Travelling as a Way of Exploring the World

Методическая разработка урока английского языка для учащихся 8 класса

Тип урока: повторение и закрепление новых знаний с использованием информационно-коммуникационных технологий

Оснащение урока:  компьютер, интерактивная доска, программа для интерактивной доски, аудиозапись,   раздаточные методические материалы.

Цель урока: создать условия для формирования следующих компетенций:

1. информационной:  способность к самостоятельному отбору необходимых знаний из большого информационного потока;
2. учебно-познавательной: умение варьировать изученный материал в зависимости от цели его использования;
3. коммуникативной: умение использовать лексический и грамматический материал в рамках темы; умение творчески ее перерабатывать и доносить до аудитории; умение работать в парах; умение находить несколько вариантов решения проблемы;
4. социокультурной: развивать интеллектуальные и творческие способности учащихся в процессе изучения языка и культуры;
5. личностного определения: способность отстаивать свою позицию, формулировать свои личные взгляды на заданную проблему.

Задачи урока:

1. развивать навыки монологической устной речи; активизировать ранее изученную лексику по теме «Путешествие» в устной речи через  использование спайдеграммы, работы с текстом;
2. развивать навыки аудирования, умения общаться на английском языке через   прослушивание диалогов;
3. развивать учебные умения: умения обобщать, выделять главное, анализировать, сопоставлять, находить сходное и различное, устанавливать взаимосвязи; развивать у учащихся самостоятельность мышления через  использование презентации для интерактивной доски;
4. развивать интеллектуальные способности учащихся;
5. формирование готовности строить взаимоотношения с окружающим миром на основе сотрудничества и быть толерантной личностью.

Ход урока

I Организационный момент

1. Приветствие: 

Учитель: Good morning, boys and girls! I’m very glad to see you. How are you today? Fine. Now I see you are ready to start working.

2. Вступительное слово учителя: 

- How do you find the weather today?

- Does your mood depend on weather?

- OK. I’m glad that you have a good mood, so I wish you work hard today.

Учащиеся отвечают на вопросы учителя.

II Целеполагание и мотивация.

Учитель: We’ve spoken a lot how to spend free time. Travelling is considered to be one of the ways of spending holidays and it plays an important part in the entertainment of people and learning about the world because it is better to see once than to read or to hear about countries some times. Now look at the board and name the theme of our lesson today (Приложение 1).

1. Let’s translate the theme of our lesson today.
2. What do you think what we are going to do during the lesson?
3. Today we are summing up our knowledge and skills on the topic: “Travelling as a Way of Exploring the World”.

At the board you can see the quotation by St. Augustine “The World is a great book of which they who never stir from home read only a page.” (Приложение 2) Comment on the lines. Do you agree with these words?

III Речевая зарядка

Учитель: By the way, what is the meaning of the word “travelling”?

Учащиеся: Travelling is moving from one place to another.

Учитель: Do you like travelling?

Учащиеся: Yes, I do. I like travelling because … .

Учитель: Ok. Let’s take the word “travelling” and create 5 associations to this word. Write them down. Work in pairs, please.

(Учащиеся в парах записывают 5 ассоциаций к слову «Путешествие»)

Учитель: Ready? Now read your associations, please. I see you have different associations to this word because you have different experience of travelling. But why do people travel? Look at the scheme and try to complete it. Choose the phrase and put it in the scheme with the help of the marker. Two reasons are given to you. (Приложение 3)

Why do people travel?

1. to see new places
2. to visit interesting places
3. to discover new places
4. to become more educated person
5. to try to different food
6. to see world wonders
7. to improve knowledge of foreign language
8. to meet new people
9. to broaden people’s scope

(Ученики подходят к интерактивной доске, выбирают цель путешествия  и с помощью маркера помещают фразу в спайдеграмму)

Учитель: Very well. You know most people enjoy travelling. Some people travel for pleasure and some on business, some travel light and some take a lot of luggage on their travels.

IV Работа со стихотворением. Активизация изученной лексики.

Учитель:  Look at the board and read the poem:

We go by car

And we go by train.

We go by ship

And we go by plane.

We go by land

And sea and air.

We go, go, go

From here to there. (Приложение 4)

(Учащиеся читают вслух стихотворение)

Учитель:  We choose various means of transportation. What way of travelling do you know?

(Учащиеся называют средства передвижения)

Учитель: - What is the fastest way of travelling?

4. What way of travelling is cheaper than travelling by air and popular, too?
5. Why do many people often choose to travel by train?
6.  What is the most comfortable and expensive means of travelling?
7.  What is one of the cheapest means of travelling?
8. Why do many people prefer travelling by car?
9. As for me I prefer travelling by car because I don’t like to depend on tickets. And what are your favourite means of transportation?  

IV Работа с текстом. Работа в группах.

Учитель: Now I want you to read a short funny story about a tourist from the North who came to the South for holidays. The story is unfinished. Read it and try to make up the ending of the story. Work in groups.

“A Witty Guide”

The Florida beach and the blue sky looking inviting to the tourist from the North. He was going to swim, so he asked his guide:

10. “You`re sure there are no alligators here, aren`t you?”
11. “No, no”, replied the guide smiling. “There are no alligators here.”

