W. Shakespeare.
The Taming of the Shrew
Baptista – a rich gentleman, а father of Katherina and Bianka
Gentleman – a rich man, a friend of Baptista
Katherina – an older daughter of the noble man Baptista
Bianka - the youngest daughter the noble man Baptista
Scene 1 ( living room in the Baptista’s house )
Bianka: You are the most egoistic person, I know. Dad doesn’t allow me to get married. I’m so unhappy. I never get married because of you. Nobody wants to be your husband. Your tongue is too scold. Men are afraid of you.
Katherina: Marrige is a worth thing in the world. Imagine, you would serve your husband and he lies on a sofa and commands: ”Do this, do that”, makes foolish tricks and you must laugh and pretend you love him. Stop whining, try to do something useful. Don’t be like a hen.
Bianka: You are angry, egoistic and scolding. I and my bridegroom, we are so unhappy because of you.
Katherina: Go, go away… Why do people want to get married? It’s so boring and
silly to follow orders of the man, love him. What does it mean love? Love, love!!! It’s a fairy tale for young girls. I’ll never fall in love. Men are too self- confident, think that women must serve them and they’ll give us their love only when they want. Nobody thinks about our fillings.
Never, never, never….
Baptista: My younger daughter Bianca….! She is so beautiful and gentle. A lot of suitors wish to marry her. And my father’s heart will me to think about my older daughter Katherina.
Gentleman : Oh..! Her beauty is known, but her temper…, her tongue is too sharp. Who
will agree to have so wild “cat” as a wife?
Baptista: I’m afraid, Katherina would never find a husband. I’ll never allow Bianca to marry until her sister Katherina get married.
Gentleman : Let’s think. We should find a husband for her by ourselves. … And may be
I know a suitable gentleman. As I heard a rich gentleman called Petruchio
came from Verona to Padua. His father dead not so long and left him
plenty money. Petruchio now wish to see something in the world and find
a wife. He has the best of tempers and is a favourite with his friends.
Baptista: May be we are lucky and he could get married Katherina.
Gentleman : I’ll try to speak with him and visit you soon. Oh ! I think, Katherina
would be a good wife for him.
Baptista: Oh ! It would be great !
Scene 2 ( in the Baptista’s house )
Baptista
Gentleman
Petruchio - a gentleman from Verona
Music master – Katherina’s music teacher
Katherina
Baptista: Oh, my dear friend ! I’m glad to see you and who is that gentleman with you?
Gentleman : May I introduce you Petruchio, a gentleman from Verona. I told you about him not so long. He would like to meet your older daughter Katherina.
Petruchio: I’m glad to greet you, sir. I’ve heard a lot about the beauty of your daughters Bianca and Katherina . But the most of all I’ve heard about gentles of Katherina, so I’ve come to ask you your leave to marry her.
Baptista: I fear my daughter won’t suit you.
Petruchio: I see you don’t wish to part with her or don’t want me as a son-in-law.
Baptista: Indeed you are mistaken! I should tell you about her cross ways and scolding tongue.
( the music master is rushing into the room with frighten eyes and blood on his head)
Music master: Oh! Help me, please!
Baptista: What’s wrong ?
Music master: She’ll make a better soldier ! I only corrected her for the way she played and she struck me on the head with her lute. She called me all sorts of rude names, so I was frightened out my life.
Petruchio: (to himself) She is a brave girl! I love her ten times more than ever and want to have a chat with her.
(to Baptista) Sir, I’m hurry to be married and want to see my bride at once.
( noise, something is falling down, Katherina comes into the room, she is angry but proud)
Katherina: Where is that donkey ? He dared tell me I was playing wrong.
Got dammit! Come here! I’ll show you how to play a lute.
Petruchio: (for himself) I ‘ll woo her some spirit. If she scolds, I’ll tell her that she sings as sweetly as a nightingale. If she frowns, I ‘ll say she looks as clear as morning roses newly washed with dew. If she won’t speak a word, I‘ll say how charmingly she talks.
( to Katherina) Good morning, Kate, for that’s your name I heard.
Katherina: They call me Katherina, those that do talk of me.
Petruchio: You lie, for you are called plain Kate, and beautiful Kate, sometimes cross Kate, but Kate you are, the prettiest Kate in the world. Hearing about your beauty and mildness, I have come to merry you.
Katherina: ( is laughting ) Never, never, never ! I wouldn’t be your wife.
God bless me ! Where does this self-confident blockhead come from ?
( to her father ) Well, this way you’ve planed to marry me to that cock.
Baptista: I’m going to leave him to marry you. It is my last word.
Petruchio: Be patient, sir. She talks thus when you are here. When we will be alone, no one can be tender and loving.
Give me your hand, Kate. I’ll go to Venice to buy rings, rich clothes and fine things for our wedding on Sunday. Kiss me, dear Kate, and prepare the marriage feast.

Katherina: Oh, my God! I’m so tired, want to eat and sleep. When we came to the castle , my dear husband didn’t allow me to eat. When servants brought meal, he said that the meal was burned, pudding – badly dressed and fruits weren’t fit to eat, he dropped out the meal. That’s why we had to be hungry. He didn’t allow me to sleep. He said that the bedclothes was so dirty, not white, the pillows were hard. He dropped out the pillows. I have no power, I want to sleep.
Story-teller: Next day Petruchio behaved in the same way, speaking with kindness to
Katherina, yet making everything as uncomfortable for her as he could, but
said gentle.

Petruchio: How bright the moon shines!
Katherina: The moon ? The sun; it is not moon light now.
Petruchio: I say it is the moon that shines so bright!
Katherina: I know it is the sun that shines so bright.
Petruchio: Now, it shall be moon, or star, or what I please before I go to your father's house. Turn the horses and go home again.
Katherina: Let's go forward, I pray, since we come so far, and it shall be moon; or star, or sun, or whatever you please and if you call it a candle, it shall be so for me.
Petruchio: I say, then, it is the moon!
Katherina: I know, it is the moon.
Petruchio: You lie, it is the sun!

(servant goes away, all are laughing and waiting for the answer, then servant came back)
