Shakespeare in our life……
Good afternoon, everybody. We are glad to see you here at the Literary Salon. I hope all of you will take an active part in it. We are going to speak about one of the world’s greatest playwright and poet William Shakespeare. Have you recognized the man? No doubt! You have.
Shakespeare’s position in the world is unique. His plays, written in the late 16th and early 17th centuries for a small theatre, are now performed and read more often than ever before. Shakespeare’s contemporary, the poet and dramatist Ben Jonson, said that Shakespeare “was not of an age, but for all time,” and it turned out to be true.
The name of William Shakespeare is known all over the world. The last half of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th centuries are known as the Golden Age of English literature. It was the time of the English Renaissance and sometimes it is called “The Age of Shakespeare”
People often call Shakespeare “Our National Bard”, “The Immortal Poet of Nature” or “The Great Unknown”. We really know few facts of his life and many of them are doubtful, but some facts are well known and proved by documents. Listen to some facts about W. Shakespeare`s biography and the time when he lived and worked.
Early years
William Shakespeare was born on the 23rd of April, 1564, in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon which is situated in the centre of England. At that time, Stratford had only eight or nine streets and fewer than 1,500 inhabitants. It was a market town, where the local farmers could bring their crops, animals, and other goods to sell.
His father, John Shakespeare, was a glove-maker and wool-dealer. He was a well-to-do merchant. William’s mother Mary Arden, was the daughter of a rich farmer in the village of Wilcote. His parents had eight children. William was the third child in the family.
Слайд : At the age of six he was sent to grammar school, At school he learned to read and write. He also studied Latin and Greek. But he had to leave it at the age of 13. When his father, John Shakespeare, fell into debt, William had to help him.
Слайд : At that time there were no theatres in England. Groups of actors traveled from town to town and played in different places, usually out-of-doors. Sometimes actors came to Stratford. Young William went to see all their shows and liked them very much. He wanted to become an actor. Sometimes he wrote little plays himself and put them up with his friends.
Слайд : At the age of 18 Shakespeare married a local girl, Anne Hathaway. She was the daughter of the local landowner. Anne was 8 years older than her husband and the marriage wasn't a happy one. In 1583 Anne gave birth to their daughter Susanna. In 1585 the couple had twins – son Hamnet and daughter Judith. Unfortunately, Hamnet, the only son of William Shakespeare, died at the age of 11.
Life in London
Cлайд : In 1585 Shakespeare left for London. At that time he was 21. He lived and worked in this city for many years. During that time Shakespeare worked as an actor and did other jobs at the theatres. Shakespeare wrote plays and acted for numerous companies.
Слайд : When, in 1592, the Plague closed the theaters for about two years, Shakespeare turned to writing poetry. During the same period, Shakespeare was writing his sonnets (a special type of poem with 14 lines), which are more likely signs of the time’s fashion rather than actual love poems detailing any particular relationship. He returned to play writing when theaters reopened in 1594.
Слайд : Later he became a member of the Chamberlain’s Men where he remained for the rest of his career. This company was a very successful acting company in London. He became a successful playwright. Shakespeare’s career continued to develop. In 1599 a theatre was built on the south bank of the River Thames. It was named the Globe. The Globe Theater was built by the Chamberlain’s Men. This group consisted of “excellent actors who were also business partners and close personal friends who worked together as equals. It was the theatre where Shakespeare's best plays were performed. Shakespeare became one of the partners in the Globe theatre.
Слайд : The Globe was rather different from modern theatres. The plays were performed in the open air and the audience got wet if it rained. There was no scenery, and the only lighting was the daylight that came from the open roof above. Women in those days weren't allowed to act in public and all the parts (even Juliet!) were played by men. Much of the audience stood to watch the performance and moved around, talking with each other and throwing fruit at the stage if they didn't like something.
In 1606 Shakespeare was a very successful playwright. He became a wealthy man. Work at the theatre made Shakespeare a rich person. He was not only a playwright, he also took part in theatrical performances. He was also an actor, but not a very good one because he usually acted only small parts. William Shakespeare headed the theatre “Globe”.
Later years
Слайд : In 1611Shakespeare returned to Stratford. He bought the largest house there, called “New Place”. He didn’t act any more. Since 1613 he no longer wrote plays. Nobody knows what he did during the last years of his life. Some research shows that at the end of his life he was in poor health. Eventually, he died on the 23 of April 1616. It’s incredible but it is true that he died on his birthday at the age of 52.
He was buried in Holy Trinity Church where he had been baptized exactly 52 years earlier. A monument was erected in honour of the great playwright in Westminster Abbey,
Учитель Слайд : In 1613, the Globe theatre was destroyed in a fire. For Shakespeare and his colleagues it must have been a terrible time. However, a modern reconstruction of the theatre was built near the original site in 1997 so even today you can go to the Globe Theatre to see one of Shakespeare's plays
Shakespeare’s works
Comedies All's Well That Ends Well As You Like It The Comedy of Errors The Merchant of Venice The Merry Wives of Windsor A Midsummer Night's Dream The Taming of the Shrew Twelfth Night The Two Gentlemen of Verona | Histories Richard II Henry IV Henry V Henry VI Richard III Henry VIII | Tragedies Romeo and Juliet Julius Caesar Macbeth Hamlet King Lear Othello Antony and Cleopatra |
Shakespeare created 37 plays: historical dramas, comedies and tragedies. His experience as an actor helped him greatly in writing of his plays, His knowledge of the stage, and his poetical genius made his plays the most remarkable literary works. Shakespeare seemed to know human nature. The characters in his plays seem like living people with their weaknesses. There are many heroes among them, fine soldiers, and not too clever countrymen, tender ladies, and tigers in women’s clothing. Shakespeare seemed to be able to show us almost every kind of man and woman, good and bad, and to know how to touch all our feelings, from sad to joyous.
