Ход урока

Good morning / afternoon!

Christmas is coming!

I think, at the beginning of our unusual lesson, you’d better listen to the poem “The Night Before Christmas”. It was written in 1823 but is still very popular all around the world.

(Teacher recites the poem. Students can see the text and watch the slide-show on the screen).

First Part (lines 1-18)

Look at the first part of the text (lines 1-18) and let’s try to describe Christmas Eve.

1. Find and read out the lines answering the questions:

  1. Was it noisy or quiet in the house? (line 2)
  2. What showed that the children were waiting for Santa Claus? (lines 3-4)
  3. Were the children sitting by the fireplace? (line 5)
  4. Why did the boy get out of his bed? (line 9)
  5. What did the boy see through the window? (lines 15-18)

2. Now, describe what happened in your own words.

Second Part

Read lines 19-32 very attentively.

Now don’t look at the poem and answer the questions:

  1. How many reindeer were there with Santa Claus? (8)
  2. How many names of Santa Claus’ reindeer do you remember?
  3. Where did St. Nickolas leave his sleigh and courses before entering the house? (on the roof of the house)
  4. Guess the meanings of the names of the reindeer.

Third Part

Find the lines of the poem which say the same things in a different way:

  1. He was warmly dressed.
  2. He was dirty from head to foot.
  3. He was carrying something.
  4. He resembled a street salesman.
  5. He was smoking.
  6. He was not thin at all.
  7. He didn’t have a frightening look.
  8. He got down to business at once.

Whole Poem.

Mime:

  1. Line 12
  2. Line 47
  3. Line 50
  4. Line 51
  5. Line 52
  6. Line 53

Snowball Game

There is a list of all St. Nickolas’ actions on the screen.

Your task is to restore a sentence looking at the verb. The sentence should be grammatically correct.

St.1: St. Nickolas whistled.

St.2: He whistled and shouted.

St.3: St. Nickolas whistled and shouted. He called his reindeer by name.

Now, you can recite at least a part of one of the most beautiful poems related to Christmas!

Happy Christmas to you!

Приложение.

The Night before Christmas  (1823)

by Clement Moore

    ‘Twas the night before Christmas when all through the house

     Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;

     The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,

     In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there.

5   The children were nestled all snug in their beds,

      While visions of sugarplums danced through their heads;

     And Mamma in her kerchief, and I in my cap,

     Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap –

     When out on the lawn there rose such a clatter;

10  I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.

      Away to the window I flew like a flash,

      Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

      The moon on the breast of the new fallen snow,

      Gave a luster of mid-day to objects below,

15   When, what to my wondering eyes should appear

       But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,

       With a little old driver, so lively and quick,

       I knew in a moment it must be St Nick.

       More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,

20    And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

       “Now, Dasher! Now, Dancer! Now, Prancer and Vixen!

       On, Comet! On, Cupid! On, Donner and Blitzen –

       To the top of the porch to the top of the wall!

       Now, dash away, dash away, dash away all!”

25   As leaves that before a wild hurricane fly,

       When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,

        So, up to the house top the coursers they flew ,

        With a sleigh full of toys – and St Nicholas, too.

       And then in a twinkling I heard on the roof,

30   The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.

       As I drew in my head, and was turning around,

       Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.

      He was dressed all in fur from his head to his foot,

      And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;

35   A bundle of toys he had flung on his back.

      And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

      His eyes how they twinkled, his dimples how merry!

      His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry;

      His droll little mouth was drawn like a bow,

40   And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow.

      The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,

       And the smoke, it encircled his head like a wreath.

       He had a broad face, and a little round belly,

      That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly.

45   He was chubby and plump – a right jolly old elf;

      And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself.

      A wink of his eye, and twist of his head,

      Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

      He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,

50   And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,

      And laying his finger aside of his nose,

      And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose.

      He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,

      And away they all flew like the down of a thistle;

55   But I heard him exclaim, ’ere he drove out of sight.

      “Happy Christmas to all

       And to all a good night.”
