                     Thanksgiving Day

  • Hello, dear boys and girls! Today the Americans celebrate a family holiday. Can you guess what holiday it is?
  • Thanksgiving Day. Right you are.

People gather to give thanks for all the good things in their lives. They make a big turkey dinner. It is on the fourth Thursday in November. (3 minute video).

  • Look at the blackboard. There you can see the words you need today.

(on the blackboard):

 settles ['setlәz] поселенцы

 to return [ri'tә:n] возвращаться

to put trust in God - довериться богу

 to survive [sә'vәiv] выживать

 harvest ['ha:vist] урожай

  • Now, children, it's your turn to tell all you know about this holiday. (it was their homework).

1p. There is one day a year when all Americans stay home with their families and eat a big dinner. The pilgrims celebrated the first Thanksgiving Day in the fall of 1621. They sailed to America from Plymouth, England, in September, 1620. They came to America for religious freedom.

2p.  They were among the first European settlers in America. The name of their ship was “Mayflower”. They landed at Plymouth Rock, in what is now the state of Massachusetts in December, 1620.

3p.  There were people living in America before the piligrims arrived. These people were the Native American Indians. They hunted, fished and farmed and survived.

4p.  The pilgrims' first winter in the New World was difficult. Without fresh food, half of the pilgrims died. The following spring the Indians taught the pilgrims how to hunt, fish, plant and survive in America. The crops did well, and in the fall of 1621 the pilgrims had a great harvest. They were thankful and decided to celebrate it. They prepared a dinner.

5p.  They prepared a dinner of turkey, corn, beans and pumpkins. They invited their Indian friends. They brought food too (even popcorn!).

6p.  Turkey is still the main food and pumpkin pie is the most popular dessert.

-  It was very nice! Thanks a lot! Now I want you to circle the right answer in every sentence (on the blackboard):

1) The pilgrims landed in (New York, Georgia, Massachusetts) in 1620.

2) They celebrated the first (Christmas, Thanksgiving Day, Valentine's Day).

3) The name of their ship was (the Mayflower, the Plymouth, the Harvest).

4) Some of the passengers and sailors were afraid the ship could not (land, cross, plant) the ocean.

5) The Indians taught the Pilgrims how to (cook, survive, celebrate).

6) In the fall of 1621, the pilgrims had a good (harvest, ship, survival).

7) Today (popcorn, crops, turkey) is still the main dish served on Thanksgiving Day.

-  Now, match the words with the word or phrase that has a similar meaning: (cards)