Слайд : Shakespeare wrote 37 plays: 10 tragedies (such as Hamlet, King Lear, Othello, Macbeth), 17 comedies (such as As You Like It, Twelfth Night, Much Ado About Nothing), 10 historical plays (such as Henry IV, Richard III.), 154 sonnets. He also left 7 books of poems.
Слайд : The first period (1590- 1600) of Shakespeare’s creative work consists of comedies and historical dramas. In this period he wrote such histories as “King Henry the IV”, “King Henry the V”, “King Richard the II”, “King Richard the III” etc. Here the author showed historical events and dramatic characters. Shakespeare’s early tragedy is “Romeo and Juliet”. “Romeo and Juliet”, It is one of his best plays. It’s a tragedy but it is full of love, youth and humanism. He wrote comedies such as “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “A Comedy of Errors”.
Слайд : Speaking about his famous tragedies, I can say that they appeared in the second period of his literary work between 1600 and 1608. In the plays of this time, the dramatist reaches his full maturity. It is the summit of Shakespeare’s art. 1608 Shakespeare wrote his four great tragedies “Hamlet”, “King Lear”, “ Macbeth”, “Othello”. His works are masterpieces of the world literature. Apart from that Shakespeare wrote 154 sonnets. His sonnets were published in 1609, shortly before his retirement.
Слайд : The dramatist’s plays of the third period (1609- 1611) are called Romantic Dramas. They are “The Tempest”, “The Winter’s Tale” and “Henry VIII”. In “The Tempest” Shakespeare says farewell to the theatre, to his friends.
Most of Shakespeare's plays were not published in his lifetime. Some of them may have been lost in the fire when the Globe burnt down in 1613.
Учитель Слайд : William Shakespeare had a natural gift for comedy. In his comedies Two Gentlemen of Verona, As you Like It, The Twelfth Night William Shakespeare describes the adventures of young men and women, their love, friendship, happiness.
Слайд : Shakespeare’s plays are interesting. His historic works tell the stories of the early English kings: of poor, weak Richard II, clever Henry IV, and brave Henry V. Others tell the tragic stories of the ancient world: the murder of Julius Caesar; Mark Antony, the Roman general, who lost the empire through his own weakness and foolish actions. Other plays recount the tales of imaginary characters: of Portia, the noble lady who saved the life of her husband’s friend.
Shakespeare's tragedies King Lear, Othello, Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet depict noblemen who opposed evil in the world.
Слайд : Much ado about nothing. The young couple — Hero and Claudio will marry in a week. Time goes, and they bet with Don Pedro that will bring together the bachelor Benedict with the self-confident Beatrice, his old acquaintance. While the villain Don John wants to ruin Claudio's wedding, accusing Hero of being unfaithful. It seems difficult to find out the truth but, fortunately, two couples find their happiness and love.
Слайд : In 1594 he wrote The Taming of the Shrew, - (Укрощение строптивой) a famous comedy in which a character Petruchio wins a bet for having the most “disobedient” wife Katherina.
Слайд : In 1599, Shakespeare wrote Hamlet one of his greatest works. It is a very philosophical play. Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, is a highly intelligent person. The main character is Prince Hamlet, who wants to revenge his Uncle Claudius for poisoning his father, King of Denmark. Danish prince Hamlet bitterly grieves over the died father. But suddenly he with horror finds out: he has not died, he was killed. The murderer- Hamlet’s uncle- not only has inherited throne of the king, but also married his widow- Hamlet’s mother. Hamlet is probably his most quoted tragedy. Hamlet’s most popular quote is: “To be, or not to be; that is the question…”
Слайд : Romeo and Juliet is the most famous love story and tragedy of all time. Young Romeo and Juliet- the characters of the first great tragedy love each other. Unfortunately, they died but they did not stop loving each other . They stayed young forever! It is one of Shakespeare’s best plays. This play is full of love, youth and humanism. Romeo and Juliet fell in love with each other and love changed them: they became wiser and more beautiful. In an unequal duel with century by prejudices, with the bloody and senseless laws, Romeo and Juliet perish.
Слайд : In “King Lear” we see evil defeated. “King Lear” is the greatest of all Shakespeare’s tragedies. We cannot help feeling sorry when we see poor old King Lear walking around in the storm, made mad by the cruelty of his two daughters. The plot of the story about an old king of England and his three daughters was not invented by Shakespeare.
Othello. Othello, the nobleman who murdered his sweet, innocent wife after listening to the lies of an evil man.
Sonnets appeared in Italy, in the 13th century. But when we say “sonnet” we immediately remember Shakespeare. Sonnets are generally love poems, and many Shakespeare’s sonnets are addressed to some unknown lady whom we call “The Dark Lady of the Sonnets”. Love is an overwhelming feeling. And Shakespeare’s sonnets glorify love to an ordinary woman whose “eyes are nothing like the sun”. In this poem the speaker finds himself attracted to a woman who is not beautiful in the conventional sense. Sonnets make us think about true and false beauties. Shakespeare’s poetry is a hymn of love. But Shakespeare also knew friendship. And 126 of 154 sonnets are dedicated to his unknown “Fair Friend”. The sonnets unfold a whole story. Shakespeare and his Friend were both in love with the same woman, the Dark Lady. It was really upsetting for Shakespeare, because he felt he was betraying his friend. However, he needed both of them, and sometimes he sounds quite lonely and desperate. They deal with the great themes of love and friendship, life and death, change and immortality. The sonnets are full of harmony and music, praise love, friendship and beauty Shakespeare’s sonnets are translated into Russian by Marshak/
Then hate me when thou wilt, if ever, now
Now while the world is bent my deeds to cross,
Join with the spite of Fortune, make me bow,
And do not drop in for an after-loss.
Ah do not, when my heart has scaped this sorrow,
Come in the rearward of a conquered woe;
Give not a windy night a rainy morrow,
To linger out a purposed overthrow.
If thou wilt leave me, do not leave me last,
When other petty griefs have done their spite,
But in the onset come; so shall I taste
At first the very worst of Fortune's might;
And other strains of woe, which now seem woe,
Compared with loss of thee, will not seem so.

