Задание 1 Task 1. You are going to read the text aloud. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then be ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud. The ninth planet of the solar system was discovered not long ago. It happened in 1930. Scientists had been hunting for the planet for a long time. They had calculated its probable position but there was no proof that the planet really existed. It was too far away for the telescopes of that time to find it. It’s worth mentioning that the first photos of the planet were taken by a very young researcher. He was only twenty-four and had no formal education in astronomy. However, he was deeply involved in the search for the ninth planet. The planet at the edge of the solar system was called Pluto, after the Roman god. The name for the planet was suggested by an 11-year-old British girl.

Задание 3 Task 3. You are going to give a talk about reading books. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and speak for not more than 2 minutes (10–12 sentences). Remember to say: • what kind of books modern teenagers enjoy reading; • whether libraries are necessary nowadays or not, and why; • what book you have read recently, and what it was about; • what your attitude to reading is. You have to talk continuously.

1. A book has a wonderful power to influence our minds and lives. 2. I believe that modern teenagers read a lot, but I cannot judge about the genre, as tastes differ. 3. I have been reading since I was 5 years old. 4. I remember that my grandma took me to the library, and we chose my first book together. 5. I think that nowadays libraries still play an important role, not only as sources of collections of books but also as cultural centres . 6. For example, I have recently finished " Harry Potter" by a popular British writer J. K. Rowling. 7. I have read it in Russian before, this time I tried my best to read it in English. 8. We have recently had a meeting at the local library, where we were discussing this masterpiece for 2 hours. 12. Every time I read or talk about various books I enjoy every moment. 13. Задание 1 T ask 1. Imagine that you are preparing a project with your friend. You have found some interesting material for the presentation and you want to read this text to your friend. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, then be ready to read it out aloud. You will not have more than 1.5 minutes to read it. There is nothing fancy or expensive about happiness. On the contrary, happiness is simple and slow. It means choosing peace and quiet over excitement. It is wearing your old pyjamas and watching a movie the day before Christmas. It is sitting in your window watching the weather while sipping your favourite tea on a rainy day. It is looking into the bonfire surrounded by your friends and family while your bread is slowly baking. Happiness is always about appreciating the simple pleasures in life and thus it can be achieved on a really low budget. You cannot buy the right atmosphere or a sense of togetherness. It’s all about time, interest and engagement in the people around you. Thus, happiness is an atmosphere which is not improved by spending more money on it, but rather, in some ways, the opposite. After all, the best things in life are absolutely free.

Задание 4 Task 4. Imagine that you and your friend are doing a school project “Sports activities”. You have found some photos to illustrate it but for technical reasons you cannot send them now. Leave a voice message to your friend explaining your choice of the photos and sharing some ideas about the project. In 2.5 minutes be ready to: • explain the choice of the illustrations for the project by briefly describing them and noting the differences; • mention the advantages (1–2) of the two sports activities; • mention the disadvantages (1–2) of the two sports activities; • express your opinion on the subject of the project – which of the sports activities presented in the pictures you’d prefer and why. You will speak for not more than 3 minutes (12–15 sentences). You have to talk continuously.

Hey, Kate. You know what? I’ve just found two pictures suitable for our project “Sports activities”. Let me tell you a bit more about them . These pictures are relevant to our project because there are people doing sports. In the first photo there is a man playing football outside. In the second picture there is a girl swimming in the swimming pool. Obviously, both of these pictures are related to sport and healthy lifestyle. But there are differences to illustrate our project better. In the first picture a man is playing a sport game and probably he is not alone, while in the second picture a girl is doing an individual kind of sport . In my opinion, the both sports activities have their advantages. For instance, playing football is fun as well as it is a team game. As for swimming, people don’t need to have a partner, they can do it alone. Of course, the two sports activities have disadvantages too. For example, football is a contact sport so players can get injured. At the same time, swimming is rather boring especially if it is long distances . As for me, I’d prefer playing football, because it’s a team game. And it is much more famous. Millions of people all around the world love to spend their time watching football matches and I’m one of them. I’m a big football fan. Moreover, sometimes my friends and I play football in the school yard during the breaks . So , shall we use these photos in our project? Call me when you’re ready to discuss if we can use them.
