8).Read texts and say why people risk.
Peter:
Personally I don’t understand why they do it. Maybe it’s like a drug, they do it for the first time just because some of their friends said it was great and then ended up being addicted to it. The more they do them the more they want to do it again. Or probably they start doing it because they want to show how strong and courageous they are and then end up liking it and as I’ve said before become addicted. I’d never try anything like that, I’m addicted to safety.
Michael:
I work in a bank and I can’t say it’s a particularly exciting job. You often want a change. You get bored with e-mails, faxes, deadlines, work challenges. I found the perfect escape in skydiving. When I do it all my personal problems go away, and when I get back to real life they don’t seem that bad anymore. And to add up to that skydiving is an ultimate thrill and a real pleasure. I’ve also made a lot of friends who share the same passion. I’d never abandon it. Never.
Some say that people who do risk sports are reacting against a society which they feel has become dull. David Lewis, a psychologist, believes that people today crave adventure. In an attempt to guarantee safety, our culture has eliminated risk. “The world has become a bland and safe place”,says Lewis.” People used to be able to seek adventure by hunting wild animals, or taking part in expeditions. Now they turn to risk sports as an escape”
Risk sports have a positive side as well. They help people to overcome fears that affect them in their real lives. This makes risk sports particularly valuable for executives in office jobs who need to stay alert so that they can cope with things go wrong. They learn that being frightened doesn't mean they can't be in control.
Crave – want very much
Eliminate /ɪˈlɪmɪneɪt/ – to get rid of something that is not wanted or needed
Bland – without excitement
Alert /əˈləːt/ – quick to notice what is happening
9).Завершающий этап урока. Подведение итогов урока. Выставление оценок.

- which sports can be called extreme. Why? Name some;
- what the possible benefits of extreme sports are;
- what the possible dangers are, with examples;
- if you would like to do extreme sports and why;
You will have to talk for 2–2.5 minutes.
A SPORTING DISASTER
I never really enjoyed sports at school. I remember when
I played football. I was always put in goal, but I used to get bored and read a book. Then when the other side scored the rest of my team would shout at me. Later on I tried tennis, which wasn't much better. I used to have this habit of dropping the racket each time I went to hit the ball. The worst thing was when I actually won a game - I was so pleased that I ran and tried to jump over the net but caught my foot on it, fell and -broke my arm.
My latest attempt to get fit was when I tried boxing at a local gym. I'll never forget my first fight I climbed into the ring and the bell went for the start
of the first round I just shut my eyes and swung my fist. Unfortunately, I hit the referee and not my opponent heedless to say that was the end of my boxing career. Next I decided to take up mountaineering. I booked a holiday in the Himalayas with two old school friends. On our first climb I managed to slip and found myself hanging on the end of a rope half way up a mountain. All my friends could do was to call out to me to hold on until the rescue party arrived. I guess I'll never learn. I keen on wanting to try out other sports even though I know I'll never be a champion!
Read the passage about extreme sports and answer the questions 1-6. Choose a, b, cord.
Extreme sports are described as activities which have a high level of danger. Examples of common extreme sports include skydiving, rock climbing, surfing, scuba diving, water skiing, mountain biking and snowboarding. These sports often involve speed, height and great physical effort.
Extreme sports differ from standard sports because they are affected by environmental obstacles and challenges, including weather and terrain. Because natural obstacles, such as wind, snow, water and mountains, cannot be controlled, they inevitably affect the outcome of the given sport or event. In contrast, in a standard sporting event, athletes compete against each other under controlled circumstances. While it is possible to create a controlled extreme sporting event, there are often factors which cannot be held constant. Examples include snow conditions for snowboarders, rock and ice quality for climbers and wave height for surfers.
Most people that engage in extreme sports do so for the so-called 'adrenaline rush'. Under circumstances which cause fear, the hormone adrenaline is released, along with serotonin and endorphins, substances which produce a physical state of excitement and a general sense of well-being. Extreme sports fanatics claim that participating in such challenging activities allows them to develop their physical as well as mental skills and gives them the satisfaction of mastering inhospitable environments.
1. In order to be labelled as an extreme sport, the sport must
- be physically exerting.
- take place in harsh weather conditions,
- be done at high speeds and altitudes.
- have a high level of danger.
2. How are standard sports different from extreme sports?
- Athletes do not compete against each other in extreme sports.
- Standard sports are usually played in a controlled environment.
- с The outcome of a standard sport is constant.
- Standard sports are always played, despite the weather.
3. Why are snow conditions, rock and ice quality and wave height referred to in the text?
- Because they affect only specific sports.
- They are referred to as factors that must be controlled.
- They are given as examples of changeable conditions.
- Because these conditions are necessary for each sport.
4. The hormone adrenaline is released
- when someone is excited.
- when someone is relaxed.
- when someone is frightened.
- by serotonin and endorphins.
5. Extreme sports fanatics
- have more advanced mental skills than regular athletes.
- need high levels of serotonin.
- have the ability to conquer all natural obstacles.
- enjoy the adrenaline rush which accompanies extreme sports.
6. People who participate in extreme sports
- get a sense of achievement from overcoming the obstacles.
- enjoy being in inhospitable environments.
- want to be allowed to participate in even more challenging activities.
- need substances like serotonin and endorphins to develop their physical skills.
