Exercise1. Read and retell the story

The Little Red Hen

This is the Little Red Hen. Her name is Jen, or Jen the Hen.

Jen the Hen has three little chickens. They are little. They are yellow. They are very, very nice.

Jen the Hen and her three chickens live in a little house in a forest.

Jen the Hen has three friends. They are a cat, a dog and a duck.

The cat's name is Pam, or Pam the Cat. He is grey. His eyes are green. His tail is long. He is a big fat cat.

The dog's name is Tug, or Tug the Dog. She is black and white. Her eyes are brown. Her ears are long. Her tail is short and funny. She is a big dog.

The duck's name is Chuck, or Chuck the Duck. She is brown. Her tail is very short. She is a big fat duck.

Jen the Hen has five seeds. She is counting the seeds now. "One, two, three, four, five. I have five seeds."

"Help me to plant the seeds, please," she says to her friends.

Pam the Cat says, "I don't want to help you. I want to play with a mouse."

Tug the Dog says, "I don't want to help you. I want to play, too."

Chuck the Duck says, "I don't want to help you. I want to swim."

"Can you help me to plant the seeds?" Jen the Hen says to her little chickens.

"Yes, we can," they say.

Pam the Cat is not working now. He is playing with a mouse. Tug the Dog is not working. She is playing with a ball. Chuck the Duck is not working. She is swimming.

Jen the Hen and her little chickens are working now. They are planting the seeds.

Jen the Hen says to her friends, "Help me to make bread." "We don't want to makebread. We want to sleep." Now Jen the Hen is making bread and her little chickens are helping her.

"Do you want to help me to eat the bread?" says Jen the Hen.

"Yes, I do," says Pam the Cat. "I am hungry."

"Yes, I do," says Tug the Dog. "I am hungry, too."

"Yes, I do," says Chuck the Duck. "I am very hungry."

"Yes, we do," say the chickens. "We are very hungry, too."

"But now I don't want to give you the bread," Jen the Hen says to Pam the Cat, Tug the Dog and Chuck the Duck. "I want to give the bread to my little chickens. They are nice and kind. They usually help me."

The Fox's breakfast

The Fox lives in a house in the wood. One morning he says, "I have nothing for breakfast. I must go out and find something for breakfast." So he goes out to find something for breakfast. On the way he meets a Hen. When the Hen sees the Fox, she wants to run away.

"Don't run away," says the Fox. "I don't eat hens. Come and talk to me."

"Where are you going?" asks the Hen. "I am going for a walk and back home again," says the Fox. "You may come with me. I can take you on my back." "Thank you," says the Hen. So the Fox takes the Hen on his back and runs along the road. On the way he meets a Bird.

When the Bird sees the Fox, she wants to fly away.

"Don't fly away," says the Fox. "I don't eat birds. Come and talk to me."

"Where are you going?" asks the Bird.

"I am going for a walk and back home again," says the Fox. "You may come with me. I can take you on my back."

"Thank you," says the Bird.

So the Fox takes the Bird on his back and runs along the road. On the way he meets a Mouse. When the Mouse sees the Fox, she wants to hide in the grass.

"Don't hide in the grass," says the Fox. "I don't eat mice. Come and talk to me."

"Where are you going?" asks the Mouse.

"I am going for a walk and back home again," says the Fox. "You may come with me. I can take you on my back."

"Thank you," says the Mouse.

So the Fox takes the Mouse on his back and runs along the road. Soon he comes to his house.

"This is my house," says the Fox. "Now let us have breakfast, and then I can carry you home."

When they are all in the house, the Fox closes the door and says, "Now I can have my breakfast. Come here, Hen. I want to eat you up."

"Why do you want to eat me up?" asks the Hen.

"Because you run in the garden all day long and never, never work." And the Fox eats the Hen up.

"Come here, Bird," he says. "I want to eat you up."

"Why do you want to eat me up?" asks the Bird.

"Because you sit on the roof all day long and never, never work." And the Fox eats the Bird up.

"Come here, Mouse." But the Mouse is not there.

Soon she comes in with a Man, and the Man kills the Fox.

The Mouse sits down and laughs, "Ha, ha!"

The Fox and the Sheep

An Old Woman lives all alone. One day she goes to the market and buys some sheep.

So she walks and walks through the wood, but she cannot find anybody to look after her sheep. At last she meets a Bear.

"Good morning," says the Bear. "Where are you going?"

"I'm looking for a boy to look after my sheep," says the Old Woman.

"I can look after your sheep," says the Bear.

"Can you be good to them?" asks the Old Woman. "Can you talk softly to them?"

