РАЗДЕЛ «ЧТЕНИЕ»
TEXT 1
1. Прочитайте и переведите отрывок из письма русского мальчика Максима, которое он написал своему американскому другу о своей семье.
Yesterday my friend visited me and brought me a book about genealogy. The book interested me greatly.
Through genealogy we can trace our roots. Who our ancestors were, when and where they were born, whom they married, how many children they had and when they died. I decided to draw my family tree. There were not many branches on it. I found out that I didn’t know much about my relatives. I only knew that my ancestors had been peasants. They were poor, but cheerful and industrious, they had a lot of children, but most of them died of hunger and diseases.
My father’s parents were also from the village, but they were ambitious and gifted.
They got higher education and found well-paid jobs. They are highly-qualified economists now.
My mother’s father died 5 years ago, and her mother lives in a village. My granny is my best friend, she has no education, but she is wise and has got life experience. She can always give advice, understand and forgive. She has a heart of gold.
My mother is an accountant in a big firm. She has to work very hard and must be very attentive. My Mum comes home very tired and I do my best to help her. I’m proud of my Mum. She is very smart and attractive. My father is an engineer. He is clever, industrious, but a bit absent-minded. He is always in high spirits and has a perfect sense of humor. We are great friends.
My elder brother and I look very different. I have blue eyes and his eyes are brown. We both have fair hair, but his hair is short? And mine is long and straight. I’m tall and thin. He is short and heavy. I’m pale and he is dark-skinned. Our lifestyles are also different. I go in for sports, but he rarely goes out. I’m very sociable, he has few friends. I’m always helpful, and he is a little bit lazy. But still we are very close.
Sometimes I think: “Whom do I take after?” I don’t know the answer yet. But there is one thing I know for sure: though I want to be clever, strong-willed and industrious like my relatives, I will never become somebody’s exact copy.

Vlad: Good morning, Mum. How are you?
Mother: Fine, thanks. Did you sleep well?
Vlad: Yes, thank you. And where is Dad?
Mother: He went out half an hour ago together with Alexei. They went shopping. Well, Vlad, it is your birthday soon. Are you going to have a birthday party this year?
Vlad: Well, I’d love to. You know, Mum, now when I’m at college I have got many new friends. It would be nice if I could invite them to my place.
Mother: Excellent idea! Let’s count how many friends you are going to call so that I can think about the menu and all the things.
Vlad: I want to ask my best friends. They are Ilya, Stepan and Igor.
Mother: Do I know any of them?
Vlad: I suppose you have seen Ilya. Maybe you remember that broad-shouldered fellow with fair hair and dark eyes. We came across him in the street the other day.
Mother: Ah, now I know whom you are talking about. He is fond of music and plays the guitar very well, as you told me. Okay, what about the rest?
Vlad: Stepan is a funny slim little guy with brown hair and a snub nose. He is fond of reading fantasy and I took several books from him to read. He is an easy-going fellow. I like to talk to him. He came to our place in October. But you were not in at that time. Dad saw him, I believe. And Igor is my new friend. He is very clever. He is a computer genius, the teachers say. But he is not a bookworm. He plays volleyball and swims well.
Mother: Do you want to call any of your former schoolmates?
Vlad: Actually, it will be nice to invite Misha. I haven’t seen him for ages.
Mother: Good! And will you ask Lena to come?
Vlad: Oh, yes, certainly!
Mother: Then you will invite your friends with their girlfriends, too.
Vlad: You are right, Mum! Well, Igor’s girlfriends is at college with us, and Ilya took Masha hiking this summer, you know, when our group went on a three-days’ hike. She is good-natured and friendly. And just a week ago I saw Stepan with a remarkable long-legged girl with blond hair. I suspect it is his new mate.
Mother: What about Misha?
Vlad: So far as I know he doesn’t have a girlfriend at the moment.
Mother: Maybe you will invite one of your former classmates who is on friendly terms with him.
Vlad: Why not? I think I will invite Veronica. She is very sociable. I will be glad to see her, too.
Mother: So, how many people do we have, all in all?
Vlad: Let me see… Igor and Olga, Stepan and his girlfriend, Ilya, Masha, Misha and Veronica. Ah, and Lena and me of course. It makes 10 people all together. Well, it is going to be a magnificent party, Mum.
Mother: I’m sure of that.

