Introduction.

With the rising popularity of phone apps and video games, it’s nice to see school-age children become obsessed with something that doesn’t have a screen.

The currency of our work is caused by the fact that fidget spinners are the latest craze among kids, and even adults can’t help trying to spin this amazing toy.

The main goal of our work is to consider positive and negative aspects of fidget spinners.

To reach the goal we were:

to find out the history of this toy,
to find out the ways to play with it,
to find out the student’s attitude to this gadget,
to analyze its advantages and disadvantages.

Such methods of researching as analysis, comparison and opinion poll were used.

History of the fidget spinner

Fidget spinner or hand spinners or fidget toys are perfect t toys to keep your hands busy or to just play with. It feels nice in the hands and it is silent so you won't be bothering anybody. Have you ever wondered when and where were they invented?

The fidget spinner is the latest toy in the world, but it is more than twenty years old. The fidget spinner was originally invented by Catherine Hettinger in 1990’s. She decided to create a soothing toy for her daughter. The result was a small plastic toy that could sit and spin on the finger. Later Catherine decided to file for a patent on the spinner. The patent on her toy expired but she still continued to sell the spinners online and at craft fairs. Since then different people have produced their versions of spinners. These spinners are a bit different from Catherine Hettinger’s. Hers looked a bit like a hat and would spin and balance on top of the finger; the current ones have two or three blades and have ball bearings in the center which help them spin for a longer time.

There are different types of spinners: dual bar fidget spinner, tri-bar fidget spinner, quad bar fidget spinner and exotic. The mainly used materials are titanium, ceramics, aluminum, brass, cooper, stainless steel, plastic and even wood. (Suplement 1.)

These new fidget-toys have really hit the market and everyone is crazy about them. There are very creative shapes and sizes to attract people. Although the original inventor of these spinners is Catherine Hettinger, she’s not making money from them.

What do people do with them?

The real fun comes from trying to pull off various tricks and stunts with a spinner . As it spins it can be balanced on top of fingers, toes, and if you’re really brave, your nose or forehead. If you have more than one you can stack them on top of one another, and create a spinning tower that plays with your eyes. Perhaps the biggest challenge is throwing a spinner to your friend and trying to catch it. (Suplement 2).

The good about spinners

Fidget spinners were created with good intention. These spinners have a positive day-to-day effect and people even carry them to work or school. Spinners distract children from their smartphones. Moreover, fidget spinners improve concentration, help to fight panic attacks and bad habits like nail biting and even some phobias. What’s more, they are a huge relief for the people who are suffering from ADHD and Autism. They can also initiate some conversations between people. If a stranger doesn’t know what you are playing with, he might get interested and start talking to you.

The bad about spinners

Children are very attracted to this non-electric toys, in fact, they are carrying them to school. This is makes a lot of disorder in the classroom and the pupils get distracted from study as they are actually hynoptised by its spinning effect. Some schools in the USA have started banning these gadgets. What’s more any moving object can cause injuries: it can fall apart and the small pieces can create a choking hazard or may injure a child while spinning. There are certain numbers of incidents when a child swallowed pieces of the toy. Besides, toys of poor quality may cause allergic reactions and even asthma attack. (Suplement 3).

The survey among the pupils.

We conducted an opinion poll among the pupils of 7-11 forms in our lyceum. 75 schoolchildren took part in it. The results of the poll show the attitude to fidget spinners. Let’s see what we have found out.

First of all, we asked if our schoolchildren have ever spinned this toy. 69 answered positively, while only 6 managed to avoid this toy.

29 students can play some tricks, 46 can’t do it.

Also, we asked if this toy is useful or harmful. 47 pupils don’t see any use in spinning. 18 teenagers think they are useful, as they entertain, calm you down, relieve stress, help to concentrate and develop fine monitor skills.

However, 34 respondents consider this toy harmful. 27 are sure it can injure a child and 7 believe it can cause addiction.

Conclusion.

O/ur research proved that a fidget spinner is a great toy to relieve stress and calm down. But as any other toy it should be used carefully. There are some certain rules that should be followed if you want to enjoy a toy and not to get injured.

Spinners should be used by small children only under strict supervision of a parent.
Ceramic spinners should not be dropped or thrown because of the materials tendency to splinter.
Fidget spinners should not be thrown towards the face or eyes of another child while playing.
Certain activities such as riding a bicycle or driving should not be done while using a spinner. Doing this could easily result in an accident when your full attention is not on the road where it should be.
Always buy quality fidget spinners
Often inspect them for loose parts.
