Teacher: Good morning dear children and guests. I’m glad to see you at our International Ecological conference. We are here to listen to your projects devoted to the problem of environment and to discuss several questions connected with pollution and other environmental problems.
Look at the plan of our conference.

Leader: What are the most serious environmental problems?

P1: In my opinion the most serious environmental problem is pollution in its many forms (water pollution, air pollution and nuclear pollution).
P2: To my mind the most serious environmental problems are global warming, the greenhouse effect and acid rains.
P3: I think one of the most important problems is deforestation.
P4: I am worried about destruction of wildlife and countryside beauty.
P5: I am very concerned about noise from cars and buses and the growth of population.

Leader: Now it’s time to listen to your projects.
You were divided into 4 groups. And each group has created its own project.
What have you done to prepare for your projects?

P 3 I have found a text about water pollution in the Internet.
P 4I have found some pictures in the magazines.
Now it’s time to present your projects to your classmates from other groups and answer your classmates’ questions. Please, don’t forget to express your point of view
(P1: Our project is devoted to the problem of pollution. We represent the world famous organization ‘Green peace’. )
Project 1 “Forms of Pollution”
P1: There is no denying that pollution in its many forms is one of the most serious environmental problems. From the very start I should say that the word pollution means making water, air and soil dirty and dangerous for people and animals to live in.
In my opinion, pollution is the result of the harmful effect of the human activity.
A lot of lakes, rivers and seas are used as a dump. Many plants and factories throw away their industrial waste into the water. There is not enough oxygen in the water. Fish and reptiles can’t live in poisoned water. They leave their habitats and die.
P2: Every year the world’s industry pollutes the atmosphere. The polluted air mixes with the rain and causes holes in the ozone layer. You certainly know that most of the pollution in big cities comes from cars and buses. To make the air clean we need good filters at factories and plants, as well as on cars and buses. Chemical pollution of the atmosphere also causes acid rains.
P3: Many seas are used for dumping nuclear waste. The Pacific Ocean, especially, has suffered from nuclear pollution because the French Government tested nuclear weapons there. Besides nuclear power stations can have accidents and cause nuclear pollution. It can’t be seen, but its effect can be dangerous.
The nuclear accident in Chernobyl has seriously aggravated the ecological situation in Belarus. Both clean air and clean water are necessary for our health. If people want to survive, they must solve these problems quickly. Some years ago our government decided to build a Nuclear Power Station not far from Kostroma but all people of our region were against it. So the Nuclear Power Station wasn’t built.

Project 2:“Greenhouse Effect”
We are the representatives of the World Wildlife Fund. P2: Our project is about the ‘Greenhouse effect’.
P1:In the last few years the world has been full of stories of hurricanes, floods, droughts and other disasters caused by the weather. Scientists agree that something very serious is happening to the world weather. They now think that in the future the globe may get warmer. Winters have already become warmer because we are producing too many ‘greenhouse gases’. People breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. We also make carbon dioxide when we burn woods or drive cars.
P2:Other dangerous gases are in refrigerators and aerosol cans. These gases hold the heat which can’t go back into space. The matter is that carbon dioxide and other toxic gases work like glass in the greenhouse. They let heat get in it but don’t let much heat out. Trees take these gases from the air and produce oxygen. But in the last few years people have cut down a lot of rainforests. This means fewer trees and more carbon dioxide. So the atmosphere becomes warmer.
Project 3:
P1 We are the members of the environmental group Friends of the Earth. We have done a leaflet. Here you can have a chance to create your own poem and do a crossword. (ученики 3 группы раздают свои буклеты ученикам из других групп)

Leader: Listen to the text ‘Pollution in London’ and answer the question “What problem is the boy worried about?”
I live in London. There are so many cars in the streets of the city that pollution is awful. Air is made dirty and I really think our health is affected. I think it would be a good idea to have a ‘no car day’ Everybody would have to use other forms of transport – like buses, trains, bikes, or even just your feet – for one day. There wouldn’t be so much pollution and the roads will be so much safer. We are only part of the environment. That’s why we should understand what the problems are and how we can help.

VI. Презентация проекта 4-ой группой учащихся
Teacher: You are going to listen to another project about ecological problems in Rostov. The students of this group are very concerned about water and air pollution in Rostov.
Project 4 ‘Eco Problems in Rostov’
P1Rostov-on-Don is one of the beautiful cities of Russia. It is situated upon the both banks of the river Don. We are worried that the river is in great danger because local industry pours its waste into the water. A lot of people wash their carpets and cars in the river. Many different factories dump chemical waste into atmosphere and pollute the air in our city. We find the situation in our town worrying.
P2I am very concerned that forests around Rostov are cut down. We find the situation worrying because new trees are not planted.
People throw too much litter and in the wrong place. They have picnics near the banks of the Volga and leave a lot of rubbish – plastic bottles, tins and paper. If people don’t throw away litter and put their litter in the bins, they reduce pollution! Keep your city tidy!
VII. Leader : What can we do to help nature?

Dear Mayor,
P1You know that polluted air, water and land are harmful to plants, animals and people. As a result of our investigation we have found out that Rostov is polluted. We find the situation worrying.
First of all, we are worried about water pollution. The local industries pour their waste into the Don. The pollution kills a lot of fish and baby ducks. If people drink poisoned water, they will die too.
We are very concerned about air pollution in Don.
P2The plywood Factory throws a lot of dirt into the air. It is polluting the atmosphere in our hometown. It needs good filters to make the air clean.
We are also very worried about trees in the centre of the city. A lot of trees were cut down. Baby trees were not planted. We think that trees and flowers make our city more pleasant.
We are concerned that there is not enough litter bins in our town. Just think of all the litter around.
In conclusion, we think that local authorities should invest in new technologies and industries that won’t badly damage the environment.
