Marcy is the character of Paula Danziger's book "The Cat Ate My Gym suit". Read the passage from the book and write down the information that corresponds to description of Marcy best. (matching)
I hate my father. I hate school. I hate being fat. I hate the principal (Br headmaster) because he wanted to fire (уволить) Ms Finney, my English teacher.
My name is Marcy Lewis. I'm thirteen years old and in the ninth grade Dwight D. Eisenhower Junior High.
All my life I've thought that I looked like a baby blimp (увалень) with glasses (очки) and mousy brown hair. Everyone always said that I'd become an adolescent (teenager) blimp with glasses, mousy brown hair, and acne (прыщи).
My life is not easy. I know I'm not poor. Nobody beats me. I have clothes to wear, my own room, a stereo, a TV, and a push-button (с кнопками) phone. Sometimes I feel guilty being so miserable, but kids have problems too.
Stuart, my four-year-old brother, wants to be my best friend so that I can help him to put orange pits (косточки) in a hole in his teddy bear's head.
I never had any friends, except Nancy Sheridan. She's very popular, but her mother and mine are old friends, so I always believed that Mrs. Sheridan made her talk to me — Beauty and the Blimp. School is a bummer (безделье). The only writing I could do was letters to the Student Council suggestion box. Lunches are lousy (отвратительные). We never learned anything good, at least till Miss Finney came along. So my life is not easy.
Complete the fact file about Marcy. Use the information from the passage. There is an example (0) at the beginning. (note making)

- How is Australia often called?
- Where is Australia situated?
- What is the capital of Australia?
- How many people live in Australia?

There are many names for Australia. Its official name is the Commonwealth of Australia, but very often Australia is called “the Lucky Country”. The name “the land Down Under” is associated with Australia, too. The continent and the island of Tasmania make up the Commonwealth of Australia. Australia is situated to the south of the equator. It is washed by three oceans and four seas. Australia is divided into six states and two territories. It is the sixth largest country in the world, but it has a small population of more than eighteen million people. Although Sydney is the largest city, it isn’t the capital. Australia is a federal state and, like the USA, it has a separate capital city, Canberra, which isn’t in any of the states. Australia’s official language is English. When people think of the wildlife in Australia, such animals as the kangaroo, the koala, and the emu comes into their minds. Most Australians are of British origin. When people moved from Great Britain to Australia, they brought their own customs and traditions with them. For example, Australians also drive on the left side of the road, like drinking tea, and English sports, especially cricket and rugby are very popular. Australians are kind, simple and energetic people. They love their country and are very proud of it.

Text for listening
Last summer I visited Canada. It’s a very big and interesting country. Canada is the second largest country in the world. It occupies northern part of North American continent and borders on the United States in the south and in the north-west. The country is washed by the Atlantic Ocean in the east and by the Pacific Ocean in the west.
The climate of Canada is rather cold: winters are usually long and snowy and summers in Northern Canada are short and cool. Summers in Southern Canada are longer and warmer.
Canada is divided into ten provinces. The biggest provinces are Quebec (which is the largest province of Canada), British Columbia and Ontario.
The capital of Canada, Ottawa, is situated in Ontario.
English and French are the official languages of the country. English is the first language for most Canadians, but in Quebec province French is the main language.
The flag of Canada has two red vertical stripes and a big middle vertical stripe with a red maple leaf in the centre. Queen Elizabeth II is not only the Queen of Great Britain, but of Canada as well.
Niagara Falls is the most beautiful city in Canada. Tourists from all over the world come here to see the Canadian Falls or the Horseshoe.
Canada is a very interesting country to visit!

Listening
Listen to the story and answer the questions.
Talking about British school it's hard to know where to begin because there's so much to say. First of all, children start school at the age of four or five. After primary school they go to secondary- school which is usually from 11 to 16. But of course many pupils stay at school until they are 18.
What British students study at school seems very much the same to me as what they study in Russian schools. They study English, the first modem language always French.
And the second language is German or Spanish or Russian.
Russian isn't taught in very many schools. I'm sorry to say. I think Russian is a very important language because Russia is very important world power. And I would like Russian to be taught more often. My children Kathy and Robert learn Russian at their school in Newcastle.
Some subjects taught in Britain are not the same as those taught at your school. Some of them are Religious Studies. Art and Drama of Science. For instance Science is mixture of Biology, Chemistry and Physics and is taught in a very practical way.
In fact I never liked any of these subjects. That’s why, I teach English Literature at Newcastle Universities now!
All grown-ups remember their school years. Listen to the story told by an Englishman. Answer the questions:
- At what age do students finish school in Britain?
- What first language is studied in British schools?
- What kind of a subject is Science?
- Why is it important to study Russian?
Reading
In Great Britain there are different types of secondary schools. Most of them are state schools where education is free. But some parents choose to pay for private education. Private (or public) schools in England and Wales are very expensive and they are attended by about 5 per cent of the school population.
The education in public schools is of high quality, the discipline is very strict. Most of private schools are either for boys or for girls.
Public schools are famous not only for their perfect education but also for the right friends and contacts which are useful for a successful future.
In some British schools uniforms are worn by all the pupils, in others the children can wear what they want to. Some public schools in Britain, such as Eton, have uniforms based on what was worn over a hundred years ago.
Some private schools are very famous, such as Eton, Harrow, Rugby and Winchester.
Harrow school is famous as the place where Winston Churchill was educated, as well as six other Prime Ministers of Great Britain, the poet Lord Byron and many other prominent people.
About 90 per cent of all children in the USA attend state or public schools where education is free. In other words 43 million pupils and students go to public schools and another 6 million are in private schools.
In private schools parents have to pay for their children's education. Most of the private schools have religious education, too.
The relations between students and teachers in state schools are democratic and friendly. In American public schools students wear whatever they want.
Students can choose the subjects they want to study. They often take part in non-academic activities such as sports, drama clubs, school newspaper or radio.
Americans think that each person should achieve all that he or she can.
But some Americans believe that the quality of education is going down. They think that the number of basic subjects is few, students watch too much TV and do too little homework.
Answer the following questions. Use the texts if needed.
- What are "Schools of Air"? Where are they?
- How does "School Through the Mailbox" work?
- Which schools in all countries are attended by most students: state or private ones?
- Why do people choose private education?
- What is the difference between public schools in Great Britain and in the United States?

People need vitamins to stay healthy. "Vita" means life in Latin. People get vitamins from the food they eat. There are a lot of vitamins in fruit and vegetables. But you can hardly find any useful vitamins in Coke, chips and other fast food. Each vitamin is responsible for different things in the human body. There are about ten major vitamins. They are usually named by a letter of the alphabet (А, В, C, D, etc.)
- Vitamin A is in green and yellow vegetables, milk and eggs. It's necessary for seeing in the dark.
- Vitamin В1 is in meat, porridge and bread. B1 is responsible for the nervous system. Lack of this vitamin leads to serious illnesses and even death.
- Vitamin С is in every fruit and vegetable. You can find this vitamin in black currants, strawberries, oranges and grapefruits, onions, cabbages and green peppers. Vitamin С is important for building bones and teeth. It helps to prevent colds.
- Vitamin D is in eggs. People can also get it from sunlight. It makes our bones strong.