Sonnet 130
He died in the 16th century but his plays are still popular. Nowadays many people like them. We laugh and cry with Shakespeare’s characters. Let’s imagine that we are at the theatre. The candles are burning, the spectators are talking quietly, and the actors are ready for their performance. Suddenly the candles go out in the theatre hall and the performance begins.

In the town of Verona, in Italy, there were two rich families: The Capulets and The Montegues. There was an old quarrel between them, and when The Capulets met The Montegues, they always began to fight. There was a daughter Juliet in The Capulets family, who was fourteen. And there was a son, Romeo, in The Montegues family, who was sixteen. One day Romeo’s friend Mercutio was invited to the Capulet’s party. And he took Romeo with him. They wore masks on our faces. When dancing Romeo saw a young and beautiful girl, whom I didn’t know and he fell in love with her. But Juliet’s cousin Tybalt, recognized Romeo and wanted to fight with him. The fight didn’t take place, because old Capulet didn’t give his permission… Romeo had to leave the house but he didn’t go home, he went into the Capulet’s garden to talk to Juliet. She couldn’t sleep that night, because she fell in love with Romeo too. She went up to the window of her room and from there, she saw Romeo in the garden. They talked about their love.
Romeo asked Juliet to marry him the next day. They decided that nobody must know about our marriage and about our love. In the early morning Romeo went to see Friar Lawrence, an old man, who could marry them. He was a friend of both families The Montegues and The Capulets. The priest thought that a marriage between Romeo and Juliet, could put an end to the old quarrel, so he decided to marry them. The next day Romeo and Juliet came to Friar Lawrance, and he married them. Juliet went home to wait for her young husband, Romeo, who promised to come at night into our garden. Romeo went into the town with Mercutio In one of the streets we saw Tybalt with a group of Capulets. Tybalt attacked them and killed Mercutio. Romeo began to fight with Tybalt. and Rome killed him too. The Prince of Verona decided that Romeo must get a punishment. Romeo had to leave Verona. This was a terrible thing for Romeo and Juliet. Some days later Juliet’s father called her and said, that she had to marry another man, whose name was Paris. She was afraid to tell her father about her is married to Romeo. And she had to go to Friar Lawrance for help.
The priest listened to her, gave her a bottle of medicine. She had to drink this medicine and fall asleep for forty-two hours. She came home and drank the medicine. When Juliet’s mother came into the room she thought, that Juliet was dead. So Juliet was put into a family tomb. When Romeo heard about Juliet’s death, he became very unhappy. I bought poison and went back to Verona.
He came to the Capulet’s tomb and looked at his sweetheart, then he kissed her and drank his poison. He fell down at Juliet’s feet. As soon as Juliet woke up she saw that Romeo is dead. She took a knife and killed herself. They were so young and loving. They couldn’t live without each other. Keep your love!

