climbing, skiing, and tennis. Popular indoor games include card games, chess. Nowadays, electronics-related hobbies are becoming increasingly popular. Many people, especially children, play computer games.

MY NATIVE TOWN

There are many beautiful cities and towns in the world. I would like to visit some of them, to see with my own eyes what I have read or heard about. But there is no place like home. I love my native city. I was born here and live with my parents. It's not the capital, but it is a wonderful place to live. My city is old and modern at the same time. It is old because it was founded in the 11th century. At that time its streets were narrow, dark and dirty. Now my city looks modern because of its architecture. Almost all the buildings were built after the war. The streets and avenues are wide and clean. I live in the main street. It is the widest street in the city. A lot of cars, buses and trolley-buses run fast along it. If you want to see the places of interest in our city, you can walk along the main street. It leads to the main square. It will be a short trip, but you can see a lot: a cinema and a concert hall, an art gallery and museums, a stadium, a zoo and a large park. Our art gallery is next to the main post office. Opposite the post office there is a modern hotel. If you turn to the left, you can see a theatre. And in front of the theatre there is a museum of history and culture. Walk two blocks and you'll come to a monument to our famous writer and a fountain in the park. If you want to visit our zoo, take a bus and get off on the third bus stop. Not far from the traffic lights you will see the entrance to the zoo. Near it there is a circus. Children and tourists can't but visit it. They admire funny clowns, tamed animals, miracles and magic. There are only some churches in our city. Every evening we can hear the sound of the bells. Our city stands on the river. Parks, lanes, bridges across the river, small water falls and man-made islands add much to the beauty of the city. Just come and see everything with your own eyes. It is better to see than to hear.

AT THE DOCTOR'S

One of our first duties is to keep our body in perfect order. If our body suffers from any disorder, our mind suffers from it too and we are unable to make much progress in our studies, we are unfit to perform our duties.

There are certain laws of keeping health which are so simple that even a little child can learn them. Fresh air is very important to good health, perfect cleanliness is also essential. Every room in the house, especially bedroom should be properly cleaned. The whole body should be washed regularly. We like to look at someone who is tidy and clean. Certain exercises are also necessary to keep fit. The old and the young should do morning exercises. Rest is also important to the health of both body and mind. Plenty of food rich in vitamins are indispensable for our health, too. If one of these rules is broken we may fall ill.

The public health system has a variety of medical institutions. There are polyclinics, hospitals, dispensaries and some other medical institutions in our country. The principle of our public health protection is the prevention of a disease. It is a matter of concern not only for doctors, but for the entire society.

Last winter I fell ill. I caught a bad cold. I felt sick and giddy. I had a bad cough and was running a high temperature. I had also a cold in my head and a terrible sore throat. It hurt me when I swallowed. It was clear that I needed a doctor's aid.

My mother dialed the polyclinic and made an appointment with the doctor. In an hour or so the doctor in a white gown came' in. Before diagnosing the disease, she asked me to strip to the waist, examined my throat, felt my pulse, sounded my heart and lungs and tested my blood pressure. She said it was quinsy. The doctor told me to stay in bed for a week to avoid complications after the illness. Then she prescribed me some pills, drops and a mixture. I   was to take a table-spoonful of mixture twice a day, three pills a day after meals and some drops of medicine into my nose. Then my mother went to the chemist's to have the prescription made up.

I followed all the doctor's directions and in a week I felt much better. At the end of the week I went to the polyclinic where I had my chest X-rayed and my blood tested. Everything was all right. I recovered. The doctor gave me a sick-note and said that I was as fit as a fiddle.

THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION

The Russian Federation is the largest country in the world. It occupies about one-seventh of the earth's surface. It covers the eastern part of Europe and the northern part of Asia; its total area is about 17 million square kilometres. The country is washed by 12 seas of 3 oceans: the Pacific, the Arctic and the Atlantic. In the south Russia borders on China, Mongolia, Korea, Kazakhstan, Georgia and Azerbaijan. In the west it borders on Norway,

Finland, the Baltic States, Belarus and Ukraine. It also has a sea-border with the USA.

There is hardly a country in the world where such a variety of scenery and vegetation can be found. There are steppes in the south, plains and forests in the midland, tundra and taiga in the north, highlands and deserts in the east.

There are two Great Plains in Russia: the Great Russian Plain and the West Siberian Lowland. There are several mountain chains on the territory of the country: the Urals, the Caucasus, the Altai and others. The largest mountain chain, the Urals, separates Europe from Asia.

There are; over two million rivers in Russia. Europe's biggest river, the Volga, flows into the Caspian Sea. The main Siberian rivers — the Ob, the Yenisei and the Lena — flow from the south to the north. The Amur in the Far East flows into the Pacific Ocean.

Russia is rich in beautiful lakes. The world's deepest lake (1,600 metres) is Lake Baikal. It is much smaller than the Baltic Sea, but there is much more water in it than in the Baltic Sea. The water in the lake is so clear that if you look down you can see the stones on the bottom.

Russia has one-sixth of the world's forests. They are concentrated in the European north of the country, in Siberia and in the Far East.

On the vast territory of the country there are various types of climate, from arctic in the north, to subtropical in the south. In the middle of the country the climate is temperate and continental.

Russia is rich in oil, coal, iron ore, natural gas, copper, nickel and other mineral resources.

Russia is a parliamentary republic. The Head of State is the President. The legislative power is exercised by the Duma.

The capital of Russia is Moscow. It is its largest political, scientific, cultural and industrial centre. It is one of the oldest Russian cities.

