Тема урока: Welcome to Orel.

Методическая цель: создание на уроке условий для интеллектуального и эмоционального развития обучающихся.

Познавательная цель: знакомство с историей  и современностью родного города, с биографиями знаменитых земляков.

Учебная цель: совершенствование речевых навыков чтения и говорения.

Воспитательная цель: более глубокое осознание родной истории и культуры средствами английского языка.

Orel.

 Orel is one of the regional centers of the Russian Federation. It lies 382 km south from Moscow. The population of the town is over 350,000. Now Orel is a large industrial and cultural town.

 Orel was founded in 1566. Four centuries ago a fortress was built at the confluence of the Oka and the Orlik to guard the frontiers of the Moscovy. It was founded by the order of Ivan the Terrible. It protected the southern borders of the Russian State. Over the four centuries of its existence Orel has took part in many historic events. Orel played the greatest role in the history of the Great Patriotic War. Its liberation was marked by the first artillery salute in honor of the victory of the Soviet troops in the Battle of Orel and Kursk. The sights of Orel include the monument to the tank men who fell in the battle to liberate to town in 1943; the monument to Major-General Gurtyev, a hero of the battles of the Volga and of the Orel-Kursk Bulge.

Many outstanding Russian writers and poets lived and worked in Orel such as Leskov, Apukhtin, Tyutchev, Fet, Bunin, Prishvin and others. Orel is the birth place of Ivan Turgenev, the great Russian writer. They described the noble spirit of the Russian people and the beauty of Russian landscape. There are many museums and galleries in Orel. Among points of interest in the town is the Turgenev Literary Museum, the Leskov Museum, the Bunin Museum, the Museum of Orel writers, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Regional Studies, the Museum of N. Rusanov, one of the Russian polar explorers and others. Orel is famous for its theatres. The Turgenev Drama Theatre is one of the oldest theatres in Russia. It is over 150 years old.Many famous Russian actresses and actors such as Yermolaeva, Komissarghevskaya, Savina, Shchepkin, Ernesto Rossi, and others gave performances there. Orel is a town of students. There are some higher schools, many colleges and secondary schools in our town, for example, the Polytechnic University, the Teacher’s Training University, the Institute of Culture, the Commercial Institute and the Agricultural University. Orel is a very green city and there are many forests around it.

The most popular kinds of sports in Orel are skiing, skating, cycle racing, football, gymnastics, acrobatics and horse racing.  We are proud of our town. You are welcome to Orel.