What’s Montague? It is nor hand, nor foot,

It is pleasant to think that The Tempest, probably the last play that Shakespeare wrote, ends with a scene in which those who have been wronged forgive those who have wronged them. Even in the final scene of his final play, the great poet, wished good will to all.
Thank you for your attention, please remember the magic words ”All’s well that ends well”. Our party is coming to an end. I do hope you enjoyed it. Thank you so much for your attention and participation. Enjoy reading Shakespeare!
Thank you! That was marvelous! I want to present you these… for your acting! I wonder, what will be next?

King Lear: My dear daughters, I’m very old and tired. I can’t be the King of Britain any more. I want to divide the country into three parts and give one part to each of you. And you’ll be the queens of your parts. But first you must tell me how much you love me. Then I will know which of you must get the better part.
Goneril: Dear father, I love you very much. I love you more than my beauty, more than my life. No child loves his father more than I do.
Regan: If only you knew what you mean for me. You are the dearest man in my life. I can’t imagine myself without you.
King Lear: I’m very glad to hear that. And what would you like to tell me, Cordelia?
Cordelia: I don’t understand why my sisters say they love you more than anything else. They are married. Don’t they love their husbands? You are my father, and of course, I love you. But when I marry I’ll love my husband, too.
King Lear: Oh, it’s not the right thing you’ve told me! I’m disappointed. I don’t want to have such a daughter! You’ll get nothing! Go away!
Hamlet's monologue
To be or not to be? That is the question –
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And, by opposing, end them? To die, to sleep –
No more – and by a sleep to say we end
The heartache and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to – 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wished! To die, to sleep.
To sleep, perchance to dream – ay, there's the rub,
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause. There's the respect
That makes calamity of so long life.
The question is: is it better to be alive or dead?