"I can talk very softly," says the Bear. And he begins, "Ugh! Ugh! Ugh!" All bears talk like that.

"No, no, no!" cries the Old Woman. You cannot talk like that to my sheep. They may run away."

So she leaves the Bear in the wood, and she walks and walks, till she meets a Wolf.

"Good morning," says the Wolf. "Where are you going?"

"I'm looking for a boy to look after my sheep," says the Old Woman.

"I can look after your sheep," says the Wolf.

So the Fox goes home with the Old Woman, and she takes him to the field.

In the field the sheep are eating grass. All day long the Fox looks after the sheep. At night he brings them safely home. But the next night one of the sheep is missing.

"Where is my sheep?" asks the Old Woman.

"I don't know," says the Fox.

The next morning the Old Woman goes to the field to give the Fox some milk. And there the Fox is standing over a dead sheep. Now the Old Woman knows that the Fox kills her sheep. 18

"You bad, bad Fox!" cries the Old Woman. The Fox is very much afraid, and he runs away. But the Old Woman throws the milk at him, and some of it falls on the tip of his tail.

That is why every fox has a white tip on his tail.

By and by she meets a Duck. "Where are you going, Grey Hen?" asks the Duck. "The sky is falling," says the Grey Hen. "I am going to tell the Turkey." "May I go with you?" 'asks the Duck.

"Yes, you may," says the Grey Hen. "Let us go to the Turkey together."

So the Grey Hen and the Duck walk and walk. By and by they meet a Goose. "Where are you going, Grey Hen?" asks the Goose. "The sky is falling," says the Grey Hen. "We are going to tell the Turkey." "May I go with you?" asks the Goose. "Yes, you may," says the Grey Hen. "Let us go to the Turkey together."

So the Grey Hen, the Duck and the Goose walk and walk. By and by they meet a Fox. "Where are you going, Grey Hen?" asks the Fox. "The sky is falling," says the Grey Hen. "We are going to tell the Turkey." "Come to my house," says the Fox, "the sky is not falling there." "Very well!" says the Grey Hen. So the Grey Hen, the Duck, the Goose, and the Fox walk and walk. By and by they come to the Fox's house.

"This is my house," says the Fox. "Come in, please."

They all go into the Fox's house, but they never come out again.

The Three Pigs

Three pigs live in a house near a wood. The three Pigs are brothers. One is a big pig, and his name is Big Pig. One is a middle-sized pig, and his name is Pig just Pig. One is a little pig, and his name is Little Pig.

The three pigs dance all day long and sing:

"We are happy brother pigs, We are happy piggy-wigs, We have time to dance and play, We are happy all the day."

One day they go out for a walk. They walk and walk, and by and by they come to a big wood. Big Pig says, "I cannot see our house." Pig says, "I cannot see our house." Little Pig says, "I cannot see our house." "Let us build a little house," says Big Pig.

"Build a house yourself! I am tired," says Pig. "I don't want to build a house."

"Build a house yourself. I want to go to bed," says Little Pig. "I don't want to build a house."

So Big Pig goes along the road.

Pig goes along another road.

And Little Pig goes along another road.

Little Pig wants to go to sleep, but he cannot go to sleep, because he has no house. He goes along the road and meets a Man with some hay on his back.

"Oh, I can build a house of hay," he says to himself.

So he says to the Man, "Please, Man, give me a little hay, I want to build a house."

The Man gives him some hay, and Little Pig builds a house of hay.

When the house is ready, he dances and sings:

"I have a little house of hay, I have a little house of hay, I have time to dance and sing, * I have time to play." When night comes, he goes to bed.

By and by the Big Bad Wolf comes, knocks at the door and says, "Little Pig, Little Pig, let me in."

But Little Pig does not let him in. He laughs, and dances, and sings:

"Who's afraid of the Big Bad Wolf,

Big Bad Wolf, Big Bad Wolf?

Who's afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?

La, la, la, la, la!"

Then the Big Bad Wolf says, "Let me in, Little Pig. I can puff and puff and blow your house down, then I can eat you up."

Then Little Pig is afraid. He jumps out of the window and runs away.

And the Big Bad Wolf puffs and puffs and blows the house down. But Little Pig is not there!

Pig is very tired, but he cannot rest, because he has no house. He goes along the road and meets a Man with some sticks on his back.

"Oh, I can build a house of sticks," he says to himself. So he says to the Man, "Please, Man, give me a few sticks. I want to build a house." The Man gives him some sticks, and Pig builds a house of sticks.

When the house is ready, he dances and sings:

"I have a little house of sticks, I have a little house of sticks, I have time to dance and sing, I have time for tricks."

