T – Look at the chalkboard, here you can see an quotation about Great Britain. Let’s read and translate. This quotation was said by W. Somerset Maugham.
“If you want to eat well in England, eat three breakfasts.”
Tell me please, why did W. Somerset Maugham say in this way about English breakfast?
II. Управление тренировкой в овладении материалом.
1. Работа с текстом.
T – Today we will continue to speak about Great Britain. Open your books at page 165 and find the text. This text is about the tourist authority’s view. Let’s read and translate this text.
“Britain has a rich history. The British Tourist Authority (BTA) has selected almost 600 of our famous historic sites – castles, gardens, monuments, cathedrals, etc.
Colorful royal ceremonies attract millions of visitors each year. We have a wealth of traditional ceremonies and customs which are open to all, from the Changing of the Guard to the annual Oxford v. Cambridge Boat Race.
London has an international reputation for its historic sites, museums and famous institutions. Other cities such as Oxford, Cambridge and Bath are visited by large numbers of tourists every year.
People travel to Scotland, the Lake District and other areas of Britain to enjoy the beautiful scenery.
For those who like music, Britain (and especially London – the world’s classical music capital) offers numerous concerts, ballets, operas, and festival all year round.
International cultural events such as the Edinburgh Festival attract many visitors. Some of the most popular attractions are outside London including the Jorvik Centre, the National Railway Museum in York, the National Museum of Photography in Bradford, the Royal Marine Museum at Portsmouth, “Cadbury World” in Birmingham, and the lovely cathedral city in Norwich.”
2. Достопримечательности Великобритании.
T – What other attractions do you think tourists would be interested in? Try to make a list of Britain’s attractions.
• Customs and traditions
• International cultural events
• Colleges
• Museums and galleries
• Theatre\music
• Historic cities
T – Today we will travel to Great Britain. The first place that we visit is Westminster Abbey. Try to imagine that you are in there. Look at the screen, here you see the view of Westminster Abbey. Try to tell about Westminster Abbey.
P – It is a big hall with a lot of columns. There are a lot of chairs here. In the distance we can notice a portrait of Richard II and the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior. If you turn your head you will see a coronation place. This place is very beautiful decorated. This is a place where queens and kings were crowned. The next hall is Sanctuary and Transepts. Here there are organ, choir stalls and some chapels. The most beautiful in this hall is the Coronation Chair. Stairs with a red carpet lead with to the coronation chair. There are also poet’s corners, for example, Geoffrey Chaucer and William Shakespeare. The last place in Westminster Abbey is Chapel of Henry VII. Here there are a lot of tombs, for example, the Tomb of Elizabeth I and Mary I, the Tomb of Princess Mary, and the Tomb of Henry VII. I can say that I enjoyed this travel.
T – The next place that today we visit is the Houses of Parliament. Try to imagine that you are in there. Look at the screen, here you see the view of the Houses of Parliament.
P – I’ m very glad that I finally see Big Ben. I always want to hear the chime of Big Ben. The Houses of Parliament is a big and ancient building. This building is very beautiful and interesting, because it was built in Gothic style. In our country you can’t see Gothic style. I think that Big Ben is a big clock in the world. I can see the Thames. Some time it was very pure river, but today it has already been so pure. Across this river there are a lot bridges. Around the bridges and river there are a lot of different buildings.
T – And the last place that we visit today is Piccadilly Circus. Look at the screen, here you see the view of Piccadilly Circus. Try to imagine that you are there.
P – Piccadilly Circus is very famous place in London. Here you can visit the shopping centre “Sanyo”. On the road we can see a famous double-decker. At the center of Piccadilly Circus there is a statue of Eros. Eros is the Greek god of love. Around this statue there are street stamps. That’s way you can go for a walk bear Piccadilly Circus at night and see all beauty of this place.
3. Аудирование.
T – And now listen to the announcement you may hear at tourist centers in Britain. Which of these tourist attractions would you be the most interesting in visiting? Why? Which of the 3 views in this section tells you the most about life in Britain?
4. Домашнее задание.
T – Open your record books and write down your homework. At home you should write the main reasons for visiting Britain. And also write down why you would like to visit Britain?
5. Итог урока.
T – Tell me please, what sights in Britain do you know? Thank you for your work. The lesson is over. Goodbye.
