Tomorrow is Saint Valentine’s Day
All in the morning betime,
And I a maid at your window
To be your Valentine.
William Shakespeare
from “Hamlet”, Act IV, Scene V
Dear boys and girls, now you’ll see a game “Saint Valentine’s Day”. Two teams will take part in the game of the most quick-witted and the cleverest.
Here’s a special valentine
With lots of love for you
And since you’re very special
Here are hugs and kisses, too!
Dear friends! Today we are having a Saint Valentine`s Day Party. We are going to celebrate this wonderful holiday, to learn about its history, to listen to some beautiful songs and poems and to take part in different competitions dedicated to Saint Valentine`s Day. Moreover, we have a unique opportunity to talk about love.
And now, ladies and gentlemen, make yourselves comfortable and enjoy our party. By the way, do you know the origin of St. Valentine’s Day?
Valentine’s Day is one of the most favorite holidays in the UK and the USA. They celebrate this holiday on February 14. It is a day of love and friendship. People send greeting cards to their sweethearts and friends and ask them to “Be MY Valentine”.
4 This means “be my friend or love”. People also decorate their homes with big red hearts and give red roses and chocolate to their sweethearts, friends and family.
5 This holiday is popular in our country too. And now we have merry St. Valentine’s party and competition between two teams. Happy Valentine’s Day!
6 What kind of holiday is St. Valentine’s Day? What is his origin?
No one really knows the actual origin of Valentine's Day. Many historians consider this was held on February 14 to honor Faunus, the god of animal life, hunting, herding, the patron of husbandry, and the guardian of the secret lore of nature. After Christianity spread, some think this pagan festival eventually became Valentine's Day.
Other experts connect Valentine's Day with two saints of the early Christian church. According to one story, St. Valentine's was a priest who would marry young couples against the orders of the Roman Emperor Claudius 11, who believed that single young men made better soldiers. This story goes back to about A.D. 200.
There also was another St. Valentine who was a good friend to children. Because he would not worship the gods decreed by the Roman emperor, he was put in prison. While he was imprisoned, the children that he had befriended missed him and brought him loving notes. Many of the notes expressed the thought that "absence makes the heart grow fonder." He was supposedly executed on February 14 in A.D. 270. Some people think this is why we exchange friendly and caring messages on this day.
Many old-fashioned Valentine's Day customs involved ways single women could learn their future husbands might be. In England in the 1700s, women wrote men's names on scraps of paper, rolled each in a ball of clay, and dropped them into water. The first paper that surfaced supposedly had the name of the woman's true love.
Some people connect the celebrating of Valentine's Day with an old English belief that birds choose their mates on February. This, too, possible, since spring was less than a month away. The calendar used before 1582 was slightly different from the one we use now. Spring arrived on March 11 on the old calendar.
Your poems were wonderful! Now, let’ s proceed to the next task. There are English proverbs. You should find the Russian equivalents to the English sayings.

One of the legends says that Valentine was a Christian priest who lived in the 3.centure A.D.
He was put into prison by roman authorities for his teaching and was beheaded on February 14.
According to the legend he performed a miracle-he cured his jailer s daughter of her blindness. Before the execution he wrote her a letter signed “From your Valentine”.
According to another legend, Valentine was an Italian bishop who lived at about the same time.
Hе was thrown into prison because he secretly married couples, contrary to the laws of the Roman empire. The legend says that he was burned at the stake.
Another legend says that the same Valentine wrote to children and friends who loved him from the jail.
February 14 was also a Roman holiday. On this day the young men randomly chose the name of the girl to escort to the festival. The custom of choosing a sweetheart on this day became very popular in the medieval Europe.

Now, St. Valentine’s Day is the day of the sweethearts. On this day, people show their friends, relatives and loved ones that they care.

Most people send “valentines”, greeting cards named after St.Valentine’s letters written from jail.

Red tulips are a decoration of love. Yellow tulips mean “My love seems hopeless”.
25 Since earliest times, roses have been prized as the most beautiful of flowers. The rose was sacred to Venus, the ancient goddess of love. On Valentine’s Day, one rose or a dozen means “I love you”.
The violet has a special Valentine’s Day meaning. The legend has it that violets grew outside the window of the jail where Saint Valentine was imprisoned.

It is interesting to know for all of us how other countries celebrate this holiday. Let’s listen to our couples.
How do people celebrate this holiday in Finland?
It was very interesting. Thank you for the information! Now we would like to know about England! You are welcome!
Single women could learn their future husbands. In England women wrote men's names on scraps of paper, rolled each in a ball of clay, and dropped them into water. The first paper that surfaced supposedly had the name of the woman's true love.
Oh, it was great! Let’s listen about France!
I didn’t know about it! Thank you for your information!
Elvira, I’d like to hear about the celebration of this holiday in Japan!
Then, let’s invite our couples!
What about Sweden?
Thanks for all of you for such wonderful stories!

Today you have an excellent chance to plunge into the atmosphere of love, to take part in party-games, to practice the use of some pleasant words and expressions on this special occasion. Happy St. Valentine’s Day!
St. Valentine’s Day is a religious holiday, which is celebrated in Great Britain, in many countries of the world. It has roots in several legends.
One of the early symbols of love is Cupid, the Roman God of Love, who is represented as a young boy with a bow and arrows.
THE LEGEND ABOUT ST. VALENTINE
“This is the legend of how St. Valentine’s Day began. When the Roman Emperor Claudius 2 needed soldiers, he made a law against marrying because he felt that marriage made men want to stay at home instead of fighting wars. But at that time there was a kindly priest named Valentine. He couldn’t agree with the emperor’s decision. When he saw that young couples were truly in love, he married them secretly”.
St. Valentine's was a priest who would marry young couples against the orders of the Roman Emperor Claudius 11, who believed that single young men made better soldiers.
St. Valentine was a good friend to children. Because he would not worship the gods decreed by the Roman emperor, he was put in prison. The children missed him and brought him loving notes. Many notes expressed the thought that "absence makes the heart grow fonder." This is why we exchange friendly and caring messages on this day.
Some people connect the celebrating of Valentine's Day with an old English belief that birds choose their mates on February.
Commercial valentines were first made in the early 1800s. Kate Greenaway, a British artist, was one of the makers of valentines. Her valentines are known for her drawing of little children and the varied shades of blues and greens.

But now let's have a fun and play.
Roman emperor Claudius did not want young men to get married. He wanted all men to go to war instead. He said no one could get married without his permission.
Student: But young men and women who were in love wanted to get married. They went to Valentine and he married them in secret. When Claudius found out, he put Valentine into prison. Claudius killed Valentine on February, 14.
Student: Two hundred years (ago) later, the church made February 14 a special day to remember saint Valentine. Valentine became the patron saint of lovers.