The Merchant of Venice”
Shylock – a rich and successful moneylender
Antonio – a rich merchant, a good man
Bassanio – the romantic hero of the story
Shylock: So, you want to borrow three thousand ducats!
Bassanio: That’s right, and we want it for three months. My friend Antonio will help me to pay it back.
S: But why does Antonio not give you the money now?
Antonio: All my money depends on my ships at sea. I will have money as soon as they return.
S: But that means your money is not safe. Storms might destroy your ships, or they might sink. They might be attacked by pirates who will steal everything.
B: Don’t worry. You can trust my friend. Will you come and eat with us tonight? That way you can get to know him better.
S: I already know Antonio. I will do business with him, but I will not eat with him.
A: So, Shylock, can you lend us what we want? I do not usually lend or borrow with interest. But this time is different. I will borrow for my friend Bassanio.
S: Yes, you want to borrow from me now. You are even willing to pay interest, is that right?
A: Yes, I will pay you interest if you want.
S: No, I don’t want interest from you. But let us agree to a little joke; if you do not repay me what you owe, I can take a pound of your flesh from whatever part of your body that I want.
A: Why, yes, of course, I will agree to that.
B: No, Antonio, don’t do that for me.
A: Don’t worry, my dear friend Bassanio. My ships will return very, very soon. Let Shylock have his little joke.
S: So, Antonio, will you sign this agreement? I will lend Bassanio three thousand ducats. You will pay me back within three months. If you cannot pay me back the money, I can take a pound of flesh from you.
A: I will gladly sign it, for my friend.

Ah do not, when my heart has scaped this sorrow,
Come in the rearward of a conquered woe;
Give not a windy night a rainy morrow,
To linger out a purposed overthrow.
If thou wilt leave me, do not leave me last,
When other petty griefs have done their spite,
But in the onset come; so shall I taste
At first the very worst of Fortune's might;
And other strains of woe, which now seem woe,
Compared with loss of thee, will not seem so.

It is the sun and Juliet is the sun.
It is my lady, it is my love.
O Romeo! Why are you Romeo?
Deny your father and refuse your name.
Shall I hear more, or shall I speak at this?
Джульетта. Only your name is my enemy;
What’s Montague? It is nor hand, nor foot,
Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part
Belonging to a man. Oh, be some other name.
I take you at your word.
Call me your love, and I never will be Romeo.
Juliet: How did you come here, and why? The orchard walls are high and hard to climb
Romeo: I flew over these walls with love’s wings. Nobody can stop me.
Juliet: who told you how to find this place?
Romeo: Love did. If you were as far as that vast shore washed by the furthest sea, I would risk the journey for such a prize.
Do you love me? I know you’ll say yes and I will believe you - я поверю тебе
Romeo: Lady, I swear by the blessed moon. –

In England and other countries it is the highest honour for an actor to be invited to play in a comedy or a tragedy by Shakespeare. In the last 35 years all the plays by W. Shakespeare have been filmed. Since 1879 Shakespeare's Festival has been held every year at Stratford-upon-Avon. Almost all his literary works have been translated into more than 30 languages.
The Shakespeare Birthday Celebrations
From origins in the eighteenth century Stratford-upon-Avon's Shakespeare birthday celebrations have developed into a unique international occasion which annually brings together people from many countries, institutions and professions to do honour to the immortal memory of William Shakespeare.
The annual Shakespeare Birthday Celebrations are held at the closest weekend to his birthday,
Among the activities taking place annually are a procession through the town, a luncheon, special birthday lecture, a theatre performance dedicated to the occasion and the Shakespeare Marathon.
Friday marks the start
The celebrations begins on Friday with the birthday lecture at the Shakespeare Institute. The celebrations continued with a special cocktail party and reception for special guests, hosted by mayor Vince Seaman, and a concert, given by the Orchestra of the Swan.
When Saturday comes
On Saturday, 27 April hundreds of people, special guests from all over the UK and the world, gather for the procession in New Place Gardens
The traditional route takes the procession from New Place, through the town
They visit Shakespeare's Birthplace. Then they travel down to Holy Trinity Church, where the Bard was buried to place the traditional flowers on his grave.
Members of the public who wish to pay the tribute by laying flowers join the procession
After that it is time for the Shakespeare Birthday Luncheon, a fantastic affair where hundreds of specially invited guests gather for lunch and speeches in honour of the Bard.
The luncheon is the annual presentation of the Pragnell Award, which is presented to those who have made an "outstanding achievement in extending the appreciation and enjoyment of Shakespeare's works."

We are especially interested in the best-remembered lines from his tragedies and comedies which frequenly occur in our everyday speech.
