Republic of Tuva

        Tuva Republic (also spelled Tyva) is a federal subject of Russia. Tyva is situated in the center of Asia in the south of Eastern Siberia. The republic borders with the Altai Republic, the Republic of Khakassia, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk Oblast, and the Republic of Buryatia in Russia and with Mongolia to the south. Capital town of the region is Kyzyl.

Naadym

        Naadym is one of the most interesting and important holiday. It is a festival of cattle breeders which is usually held in the middle of August. Naadym has been celebrated in Tyva since 1922, from the moment of Tuva Republic foundation. The essential parts of the festival Naadym are horse racing and Khuresh.

Throat singing

        The Republic of Tuva is a giant when it comes to mastery of the human voice. Tuvan throat singers can produce two or three, sometimes even four pitches simultaneously. The effect has been compared to that of a bagpipe. The singer starts with a low drone. Then, by subtle manipulations of his vocal tract and keen listening, he breaks up the sound, amplifying one or more overtones enough so that they can be heard as additional pitches while the drone continues at a lower volume. Despite what the term might suggest throat singing does not strain the singer’s throat.

        The Tuvan way of making music is based on appreciation of complex sounds with multiple layers or textures. To the Tuvan ear, a perfectly pure tone is not as interesting as a sound which contains hums, buzzes, or extra pitches that coexist with the main note being sung. Tuvan instruments are designed and played to produce such multi-textured sounds as well.

Khuresh

        Khuresh is a traditional form of wrestling in the ethnically in southern Siberia. Attend a Tuvan wrestling match, Khuresh, in which one loses by touching the ground with hand, knee, or any other part of body besides the feet. The victor does the “eagle dance” around the flags of the Republic of Tuva and Russian Federation.

Religion: Shamanism

        Shamanism is an ancient healing tradition and a way of life. The teaching of shamanism focuses on our connection to nature and promotes the well-being of all creation.

Essential aspects of shamanism life include journeying, ceremony, sacred dance and pilgrimages to places of power in nature. Through these techniques the shamanic circle embraces us, unifying our lives with strength, healing and love.

Religion: Buddhism

        Three religions are widespread among the people of Tuva: Tibetan Buddhism, Christianity and shamanism.

        In general, Buddhism is a way of finding peace within oneself. It is religion that helps people to find the happiness and contentment they seek.

         Buddhists develop inner peace, kindness and wisdom through their daily practice; and then share their experience with others bringing real benefit to this world. They try not to harm others and to live peacefully and gently, working towards the ultimate goal of pure and lasting happiness for all living beings.

Sogazha is favourite meal of Tuvans. Fine part of liver is fried on coals, after that cut and wrapped into a thin gasket, stringed on skewers, salted and roasted to a turn. It should be eaten only hot, so look out when you are offered this meal.

Religion: Christianity

Three religions are widespread among the people of Tuva: Tibetan Buddhism, Christianity and Shamanism.

        Christianity is based on the life and teaching of Jesus Christ approximately 2,000 years ago. Nowadays Christianity is one of the most influential religions.

        Christians believe that there is only one God, whom they call Father as Jesus Christ taught them. They recognize Jesus as the son of God who was sent to save mankind from death and sin. Christians believe God functions as a Trinity.

Tuvan meals: Bozha

        Saving Tuvans put everything to use. The liquid curds left after sublimation is poured together into a linen packet, cooled, filtered and dried – comes in another type of dried cottage cheese “ol aarzhy”. Apart from Bozha, at the walls of distiller forms curdled sediment which is scraped off with spoon and eaten.

        Aarzhy – clabber cottage cheese. Clabber is day by day collected to wooden dishes, and after that boiled for a long time, cooled, the whey drawn off and left for a day under a board with weight. Ready aarzhy is crumbled and dried. It is usually eaten with tea. In summer dry aarzhy is used as a component for cooking different meals.

Byshtakh is pressed cheese from whole milk. It is cooked from boiled milk adding clabber. A packet with a “blank” is put between two boards which forms the cheese properly. The cheese can be cooked during one day. Byshtakh is a very taste food.

Tuvan meals: Dalgan

        A very traditional food “dalgan” can be hard to find nowadays unless you fall in love with a rural Tuvan grandmother. It is like Tibetan “tsampa”, rolled oats toasted to taste on hot sand in a pot over the fire, sieved to separate, and pounded to a coarse meal. This is then formed into a ball using salt tea or kumiss as the binder.  Pretty steamed mutton dumplings, “booza”, also fried as “khoorshur”.

Tuvan meals: Khurut

Khurut is a cottage cheese is cut into cubes and dried, like mushrooms, on a string hanged on the yurt frame. The cottage cheese hardens fast. It is taken to long trips or, for example, to a pasture. It is hard to eat for want of habit, but it is worth trying. Khurut can be also taken as a souvenir – it carries its appearance for many months. There are cases when foreigners took khurut back home and kept it for many years among their most dear souvenirs.

Khan is a meal from sheep blood. It is made in the process of carcass dressing: fresh sheep blood is mixed with salt and onions, poured into washed bowels and boiled in a big pot, adding salt and flavored grasses. It is cut and eaten at once when it is still hot.

Tuvan meals: Tea with milk and salt

        Tea with milk and salt is a favourite drink of Tuvans. The tea has to be green. It is boiled in a cast-iron pot adding salt, and when it is boiled, fresh milk is added and finished cooking together with tea. Tea is served not only with cow milk, but also with sheep, goat and camel milk. After the mode, the hostess pours tea first to the host, then to herself. Guests are served with a half-full cup held with both hands.
