Coat of Arms (герб)

Christopher Columbus was made a knight ( ) and given a coat of arms for his voyage in 1492 by King Fernando and Queen Isabel of Spain. The castle (Castile) and the lion (Leon) are Spanish royal symbols. The lion is also a symbol of courage (мужество ) and bravery. The islands in the sea refer (относятся, ссылаются) to Columbus career as an explorer (  ), because he discovered the islands of North America. Columbus was the Admiral of the Sea, that’s why his Coat of arms has five anchors (якоря).

Design your own (собственный) coat of arms)

1. Coats of arms often depict animals. Read what qualities (качества) are usually connected (связаны)  with the following() animals?

Lion –brave

Bee – busy-

Lark –happy

Ox () –strong

Kitten –playful (игривый)

Mouse –quiet

Snail –slow

Mule –stubborn (  )

2. What character types these colours might represent (представлять )?

For example,

White – optimistic

Yellow –cheerful

Orange – energetic

Red –quick-tempered

Blue –creative

Green –honest

Brown –practical

Black –lazy

3.  Decide which adjectives from the list describe youк best. Make these colours and images (образы) of animals part of your design.

Choose a combination of colours and use them to colour (раскрасить) in the sections of your coat of arms.

4. Draw your coat of arms and an animal or animals from the list (список ).
5. Complete your coat of arms with another personal symbol that represents (представляет) you, your interests and hobbies.
6. Add a motto ( ) (a short phrase that goes under the coat of arms) on the sheet (лист) of paper, for example, “Ice-cream lover”, “Football lover” or “ Busy bee”or sentence ( ) about your likes and dislikes, your opinions, for example, “Honest is my policy” or “Chocolate makes life easier”.
7. Design a coat of arms for your family or family members (your mother. Father, sister and so on ( и так далее). Don’t forget to think of mottos (for your coat of arms.).