My working day
Hello. My name is Vlad Volkov and I am a college student. I am in my first year now. I want to tell you about my usual working day.
It is 6.30 a.m. My younger brother Alexei is knocking at the door of my bedroom. But I stay in bed a little while longer. But anyway it is time to get up. I go to the bathroom and take a shower and clean my teeth, than come back to my room and switch on the television to watch the news while I am brushing my hair, shaving and putting my clothes on.
Now it is time for breakfast. All my family is at table – my mother, my father, Alexei and myself. We chat and discuss news.
After breakfast I look through my notes – just in case I have left something behind, put on my coat, then say good-bye to my mother and leave home. My father gives me a lift to the college in his car.
I arrive at my college just in time to say hello to my fellow-students before the bell goes. As a rule, we have three or four periods every day. We go to college 5 days a week. Saturday and Sunday are our days off. We have lectures and seminars. Sometimes we work in the workshops.
During the breaks we go to the gym and play a round or two of basketball or volleyball.
At 1 p.m. we have a long break. We go to the canteen. Then there is one more period, which is Maths. It is my favourite subject. The classes are over at 2.40 p.m. Sometimes I go to the library to study there.
On my way home I see my girlfriend Lena. She smiles at me and we walk together for a while. I think that she is not only the most beautiful girl, but also the best friend. I am really fond of her. She is still a schoolgirl, she is leaving school this year.
I come to my place at about 4 p.m. Mother is already at home. She is cooking in the kitchen. Soon my father and brother arrive and we have dinner together. After dinner I do my lessons for tomorrow, watch television and read. I don’t go out because the weather has become worse. I go to bed at about 11.30 p.m.

I had my first contact with English when I was six. My dad inspired me to listen to the Beatles. I listened to them every day for the next 7 years. In the beginning I could understand nothing of what they were singing. But soon I started to understand individual words, especially the ones which appeared in the song titles.
Later I got a book with the words of all the songs. I read the book many times. I learned many songs by heart. I sang the songs to myself. Still, I understood very little of the meaning. It became my dream to learn English so well that I could understand the Beatles. So the Beatles were my first motivation. That is how I started on my way towards learning English.

- OK, Rod. How did you become a computer programmer?
- You know, I’m not completely sure. It just kind of happened… I supposed it started with my love of Maths. It was my best subject at school. And I used to spend a long time by myself at home, playing on the computer. Then I went to university to study computer science and I suppose. I just followed the fashion – straight into a job as a programmer.
- Do you enjoy your work?
- I did at first, but now there’s so much stress. Our field is so competitive. I’ve made my choice, though and it would be difficult for me to change now. Anyway, the money’s good and living in London is expensive.

TEXT 10
- Nowadays more and more social problems are associated with being young. What teens` problems are discussed in this magazine article? While reading find the correct meaning of the highlighted words in the column on the right and tick it.
WHAT MAKES OUR CHILDREN DO THIS?
Today it is fashionable to speak about teenage problems. A few years ago alcohol, fights, killings and other kinds of violence (a. detective stories, b. disagreement, c. cruel actions) were more problems for adults than for young people.
But now violence, AIDS, drugs and alcohol are more and more associated with youngsters. For many children from poor families violence, drinking problems and all that is associated with poverty (a. problem, b. lack of good life, c. disease) becomes more real than reality.
The Government surveys show that every fifth teenager who was
arrested for criminal actions was younger than 14 and could not be
sent to prison(a. place for criminals, b. private school, c. children`s home). Almost half of teenagers have an experience with drugs, alcohol and sex under age of 16. A lot of teenagers who have drug or alcohol addiction (a. protection, b. dependence, c. disability) almost never believe that they are dependent. These things are often combined with family and school problems.
What has gone wrong? Some specialists explain that the changes of our society, the system of our life force young people to choose their own lifestyle. On the one hand, our society agrees that 15-17-year-old people are old enough to be responsible for what they do and give them quite a lot of freedom and rights. On the other hand, most adults think that teenagers are too young to be taken seriously. This misunderstanding produces many problems. Actually, a lot of teenagers say that their parents let them do anything they want are quite indifferent to their problems. Many teenagers get upset or depressed when they cannot solve their problems.
As a result, it makes them believe that there is only one way out – to stop living and commit suicide (a. enjoy oneself, b. wait for somebody, c. kill oneself).
No doubt, the teens` problems will increase. And young people
should feel that they are cared for.