When night comes, he goes to bed. By and by the Big Bad Wolf comes, knocks at the door and says, "Pig, Pig, let me in."

But Pig does not let him in. He laughs, and dances, and sings:

"Who's afraid of the Big Bad Wolf, Big Bad Wolf, Big Bad Wolf? Who's afraid of the Big Bad Wolf? La, la, la, la, la!"

Then the Big Bad Wolf says, "Let me in, Pig. I can puff and puff and blow your house down, and then I can eat you up."

Then Pig is afraid. He jumps out of the window and runs away.

And the Big Bad Wolf puffs and puffs and blows the house down. But Little Pig

is not there!

Ilig Pig wants to build a house. He goes along the road and meets a Man with some bricks on his back.

"Oh, I can build a house of bricks," he nays to himself. So he says to the Man, "I* I ease, Man, give me a few bricks. I want to build a house."

The Man gives him some bricks, and Big rig builds a house of bricks.

When the house is ready, he dances and .sings:

"I have a little house of bricks, I have a little house of bricks, I have time to dance and sing, I have time for tricks."

By and by the Big Bad Wolf comes, knocks at the door and says, "Big Pig, Big Pig, let me in."

But Big Pig does not let him in.

"Let me in, Big Pig," says the Big Bad Wolf. "I can puff and puff and blow your house down, then I can eat you up."

But Big Pig does not let him in.

The Big Bad Wolf puffs and puffs, but he cannot blow the house down.

The Wolf is very angry, and he says, "Gr-r! I can eat you up. I can climb up on the roof and come down through the chimney."

So he climbs up on the roof and comes down through the chimney and — falls into a big pot of hot water on the stove.

Just then Little Pig and Pig knock at the door.

"Who is there?" asks Big Pig. "It's me," says Little Pig. "It's me," says Pig.

"Come in, please," says Big Pig, and he opens the door.

When Little Pig and Pig see that the Big Bad Wolf is dead, they laugh, and dance, and sing:

"Who's afraid of the Big Bad Wolf,

Big Bad Wolf, Big Bad Wolf?

Who's afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?

The Big Bad Wolf is dead!"

On the way home they see a Fox. The Black Cat runs away. The Grey Cat goes on with the basket. Soon she meets the Fox.

The Grey Cat puts down the basket and runs away.

The Fox takes the basket. He wants to carry it home.

On the way he meets the Dog. The Fox puts down the basket and runs. The Dog runs after him.

The Grey Cat and the Black Cat come back. They take the basket and carry it home.

The Camel and the Jackal

A Camel and a Jackal live together in a village. The Jackal is naughty, and he likes to make fun of the Camel.

One day the Jackal and the Camel go to the bank of the river. The Camel lies down under a tree and falls asleep. The Jackal walks along the bank and eats as many crabs as he can find.

"Dear me!" says he, "I'm still hungry. I know there are many crabs on the other

35side of the river, I can't swim, but the Camel can."

So he runs up to the Camel and cries, "Get up, Camel, come and eat some sugar cane."

When the Camel hears the word "sugar", he jumps up and cries,

"I'm coming! I'm coming!"

"It is very sweet sugar cane," says the Jackal. "I must show you where it is. Take me across the river on your back."

"Very well," says the Camel. "Sit on my back, and let us swim across the river."

The Jackal climbs upon the camel's back. Soon they are on the other side of the river. The Jackal shows the Camel where the sugar cane is, and then he runs off to eat crabs.

Camels are very large, and Jackals are very small. So the Camel eats for a long time and still has not enough.

Soon the Jackal eats up all the crabs on the other side of the river, and he wants to go home.

"I don't want to wait for the Camel," says the Jackal to himself. "I am ready to go home."

So he runs and runs about the field, and laughs and sings. The people hear him and say, "There is a Jackal in the field." And they come out with sticks and stones.

But the Jackal is not there. They find the Camel and beat him with sticks, and throw stones at him.

By and by the Jackal comes back.

"Are you ready to go home?" he asks the Camel. "You are not a good friend," says the Camel. "You always make fun of me. You are naughty. You always laugh, and sing, and then you run away. The people come and throw stones at me, and beat me. Why do you always make such a noise?"

"Oh, I don't know why I make such a noise," says the Jackal. "I always laugh and sing after dinner."

"Oh, do you?" says the Camel. "Well, now let us go home."

So the Camel takes the little Jackal on his back once more, and begins to swim across the river.

In the middle of the river he stops.

"What's the matter?" asks the Jackal.

"Oh, I don't know," says the Camel. But I want to roll over."