The tourist was no longer afraid. He stepped into the water and was about to swim. Then he shouted to the guide again:

12. “What makes you sure there aren`t any alligators?”…

 Учитель: Ready to finish up the story? OK. Give the ending of the story. (Ученики работают в группах. Им предлагается придумать конец рассказу)

Учитель: Do you want to know the real ending of the story? Ok.

“What makes you sure there aren’t any alligators?” “They’ve got too much sense” answered the guide. “They are afraid of sharks”.

13. Whose ending was the most exact?
14. What dangerous things can a tourist come across?
15. What must a tourist remember about starting for the South? What preparations are necessary to be made before a journey? (clothes, food)
16. What must a tourist do to avoid danger?

V Работа по карточкам. Введение новой лексики.

And now imagine that you are going to travel abroad to some country in the North or in the South. Choose the things which are necessary for your trip. Let’s read the list of the things. (Приложение 5)

8. A thermos

Учитель: You may add some words if you need. Prove your ideas. Look at the board. You see the flag. What country is it?  What season is it? How long does your trip continue? Choose things with the help of the marker and explain your choice. Use set-phrases. (Приложение 6, 7)

(Ученик выходит к интерактивной доске и с помощью маркера выбирает предметы, которые уме будут необходимы во время путешествия и аргументирует свой выбор)

 VI Аудирование

 Учитель: Many people usually prefer to travel by plane because it is the fastest and the most comfortable way of travelling. And of course they must have abroad passport and pass the passport control. Look at the picture. (Приложение 8)

- This is the main lobby of an airport and here you can see the passport control. You will listen to the dialogue between the customs officer and the passenger twice. Tick the right answer on the cards. (Приложение 9)

1. Your passport, please.
2. Here you are.
3. Miss Tatyana Smirnova.
4. Yes, that's right.
5. How long are you going to stay in Britain?
6. For three weeks.
7. And what's the reason for your visit?
8. I am going to do an English course in Oxford. I want to learn some more English.  But first I'm planning to stay in London for three days to meet n: friend.
9. Have you got any documents from your school?
10. Yes. Here is a copy of all the documents from the school. And this is the address of the family I'll be staying with.
11. Your English sounds very good.
12. Thanks. Actually, this will be my second language course in Britain.
13. OK. Here is your passport and your school documents. Enjoy your stay.
14. Thank you. Goodbye.
15. Goodbye.

(Каждый ученик садится за компьютер и прослушивает диалог дважды с помощью наушников. После прослушивания ему предлагается выполнить тест)

Учитель: Your time is over.   Check your partner’s answers.

VII Презентация и защита проектов

Учитель: Everybody dreams of travelling to faraway countries. During the week you have been working in groups and individually at the projects on the topic “The World of Travelling”. Some of you have prepared the projects. We can see the results of your work here on the blackboard. Listen to very carefully. Be ready to ask questions and analyze the projects. (Приложение 9, Приложение 10)

Учитель: Now I want you to answer the question: “What is travelling for you?”

(Ученики отвечают на вопрос)

Учитель: OK. And now let’s check your answers. Were you right or not? I want you to answer the questions to the Quiz “Are you a Thrill-Seeker?”  (Приложение 11)

Choose the alternative that best describes your likes or dislikes, or the way you feel.

a)  I sometimes like to go things that are a little frightening.
b)  Sensible people avoid dangerous activities.
c)  I love being terrified!

a) I enter cold water gradually, giving myself time to get used to it.
b) It’s fun to dive of jump right into the ocean or a cold pool.
c) I won’t go in the water unless it’s very warm.

a) When I go on holiday, I want a decent room and a bed at least.
b) I like going camping and doing without the conveniences of everyday life.
c) I expect a bit of luxury on holiday.

a) I think it would be really exciting to do a parachute jump.
b) Jumping out of a plane, with or without a parachute, is crazy.
c) I’d consider doing a parachute jump if I had proper training.

a) People who ride motorbikes must have some kind of unconscious desire to hurt themselves.
b) Riding a motorbike at high speed is one of the most exciting things you can do.
c) Motorbikes are just another means of transport.

SCORING

Add up your total and see if the person described below sounds like you:

1-3 Very low on thrill-seeking. You like your comfort above all else. You’ll do everything possible to avoid dangerous or unpredictable situations. Why not try taking a risk now and then? You might surprise yourself!

4-7 You seem to have found a very good balance between healthy excitement and unnecessary risk. You give yourself challenges which make you an interesting person to know.

8-10 The ultimate thrill-seeker. You’re a bit of a wild one! Watch out thought that you don’t start taking stupid or dangerous risks just for the buzz. Remember it can be addictive!

IX Подведение итогов урока

Учитель:  You have just read the information about you. Do you agree with it? And now look at the board. Let’s read the quotation by George Moore. Do you agree with these words? Prove your opinion. (Приложение 12)

“A man travels the world over in search of what he needs, and returns home to find it.”    

Учитель: And now let’s have a conclusion. Look at the board. You can see 3 flowers: a red rose, a bluebell and a yellow rose.  Choose the flower according to your psychological test and put it into the basket.  (Приложение 13)

(Ученики по очереди подходят в интерактивной доске, выбирают цветок  и размещают его в корзине)

Учитель: What a beautiful basket it is! I think travelling is a very useful thing for us and I wish you to enjoy all kinds of travelling. Thank you for the lesson. Good-bye!
