Presenting vocabulary is just the first step in helping your learners expand their vocabulary. Learners need to remember the words too, and one way of helping with this is to teach them ways of recording new words. I’m sure, teachers can find it beneficial to look at how learners store and record vocabulary. Being aware of how your learners store their vocabulary can give you an insight into their learning styles, and can also help learners build autonomy.

Presenting vocabulary is just the first step in helping your learners expand their vocabulary. Learners need to remember the words too, and one way of helping with this is to teach them ways of recording new words. I’m sure, teachers can find it beneficial to look at how learners store and record vocabulary. Being aware of how your learners store their vocabulary can give you an insight into their learning styles, and can also help learners build autonomy. Look at the table of words and think about the meaning of each. Ho would you convey the meaning of these words to your students? You can choose any words.

I would like to present you some methods of recording vocabulary. Earlier, I didn’t use them very often, but nowadays I use them every day at my lessons.
Different methods to store vocabulary

It’s very useful to make word cards , they organize that can be useful in helping a learner learn new vocabulary.
For each new word, the learner writes the word, its definition, its part of speech (noun, verb, adjective,
adverb, etc.), a synonym (a word or phrase that means the same), an antonym (a word which means
the opposite), draws a picture that shows the meaning of the word, and writes an example sentence using the word.
Network or cluster diagram
Network or cluster diagrams can help to arrange and organise ideas based upon a central topic. Using
this type of diagram, learners can easily brainstorm a theme, link ideas, or explore a new subject.
Start with a star diagram (major traits/characteristics) and then extend.

Venn Diagrams
A Venn diagram is made up of two or three overlapping circles. I use it very often at my lessons and teens like it very much. They can be used by learners to visualize the relationship between two or three sets.
Venn diagrams can also be used to compare and contrast the characteristics of items.
Clines or scales
Clines or scales can be useful in helping a learner rank or order words.
The scale can be anything from big or small or old and young for factual ordering, to learners using like/dislike or good/bad to give their own opinions.
Summorising all the above, Wordcards – can be used for all vocabulary regardless of the part of speech it is. They allow forlearners to store lots of information about the word and also to provide a personalised example of the word in use by writing a sentence.
Network or cluster diagrams – great when thinking around a topic, to produce and provide
other words related to the new word.
Charts and tables – good for looking at words that are similar but have slight differences.
It can also help with the meaning and form of new vocabulary since knowledge does not automatically mean
learners have the ability to use words.
Venn diagrams – good for low level learners to visually see relationships between words, or
ideas.
Clines or scales – great for relating to language on a personal level. How much you like
something for example or how strong/weak an adjective is or how positive/negative it is, as well as
associating age to words or technology etc. It enables learners to look at language in a different
way. Looking at groups or categories of words and applying a different idea to store or categorise
them, this personalisation can also help when later recalling words.