Today there are a lot of opportunities for this country to become one of the leading countries in the world. It has great past and promising future.

AN ENGLISH-SPEAKING WORLD

Language belongs to each of us. We live in and by language. We all speak and we all listen. We are all interested in the origin of the words, in how they appear and die.

The rise of English is a story of wonderful success. In the 5th century only the people who inhabited Great Britain spoke English. But their English was not the language we know today. At the end of the 16th century, English was the native language of about 6 million people. At that time English was used only in Great Britain.

ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION

Environmental pollution is a term that refers to all the ways by which people pollute their surroundings. People dirty the air with gases and smoke, poison the water with chemicals and other substances, and damage the soil with too many fertilizers and pesticides. People also pollute their surroundings in various other ways. They ruin natural beauty by scattering rubbish and litter on the land and in the water. They operate motor vehicles that fill the air with the noise.

Environmental pollution is one of the most serious problems facing humanity today. It causes global warming, destruction of the ozone layer, and other disastrous processes. Air, water, and soil — all harmed by pollution — are necessary to the survival of all living things. Badly polluted air can cause illness, and even death. Polluted water kills fish and other marine life. Pollution of soil reduces the amount of land available for growing crops. Environmental pollution also brings ugliness to our naturally beautiful world.

The pollution problem is as complicated as it is serious. It is complicated because much pollution is caused by things that benefit people. Exhaust from cars causes a large percentage of all air pollution, but the car provides transportation for millions of people. Factories discharge much of the material that pollutes air and water, but factories provide jobs for people and produce goods that people want. Too many fertilizers or pesticides can ruin soil, but they are important aids for the growing of crops.

Thus, to end or greatly reduce pollution immediately, people would have to stop using many things that benefit them. But pollution can be gradually reduced. Scientists and engineers should work hard to find the ways to lessen the amount of pollution that such things as cars and factories cause. Governments should enforce laws that require enterprises or individuals to stop or to reduce certain polluting activities.

Radiation is an invisible pollutant that can be highly dangerous. Nuclear radiation comes from radioactive substances, including waste from nuclear weapons testing and from nuclear power plants. Small amounts of electromagnetic radiation are produced by a variety of electronic devices including computers, lasers, microwave ovens, TV sets, and X-ray machines.

Scientists have not determined exactly what effects small amounts of radiation influence people. But exposure to large amounts can cause cancer and harmful changes in reproductive cells.

International agreements ban most testing of nuclear weapons in the atmosphere. Such regulations have helped to eliminate the major sources of radiation. However, the amount of radioactive waste is constantly increasing. Scientists are studying the ways to eliminate these wastes safely and permanently.

THE INTERNET

The Internet originated in the early 1970s when the United States wanted to make sure the people could communicate after the nuclear war. This needed a free and independent communication network without a centre and it led to a network of computers that could send each other e mail through cyberspace. Tim Berners Lee invented the World Wide Web (WWW) when he discovered a way to jump to different files on his computer using the random or unplanned links between them. He then wrote a simple coding system, called HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) to create links to files on any computer connected to the network. This was possible because each file had an individual address, or URL (Uniform Resource Locator). He then used a set of transfer rules, called HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol) to link Web files together across the Internet. Berners Lee also invented the world’s first browser. This lets you locate and view Web pages and also navigate from one link to another.

The WWW became available to everyone in 1991 and the number of Internet users grew from 600,000 to 40 million in five years. Today, that number is miles larger and there are now many browsers that provide Web pages, information and other services. A SUMMARY OF THE DRILLING PROCESS

            An oil well is created by drilling a hole 5 to 36 inches (127.0 mm to 914.4 mm) in diameter into the earth with a drilling rig, which rotates a drill string with a bit attached.

These are the key steps involved in drilling a well:

  1. The drill bit, assisted by the weight of drill string and drill collars above it, breaks up the earth.
  2. Drilling fluid (‘mud’) is pumped down the inside of the drill pipe and exits at the drill bit, helping to break up the rock, keeping pressure on top of the bit, as well as cleaning, cooling and lubricating the bit.
  3. The generated rock ‘cuttings’ are swept up by the drilling fluid as it circulates back to the surface outside the drill pipe.
  4. The cuttings and returning fluids are monitored for abnormalities to detect any possible ‘kicks’ in pressure.
  5. The pipe or drill string to which the bit is attached is gradually lengthened as the well gets deeper by screwing in several 30-foot (10 m) joints of pipe at the surface.

This process is all facilitated by a drilling rig which contains all necessary equipment to circulate the drilling fluid, hoist and turn the pipe, control down hole pressures, remove cuttings from the drilling fluid and generate onsite power for these operations.

The first oil wells were drilled in China in the 4th century or earlier. They reached depths of up to 243 metres and were drilled using bits attached to bamboo poles. The Middle East’s petroleum industry was established by the 8th century, when the street of the newly constructed Baghdad were paved with tar, derived from petroleum that became accessible from natural fields in the region.

The first modern oil well was drilled in 1848 by Russian engineer F.N. Semyonov on the Asheron Peninsula north-east of Baku. By 1861, Baku produced about 90% of the world’s oil. The word ‘petroleum’ derives from two Greek words meaning ‘rock oil’. When Edwin Drake struck oil in the first US discovery in 1859, he was actually boring for salt. Until the 1970s, most oil wells were vertical. Using deviated and horizontal drilling it has become possible to reach reservoirs several kilometers away from the drilling place.
