The last half of the XVI and the XVII centuries are known as the golden age of English literature. It was the time of the English Renaissance, and sometimes it is even called “ the age of Shakespeare ”.

Though William Shakespeare is recognized as one of literature’s greatest influences, very little actually known about him. What we do know about his life comes from registrar records, court records, wills, marriage certificates and his tombstone. William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon .

The things that we know about Shakespeare’s life begin with the date when he was baptised in the church on April 26, 1564 , when he was only a few days old. So he is believed to have been born on April 23. William was the third child of John and Mary Shakespeare . There were six children in the family. His father was a glove-maker . His mother, Mary, was the daughter of a farmer. William grew up in Henley Street .

William was educated at the King’s New Grammar School which taught boys basic reading and writing. There he learned to love reading.

On November 28,1582 an eighteen-year-old William married the twenty-six Anne Hathaway . His father was pleased his son was married, but his mother didn’t want him to marry so young. Anne came to live in Henley Street. We don’t know how he earned his living during these early years, perhaps he helped his father in the family business. During these years his three children were born: Susannah and twins - a son, Hamnet and another girl, Judith .

In 1587 Shakespeare went to work in London, leaving Anne and the children at home. We don’t know exactly why he did it. Some people say that the reason was his love of poetry and theatre. But there is another story which says that he had to run away from law because he killed some deer belonging to a rich man.

There is a story that Shakespeare’s first job in London was holding rich men’s horses at the theatre door. But nobody can be sure that this story is true. Later, he became an actor and a member of one of the chief acting companies. Soon he began to write plays for this company and in a few years became a well-known author. From 1594 Shakespeare spent his acting career with the Lord Chamberlain's Company, which was renamed the King's Company in 1603 when James succeeded to the throne. The group acquired interests in two theatres in the Southwark area of London, near the banks of the Thames - the Globe and Blackfriars.

The Globe Theatre was an early English Theatre in London. Most of Shakespeare's plays were first presented at the Globe . The brothers Cuthbert and Richard Burbage constructed the theatre in 1599 from the wood. They erected the Globe in the area known as the Bankside on the south side of the River Thames in the suburb of Southwark . The G lobe was round or hexagonal on the outside and round on the inside. It may have held as many as 3,000 spectators. The original Globe burned down in 1613, and was immediately rebuilt. It was closed in 1642. Now Shakespeare's Globe has been opened to the public again. It was officially opened by Her Majesty the Queen on Thursday, 12 June, 1997 and its opening season ran from May 29th to September 21st, 1997.

The first tragedy that brought great popularity to Shakespeare was ‘‘ Romeo and Juliet ’’. This tragedy was the first play that reflected the real feelings of love. Shakespeare was a great poet and would be well known for his poetry alone. His major achievement as a poet is his sonnets , first published in 1609 . A sonnet is a poem consisting of 14 lines, with a moral at the end . Shakespeare sonnets are excellent. They are full of harmony and music. Shakespeare’s poetry is at the summit of human achievement. In 1613 Shakespeare stopped writing and went to live in Stratford where he spent his last years.

This is the place where the house in which Shakespeare died used to be. It was a big housebought by William Shakespeare for his family when he was still in London. Here he spent the last years of his life. Unfortunately, the house was destroyed.

Shakespeare died in 1616 on his birthday, which was April 23, in Stratford-upon-Avon . He died when he was 52. We have two different sources. The first one says his cause of death was unknown. The second one says he died after drinking with his theat re friends. He left his properties to a single male heir who died about fifty year s later. Then, all his properties were sold to strangers. Nothing remained in the family.

Shakespeare wrote 37 plays . Among them there are tragedies, such as ‘‘Hamlet’’, ‘‘King Lear’’, ‘’Othello’’ ‘‘Macbeth ’’, comedies, such as ‘’Twelfth Night’’, ‘’Much Ado About Nothing’’ , etc. Most of Shakespeare’s plays were not published in his lifetime. So some of them may have been lost in the fire when the “Globe’’ burned down in 1613. The first collected edition of Shakespeare's works was published posthumously in 1623 and is known as the First Folio . The plays fall into the categories of history, tragedy, comedy and tragicomedy . Many centuries have passed since his death in 1616, but Shakespeare is still considered to be the greatest of all playwrights and poets.
