Tsarskoe Selo. The Town of Pushkin.

In 1918 the town got another name – Detskoe Selo. Then in 1937 it became Pushkin. The history of the town of Pushkin began in the 18th century. Tsar Peter the Great gave this place to his wife, Ekaterina Alekseevna, the future Empress (императрица) Catherine I. The first palace was built in 1724. From that time people began to name the place Tsarskoe Selo.

Now there are a lot of places of interest in the town of Pushkin. One of them is the Lycee (лицей) Museum. The Lycee was the school where Alexander Pushkin spent six years, made some school friends and wrote a lot of poems.

In spring I travelled to the capital of Russia. I flew there by plane. My Russian friends met me in the airport and I spent three days with them. I liked Moscow because it is a wonderful city. On the first day of my visit my girlfriend Lena took me to Red Square, I enjoyed this amazing place, I also liked the Kremlin. After that we visited the Bolshoy Theatre, the great place of Art in Moscow. We saw the performance and liked it very much. In the evening we walked along the streets of Moscow and admired old and modern building of it.

Christmas in Great Britain

Christmas is a religious festival, celebrated on the 25th of December.

Before the holiday people decorate their homes with Christmas trees, stars and ornaments. City streets are filled with coloured lights and decorations.

Children write letters to Santa Claus and tell him what presents they would like to get. Many supermarkets hire (нанимают) people to wear a Santa Claus costume and listen to children's wishes. People send greetings cards to relatives and friends and buy Christmas gifts.

A Christmas tree is one of the main symbols of Christmas in most homes. Relatives and friends decorate the tree with lights, balls, toys and colourful ornaments. Presents are placed under the tree. On Christmas Eve or Christmas morning, families open their presents.

Many children believe that Santa Claus comes on Christmas Eve in a sleigh (сани) pulled by a reindeer and brings presents. Some children hang up stockings by their beds so Santa Claus can fill them with sweets, fruit and other small gifts.

Groups of people walk from house to house and sing Christmas carols (гимны), they raise money for poor people.

A lot of people go to the church on Christmas Eve. They listen to readings from the Bible and singing Christmas carols.

A traditional Christmas dinner consists of stuffed turkey,  mashed potatoes and some other dishes. Some families have ham or roast goose instead of turkey. Pumpkin pie, plum pudding and fruitcake are favourite desserts.

Easter

Britain is full of customs and traditions. A lot of them have very long histories. Some are funny, some are unusual. But they're all interesting and are all part of the British way of life.

Easter is an important religious festival, people celebrate that Jesus Christ raised from the dead (воскрес из мертвых) and lives forever. Many people decorate eggs and give them each other. At Easter children get gifts of chocolate eggs and chocolate rabbits. Eggs and rabbits (symbols of new life) are traditional symbols of Easter in the British Isles.

The best-known English Easter food is the hot cross bun (булочка с изображением креста).  This sweet treat with fruit is very popular at Easter.

On Easter Sunday a lot of people go to the church. They listen to readings from the Bible.

Easter parades are also an important tradition, during which people wear their new clothes. Later the family  have  Easter lunch or dinner, which in England traditionally consists of roast spring lamb, potatoes and green peas.

Easter is a festival that is not always held on the same date each year. Easter Day is celebrated on Sunday in the end of March or in April.

Easter always means spring, new life after winter, flowers, green trees and young animals: usually chickens or lambs.

The United States of America is one of the greatest countries in the world. It is situated on the North American continent and is washed by three oceans: the Pacific, the Atlantic and the Arctic.

Last summer was full of good things. In June my parents and I went to Italy for a week. The weather was warm and sunny. And the nature in this country is beautiful. We swam a lot in the sea, we sunbathed, then we went on some excursions to see the historic places around the country.

I met a nice girl from France there. We became friends. Now we write letters to each other. I hope she will visit me here in Moscow next summer.

When I came back from Italy, I went to visit my grandparents. They live in a village which is not very far from Moscow. The air there is always fresh and clean. At my grandparents’ I have some good old friends, so I wasn’t bored there. I spent a lot of time outdoors. We played basketball, hide-and-seek, and even went to pick mushrooms once. I should say that summer was great and the weather was always wonderful! It’s a pity, that my favourite season ended so quickly.
