Introduction
The subject of our work is “Australian must see attractions”. We have chosen this very subject for researching because Australia has always been interesting for me. The desire to learn more about this unusual country started during the lessons of Geography. More over I enjoy travelling and I hope that some other day I will have an opportunity to visit Australia and its famous landmarks.
Goal:
To deepen the knowledge about Australia on the example of Australian must see attractions.
Tasks:
- To find information about Australia in different resources
- To collect information about Australian attractions
- To find out the most important sights
- To find and to present the detailed information about Australian must see attractions.
The Basic Part
The Theoretical Part
We have consulted different Internet recourses, encyclopedias on Geography, student books and collected some general facts about Australia.
In 1606 the continent of Australia was opened by the expedition of Bill Yanzonson. Later James Kook opened the east coast of Australia.
The climate of Australia is very dry so it is very hot here. Most of Australia's exotic flora and fauna cannot be found anywhere else in the world. It contains an amazing ecosystem with unique flora and fauna including pristine rainforest, ancient rock formations and beautiful beaches.
There is the biggest chain of volcanoes in the world in Australia. It is the 6th largest country in the world, occupying an entire continent of some 7.6 million square kilometers. It has the world's 3rd largest ocean territory, spanning three oceans and covering around 12 million square kilometers. Vegetation covers nearly 7 million square kilometers or 91 percent of Australia.
Today's Australia is very multicultural with Indigenous peoples and migrants from some 200 countries. Almost all Central part of Australia is not populated and the majority of people live on the coasts in the cities. The official language of Australia is Australian English. Over 200 different languages and dialects are spoken in Australia including 45 Indigenous languages. The most common non-English spoken languages are Italian, Greek, Cantonese, Arabic, Vietnamese and Mandarin. The capital of Australia is Canberra. Canberra was selected as the capital because Sydney and Melbourne could not stop arguing which city should be the capital of Australia. The wattle is the national floral emblem.
“Advance Australia Fair” is the national anthem of Australia.
The coat of arms of Australia is the formal symbol of the Commonwealth of Australia. The focal point contains the badges of each Australian state. The Red Kangaroo and Emu that support the shield have never been designated as official animal emblems of the nation. It is often claimed these animals were chosen because neither animal can move backward, only forward – i.e. symbolising progress. In reality both animals can move backwards, although only infrequently.
The flag of Australia is a national flag. In 1901, Australia became a single country, instead of six separate colonies. A competition was held to design a new flag for the new country. The winning flag has a blue background, the Union Jack, and six stars. Debate continues today on the calls to change the Australian flag because of the prominence of the British Union Jack, which does not reflect contemporary Australian society.
Practical Part.
Australia is known for many things and it would be impossible to see the country and experience all on a single trip. But there are places and activities that should be at the top of any traveler’s bucket list, whether he’s a foreign tourist flying in from afar or a native Australian looking to explore his own country.
I decided to consult I- net resources to find out the main Australian attractions. Most of them give approximately the same information about must see Australian attractions. They are: The Sydney Opera House, Great Barrier Reef, Uluru, The Twelve Apostles, Great Ocean Road. In the course of my work I’ ve made a survey about Australian attractions among my classmates to check I-net rating. The survey shows high awareness about Australian landmarks and proves that The Sydney Opera House, Great Barrier Reef, and Uluru are the main sights of Australia.
Now I we suggest that we should give detailed information about must see Australian attractions.
The Sydney Opera House
It goes without saying that the most recognizable building and is an icon of Australia's creative and technical achievement is The Sydney Opera House. Sydney Opera House is located in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is just as Pyramids represent Egypt, in the same way, the Opera House represents Australia. It is the focal point of Sydney's culture since its inception in 1973. It has become one of the busiest centers of performing art in the world. Sydney Opera House is a magnificent piece of architecture that has universal acclaim. It took 7 years to build the model of the opera house and 17 years to complete the actual building.
Great Barrier Reef
The Great Barrier Reef is one of Australia’s most amazing and remarkable natural attractions that truly offers breathtaking beauty. The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef in the world and is home to an astonishing 3000 reef systems, numerous picturesque tropical islands, golden beaches and coral cays. Along the coast of Queensland, it offers some amazing opportunities for tourist to enjoy. These activities include, but aren’t limited to:
- Glass bottom boat viewing
- Scuba diving
- Helicopter tours
- Aircraft tours
- Educational trips
- Semi-submersibles
- Whale watching
- Dolphin swimming
- Cruise ship tours
Listed as one of the seven natural wonders of the world, it’s larger than the Great Wall of Chinа and is the only thing living on earth that can be seen from space. Because of the beauty it possesses, it’s a must see in anyone’s lifetime.
Uluru (Ayers Rock)
Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, is another must see Australian attraction that should be on everyone’s bucket list. Uluru is located in the Northern Territory and is the largest rock formation made from sandstone in Central Australia. Located 335km from Alice Springs, Uluru stands 348m high, is 3.6km long, and is 1.9km wide. It’s believed that the rock was created over 600 million years ago. It originally sat at the bottom of the sea but today stands proudly above the ground. It lies west of the Simpson Desert and has been a sacred place for the Aboriginal community and culture for over 10,000 years.
Across the day, Uluru will appear to change colour with a vibrant red at sunset and dawn.
It’s important to note however, that climbing on certain areas of Uluru may be prohibited due to the respect of the Aboriginal culture. It’s advised against climbing unless you’re with a tour guide who knows and respects the wishes of the Aboriginal culture and beliefs.
The Twelve Apostles
The Twelve Apostles are located in Victoria near Port Campbell National Park and are well known as the collection of limestone stacks that are off the shoreline. These must see Australian attractions can be viewed from the Great Ocean Road and because of their closeness to one another, it’s become a popular tourist attraction across the years. While today there’s only around eight apostles left due to erosion industry.
The Twelve Apostles were first formed by extreme weather conditions that contributed to the erosion that the Southern Ocean has been culprit to over the years.
When visiting Victoria, don’t forget to drive along the Great Ocean road and view this magnificent sightseeing opportunity.
Conclusion.
Summing up our researching work, we should say that we have deepened the knowledge about Australia. The information about must see Australian attraction that was found and was analyzed gives us grounds to claim that the Sydney Opera House, the Great Barrier Reef, Uluru and the Twelve Apostles are must see Australian attractions.
