Preface
Singing is a popular activity throughout the world and students like learning English songs. Teaching an English song has the following benefits: as you sing or play a recording of an English song, the students are apt to listen attentively, thereby improving their aural comprehension. The vocabulary, sentiments, and cultural background of the song can serve as discussion material. Singing allows the students a chance to relax from the pressure of conversation and the material of the lesson. Group spirit is fostered through singing. The students can carry the song beyond classroom doors and sing for family and friends. This, in turn tends to reinforce the students’ interest in learning English. Singing is suitable for small and large groups alike for small children and teenagers.
The kinds of songs that I choose to teach depend entirely on the age and interests of my students.
A very colorful and pictorial album of kids’ songs written by Nancy Cassidy from California and other songs are widely used at my classes of English teaching grammar, vocabulary and other aspects of the language.
To make the most of any song you choose? The following procedures will be helpful:
1. Prepare a copy of the lyrics for each student. If you have no duplicating facilities available, you can write the words to a song on the blackboard and have students copy them. This, of course, takes up valuable time, but it is important that the students have the words.
2. Read each line in the song with the class following in choral repetition. Correct any problems in pronunciation that occur.
3. Explain the meaning of new words and point out cases of elision and linking. Then have the class say each line again in choral repetition.
4. Have the students listened to the melody two or three times before they sing it.
5. Correct problems in pronunciation or phrasing that may have occured during singing.
6. Have the students practice the song several times so that they learn it well. Do not permit them to sing the song too slowly.
7. Once the song is learned, I make it a departure point for conversation. Ask questions with vocabulary items from the song or have students use the vocabulary in original sentences. If it is a folk song talk about its historical backgrounds, its particular meaning in its cultural context.
8. Review the song from time to time. Students enjoy singing songs they have previously learned – it gives them a sense of mastery, and enthusiasm for learning other songs.
All the songs in this manual are authentic materials, and it is significant since it increases students' motivation for learning, makes the learner be exposed to the 'real' language. They provide a positive effect on learner motivation, provide authentic cultural information, exposure to real language, relate more closely to learners needs, and support more creative approach to teaching. We can claim that learners are being exposed to real language and they feel that they are learning the “real” language.

Sandwiches
Sandwiches are beautiful, sandwiches are fine,
I like sandwiches
I eat them all the time.
I eat them for my supper and I eat them for my lunch.
If I had a hundred sandwiches, I eat them all at once.
I’m a-roaming and a-traveling and a-wandering all along,
And if you care to listen, I will sing a happy song.
I will not ask a favor and I will not ask a fee,
But if you have a sandwich, won’t you give a bite to me?
Sandwiches are beautiful, sandwiches are fine,
I like sandwiches
I eat them all the time.
I eat them for my supper and I eat them for my lunch.
If I had a hundred sandwiches, I eat them all at once.
Once I went to England, I visited the Queen,
I swear she was the grandest lady that I’d ever seen.
I told her she was beautiful and could not ask for more,
She handed me a sandwich and threw me out the door.
Sandwiches are beautiful, sandwiches are fine,
I like sandwiches
I eat them all the time.
I eat them for my supper and I eat them for my lunch.
If I had a hundred sandwiches, I eat them all at once.
A sandwich may be egg or cheese or even peanut butter,
But all they taste so good to me, it doesn’t even matter.
Jam or ham or cucumber, any kind will do.
Well, I like sandwiches, how about you?

A whole new world
I can show you the world
Shining, shimmering, splendid
Tell me, princess, now when did
You last let your heart decide?
I can open your eyes
Take you wonder by wonder
Over, sideways and under
On a magic carpet ride
A whole new world
A new fantastic point of view
No one to tell us no
Or where to go
Or say we're only dreaming
A whole new world
A dazzling place I never knew
But when I'm way up here
It's crystal clear
That now I'm in a whole new world with you
Now I'm in a whole new world with you
Unbelievable sights
Indescribable feeling
Soaring, tumbling, freewheeling
Through an endless diamond sky
A whole new world
Don't you dare close your eyes
A hundred thousand things to see
Hold your breath - it gets better
I'm like a shooting star
I've come so far
I can't go back to where I used to be
A whole new world
Every turn a surprise
With new horizons to pursue
Every moment red-letter
I'll chase them anywhere
There's time to spare
Let me share this whole new world with you

Breakfast
Hold the Milk, Put back the sugar
They are powerless to console
We've gathered here to sprinkle ashes
from our late friends cereal bowl.
Breakfast clubbers say the motto
that he taught us to repeat
"You will lose it in your gym class if you wait till noon to eat"
Back when the chess club said our eggs were soft
Every Monday he'd say grace and hold our juice aloft
Oh none of us knew his check out time would come so soon
but before his brain stopped waving he composed this tune
Chorus:
When the toast is burned
And all the milk has turned
And Captain Crunch is waving farewell
When the big one finds you
May this song remind you
That they don't serve breakfast in hell
Breakfast clubbers drop the hankies
Though to some our friend was odd
That day he bought those pine pajamas
His check was good with god
Those here without the Lord
How do you cope
For this morning we don't mourn
Like those who have no hope
Oh rise up Friut Loop lovers
Sing out sweet and low
With spoons held high
We bid our brother "Cheerio"!!!
16
Breakfast – Vocabulary and Exercises
Adjectives:
powerless, late (dead), check out (departure), burned, pine,
Verbs:
Hold (to not include), put back, console, sprinkle, teach, repeat, lose, wait, say grace (say a prayer before a meal), hold, stop, wave, compose, turn, find, remind, serve, drop, buy, cope, mourn, rise up, bid “Cheerio” (to say “goodbye”)
Nouns:
Ashes, bowl, motto, chess club, brain, toast, hell, clubbers, hanky (handkerchief), Fruit Loop (type of cereal in America), spoon
Adverbs:
aloft, soon, high
Choose the correct form of the verb:
- Can you please ____________ (hold) the sugar please? I don’t want any.
- Yesterday, we ____________ (wave) the flag at the school presentation.
- I will ____________ (compose) a song on my guitar.
- They have ____________ (remind) you about the test, correct?