"Don't do that," says the Jackal. "I can't swim. Why do you want to roll over?"

"I don't know," says the Camel. "I always roll over after dinner."

So the Jackal is drowned, but the Camel comes safely home.

A friend in need is a friend indeed

It is winter. It is very cold. The sky is grey. The forest, the field and the lake are white with snow.

So he eats one carrot, takes the other and runs to Brother Rabbit's house. Brother Rabbit has nothing to eat. He puts on his warm clothes and runs to the field to get something to eat. There he sees four carrots. He is very happy.

He takes the carrots and brings them home. He eats only two carrots because he wants to give the other two to Brother Goat.

Brother Rabbit takes the two carrots and runs to Brother Goat's house.

Brother Goat is not at home. Brother Rabbit puts the carrots on the table and goes away. When Brother Goat comes home, he sees the carrots on the table. He thinks, "Oh, what good friends I have. I must be a good friend, too. It's winter now. Brother Rabbit has nothing to eat. I must help him."

Brother Goat comes into the house, puts the carrot on the table and writes a short letter for Brother Rabbit: "Dear Brother Rabbit! This carrot is for you. With best wishes from Brother Goat."

Brother Rabbit doesn't hear anything. In the morning, when he gets up, he sees the carrot and the letter on the table. He reads the letter, eats the carrot and thinks, "Oh, what good friends I have!"

When I go shopping, I take my mother, my little brother, my yellow basket, my red umbrella and my brown bear Barney. When I play with my friend Fred, I take my bike, our old dog Charlie, two apples from our tree, my boots and my brown bear Barney. When I go gardening, I take my father, my straw hat, my wheelbarrow, my. spade and my brown bear Barney. When I go to the beach, I take my mother, my father, my little brother, special things to eat, my sunglasses and my brown bear Barney. When I go to my grandmother, I take my pajamas in a suitcase, a flower in green paper, a tasty tidbit for her cat, some carrots from my garden and my brown bear Barney. When I go to bed, I take a good book or two, our old dog Charlie, an apple for the morning, my big silver flashlight and my brown bear Barney. When I go to school, next year or the next, I'll take a new school bag, some lunch, my dinosaur badge and a pencil with an eraser on the end. But not my brown bear Barney. My mother says that bears don't go to school. We'll see about that!

The Cat with Shoes

A farmer had three sons: Pete, Bob and Tom. Pete was the eldest son. Tom was the youngest. He was a nice, kind, clever and industrious boy. When Father died, Pete, the eldest in the family, got the house. Bob got the horse, and Tom, the youngest, — only the cat. But it was the cat with shoes.

Tom and the cat were very good friends. Tom was very kind to the cat. One day the cat said to Tom: "You are very kind to me. I want to make you rich and happy. I shall try my best to do it. Give me a hat, a bag and a pair of shoes, please!" Tom gave the cat all these things. One day the cat put the bag in the forest with some bread in it and caught a very big rabbit. Then the cat went to the King. He said to the King: "Oh, King! Prince Tom sends you this rabbit as a present."

"Thank Prince Tom for the very nice rabbit," said the King.

The next day the cat said to Tom: "Go to the river, take off your old clothes, give them to me and jump into the river."

Tom and the cat went to the river. Tom took off his old clothes, gave them to the cat and jumped into the water. The cat hid Tom's old clothes in the grass.

That river was near the King's palace. The cat ran into the palace and said to the King: "Oh, King! Prince Tom is in the river! And I don't know where his beautiful clothes are! So Prince Tom can't get out of the water! Please, give him some beautiful clothes!"

"Certainly! With great pleasure!" said the King, and gave the cat beautiful clothes! Then the cat wanted to give Tom a beautiful house.

On the top of a hill there was a beautiful house where a giant lived.

One day the cat went to the giant and said: "People say that you can change yourself into any animal. Is that so?"

"Yes, I can change myself into any animal!" answered the giant. "Can you change into a lion?" asked the cat.

"Of course I can," said the giant and changed himself into a lion.

"Can you change yourself into an elephant?" asked the cat.

"Certainly I can," said the giant and changed himself into an elephant.

"Oh, I think it was easy for you because you changed yourself into big animals. But I am sure that you can't change yourself into a little animal, into a mouse," said the cat.

"Yes, I can," said the giant and changed himself into a mouse. The cat ate the mouse.

That is how the cat got a beautiful big house for Tom. Then the cat invited the King to Tom's beautiful house. The King was very pleased with the house and with Tom.

Very soon Tom married the King's daughter, a beautiful Princess. So Tom, the beautiful Princess and the cat lived very happily together in that beautiful big house on the top of a hill.
