The Story of the First Christmas

Scene I

The Speaker: Once upon a time there was a young woman named Mary. She lived in a town called Nazareth. God knew she was a fine person. One night He sent His angel Gabriel to speak to her. (Mary is sleeping. Angel appears.)

Mary: What is happening?

Angel: Don’t be afraid, Mary! Our Lord is very pleased with you. That’s why He is going to do a wonderful thing to you. You are going to be the mother of God’s Son. You will soon have a baby. This child will be great. He will come to the Earth to save people. Our Lord will make Him king, and His kingdom will last forever. His name will be Jesus! (Angel disappears.)

Mary: Oh, I know! God is blessing me!

Scene II

Speaker: Mary was pleased and surprised. Soon she married a poor carpenter named Joseph. They started a family. God took the life of His Son from Heaven and put it inside Mary.

Joseph: Right away the baby began to grow inside her as other babies grow inside their mothers. But this baby was very special, He was God’s Son.  

Scene III

The Speaker: Seven months later. The Caesar Augustus, the Great Roman King gave on order.

Announcers: Everyone must return to the place where the family has come from to pay taxes!

Mary: We’ll have to go to Bethlehem.

Joseph: It’s going to be a long trip.

The speaker: It was a long trip, and Mary was soon to have a baby.

Scene IV

Joseph: Let’s find some place to stay. ( knock at the door)

Inn-keepers: No room!

Joseph and Mary: (kneel) Dear God, please, help us some place to stay! (knock at the door)

Inn-keeper: I’m sorry, everyone is here to pay taxes and the inn is full. There is no room here!

Joseph: But look! We traveled all the way from Nazareth and my wife is about to have a baby we must find a place!

The inn-keeper: Well, maybe I could help you. See, I have a stable down the road. It’s nothing fancy but you can stay there if you like.

Joseph: Oh, thank you very much!

Mary: We’re so greatful to you! (later to Joseph): Of course, it’s an unusual place to have a baby, but I’m so thankful to God for providing it!

Scene V

The speaker: At the same time on the hill-side the shepherds were watching the sheep.

(Angel appears.)

Angel: Glory to God in the highest! Peace on Earth to men of good will! (the shepherds are afraid)  Don’t be afraid! For today the saviour, Christ the Lord is born in Bethlehem! You’ll find him in a stable, lying in a manger.

Shepherd 1: Let’s go and see!

Shepherd 2: It seems to be a miracle!

Shepherd 3: I couldn’t believe my eyes! (going to the stable)

Joseph: Hello! Please come in.

Shepherd 1: I can’t believe my eyes! The angel was right!

Shepherd 2: What is his name?

Mary: Jesus!

Scene VI

(Three wise men are looking into there books. Suddenly the star appears. One of the men points to the star.)    

Wise Man 1: Do you see this bright star? That’s the star we’ve been waiting for. It will lead us to the important person we have been expecting to come to the world.

Wise Man 2: Yes, we have to go and look for Him!

Wise Man 3: Let’s start off right now. Follow the star.

Scene VII

(Herod is sitting in the chair. Guards are standing beside him.)

Speaker: After a 12-day journey they got to Jerusalem. They went straight to the palace of Herod, king of Jerusalem to ask about the Child.

Wise Men: Long live the king!

Wise Man 1: Your Majesty, we’ve come to see the Child who is to be the king of the Jews.

Wise Man 2: We first saw the Child’s star when we were in the East.

Wise Man 3: We have come to worship Him.

Herod: (to the audience) What? Another king? I don’t want another king! I am the king!            (to the wise men) Do you, wise men, know where exactly the promised king will be born?

Wise Man 3: The books say, in Bethlehem.

Herod: Go and search the baby. When you find Him, let me know. I want to go and worship Him too.

Speaker: But, really, Herod wanted to find the Child and kill Him! So, the star moved ahead of the men and stopped over the place where the child is.

Scene VIII

(Mary is holding the baby in her lap. The wise men enter.)

Wise Men: Blessed you be, good people.

Joseph: God bless you, good people. Please come in and sit by the fire.

Wise Man 1: We have come to worship the Child who has to save the world.

Wise Man 2: We saw His star and decided that this baby is to be the greatest of all people.

Wise Man 3: We have brought gifts to the holy child. May we approach Him?

(The tree wise men come to the baby and put the presents.)

(Angel appears. He speaks to the tree wise men.)

Angel: I must warn you, good people. Herod wants to kill Jesus, so don’t tell him where the baby is. (Wise Men leave Mary and Joseph and Jesus.)

Speaker: God warned the wise men and they returned home by another road without visiting Herod. When Herod learned about that, he got very angry. He ordered to kill all the boys in Bethlehem two years and under. But God warned Joseph in a dream, and he with his family left for Egypt.