- She is ____________ (sprinkle) sugar on the sweet rolls.
- We haven’t ____________ (buy) a new car yet.
- She works in a restaurant and ____________ (serve) the meals.
Discuss:
- The friend used to say, “"You will lose it in your gym class if you wait till noon to eat.” This means “You will get sick if you don’t eat breakfast.” He is trying to say that you should not live without something important to sustain you. Maybe that’s a job, a family, or some goal. What is your “breakfast” – what keeps you going in life?
- What do you think this means: “they don’t serve breakfast in hell?” Is hell supposed to be comfortable?
- We assume that the friend has eaten his breakfast. Why? Are the friends mourning his death?
- What is “the big one” that will find you? Are you afraid of “the big one?”
Note:
This song is fun and easy if you just look at the words, without the meaning. If you use the meaning, it can be a fun song for older forms to use.
“Cheerio” means goodbye, but it’s also the name of a cereal in America. So it’s funny because it has two meanings.
Captain Crunch is also the name of a cereal. Here, Captain Crunch is personified, or given qualities of a person. It’s another joke that he is waving.

Nora Jones
Don’t know why
I waited till I saw the sun
I don’t know why I didn’t call
I left you by the house of fun
I don’t know why I didn’t call
I don’t know why I didn’t call
When I saw the break of day
I wished that I could fly away
Instead of kneeling in the sand
Catching tear drops in my hand
My heart is drenched in wine
But you’ll be on my mind forever
Out across the endless sea
I would die in ecstasy
But of the vagabonds
Driving down the road alone
My heart is drenched in wine
But you’ll be on my mind forever
Something has to make you run
I don’t know why I didn’t call
I feel as empty as a drum
I don’t know why I didn’t call
I don’t know why I didn’t call
I don’t know why I didn’t call

Frosty the Snowman
Bing Crosby
Frosty the Snowman was a jolly happy soul
With a corncob pipe and a button nose and eyes made out of coal
Frosty the Snowman was a fairytale they say
He was made of snow but the children know that he came to life one day
There must have been some magic in that old silk hat they found
For when they placed it on his head he began to dance around
Frosty the Snowman was as live as he could be
And the children say he could laugh and play just the same as you and me
Frosty the Snowman knew the sun was hot that day
So he said lets run and we’ll have some fun now before I melt away
Down to the village with a broomstick in his hand
Running here and there all around the square saying catch me if you can
He led them down the streets of town right to the traffic cop

Hakuna Matata
Hakuna Matata, what a wonderful phrase
Hakuna Matata, ain’t no passin’ craze
It means no worries, for the rest of your days
It’s our problem free, philosophy
Hakuna Matata
Hakuna Matata?
Yeah, it’s our motto
What’s a motto?
Nothing, what’s the matta with you?
Those two words will solve all your problems
Yeah, take Pumba here for example
When he was a young warthog
When I was a young warthog
He found his aroma like a certain appeal
He could clear the savannah after every meal
I’m a sensitive soul
Though I seem thick skinned
And it hurt, that my friends never stood downwind
And oh the shame
He was a shame
Thought of changing my name
Oh what’s in a name
And I got downhearted
How did you feel
Every time that I … Pumba, not in front of the kids
Oh, sorry
Hakuna Matata what a wonderful phrase,
Hakuna Matata, ain’t no passin craze
It means no worries, for the rest of your days
It’s our problem free, philosophy…

Lemon tree
When I was just a lad of ten
My father said to me:
“Come here and take a lesson
From the lovely lemon tree.
Don’t put your faith in love, my boy”
My father said to me.
“I fear you’ll find that love is like the lovely lemon tree”.
Refrain: Lemon tree is very pretty
And the lemon flower is sweet
But the fruit of the poor lemon
Is impossible to eat ( 2 times)
One day beneath the lemon tree
My love and I did lie.
A girl’s so sweet that when she smiled
The stars rose in the sky.
We passed that summer lost in love
Beneath the lemon tree.
The music of her laughter hid
My father’s words from me.
Refrain: Lemon tree is very pretty
And the lemon flower is sweet
But the fruit of the poor lemon
Is impossible to eat ( 2 times)
One day she left without a word-
She took away the sun.
And in the dark she’d left behind
I knew what she had done.
She’d left me for another –

Teacher’s isolation words from the first stanza
Winter deep
Street dark
Freshly December
Silent snow
Teacher’s demonstration on the first stanza
It was a cold winter night in December. I went out to the dark, silent street after I had a bad quarrel with my father. The snow never stopped. I was lost in deep thought. The memory of my childhood came back freshly to my mind. Although my father was very poor, he always tried his best to make me happy. I was really an ungrateful child. It was better for me to come back to him and ask for forgiveness.