Moscow is the largest city in the Russian Federation, the seat of the government, the political, educational and cultural center of the country. The population of Moscow is over 9 million people, and the city is growing from day to day. Moscow being an ancient city one can come across the sights on every step.
The heart of Moscow is the Kremlin and Red Square. It is not only a historic center, but also a unique architectural ensemble, famous all over the world. The Kremlin includes over 20 towers joined by the wall. Each tower has its own name; the most famous one is the Spasskaya Tower with its chimes. On the territory of the Kremlin there are beautiful ancient cathedrals, Tsar Bell and Tsar Cannon and the Armoury Museum – the exhibition of the treasures of the Russian tsars, including icons, crowns, coaches, presents from monarchs of other countries and ceremonial dresses. The Spasskaya Tower outlooks Red Square and the Pokrovsky Cathedral, which is famous all over the world for its exotic beauty.
Not far from the Kremlin Arbat begins. It is the best-known street of the city. There is no traffic, so one can walk and enjoy watching the crowds of people strolling by. Arbat is the main tourist attraction after the Kremlin.
But Moscow is not only the Kremlin and Arbat. The best way to describe Moscow is probably to say that it is like any other metropolis in the world – lines of cars (and traffic jams!), hurrying people, tall buildings, elegant restaurants, night clubs and much more. Its appearance is not always attractive, but beyond any doubt, fascinating and capturing!

- Here is a painting of the famous Russian painter Victor Vasnetsov “Vityaz at the Crossroads” («Витязь на распутье»). The painter showed the world of Russian fairy tales in his works.
- How interesting!
- Yes, Russian fairy tales are full of mysteries and legendary persons. I think that the vityaz on the painting comes from old stories about Russian warriors.
- Sorry, what does “vityaz” mean?
- Vityaz is the Russian word for “knight” (рыцарь). They were very popular in old Russia. When I look at this painting I think it’s Ilya Muromets, a great warrior, who saved the country from the evil.

- Right.
- Oh, there is a great idea in the picture: we never know what is in the future. Could you repeat the name of the painter, please?

- Прочитайте текст “British Mass Media. Newspapers”. Ответьте на вопросы.
The British people are probably the greatest newspaper readers in the world. This explains the fact that there are quite a lot of editions of different kind. Generally, all the newspapers are divided into 2 groups. On the one hand, there are “quality” newspapers, which publish analytical articles on serious topics, involving economy, politics and business issues. Among the “quality” papers are The Times, The Guardian, The Financial Times, The Independent. Their circulation is not large, but their reputation is unshakeable. On the other Hand, there are “popular” papers, or “tabloids” which are considered entertaining rather than informative. People buy such kind of papers to learn the latest news on sports events, private life of celebrities and rumors. Their circulation is much larger compared to “quality” papers. They are usually less in size and use large letters for the headings to report sensational news. The newspapers of this kind have the word “Daily” in the name. There are usually a lot of photographs, crosswords, sketches, and commixes in these papers. Among them the most popular are Daily Express, The Sun, Daily Mail, Private Eye, Daily Mirror, Daily Star and others.
Besides newspapers of daily circulation, there are also the ones issued on Sundays. These may be either the supplements to the daily papers, or independent Sunday papers, which are larger in size than the daily ones and usually have several separate parts on different topics. They can be called family papers, as there is something to read for each member of the family: love stories, detective stories, facts from history, sport, art, and much more. These newspapers contain the word “Sunday” in their title. Besides, there are a great number of all kinds of magazines.
All the newspapers and magazines in the UK are privately owned. Fleet Street in London, which was known as the home of many newspapers, has now lost its prominence – the offices of many newspapers have moved away from London, as the rent is very high.

- Прочитайте мнения школьников и ответьте на вопрос: What is the best way not to waste time?
Anna: | For me there is nothing more important than dancing. I take lessons in Irish dancing. You might think that is boring, but it’s really good fun and enjoyable. I have a chance to travel to places like Canada and the States to compete. The only thing that matters for me now is to win in the World Championships of Irish dancing in Ireland. I’m going there this month. I’m excited about my hobby. I think it’s a brilliant hobby and people should try it before they say it’s boring. |
Tom: | When I come home from school I do nothing but relax because I’m very tired after a tough day at school. A like to sit in front of the telly with a bag of popcorn. I’m a bit of a couch potato. My favourite channel is MTV. My mum doesn’t like how I spend time. She says that I waste it. I don’t agree. Isn’t it fair just to relax? We all work very hard, especially when we have tests. More than that I get a lot out of TV. There is nothing I don’t know about my favourite group. And it’s also fun to be a fan! |
Ben: | There’s one thing that is worth doing after school – it’s playing sport. It’s not only enjoyable, but useful, too. Sport makes you healthy and fit. I’m mad about climbing and every spare minute I spend in the local climbing centre. The great thing about climbing is that you can become good quickly. I took up climbing about 6 month ago and I was Thrilled with it. It’s different from other sports. It’s challenging and it makes me feel really strong. I also like the feeling of helping others. I’ve made lots of friends here. I enjoy it. |

Nowadays the collection continues to expend. That is why it was necessary to reconstruct the Gallery and to give it extra floor space. At the beginning of the 1980s the Tretyakov Gallery was closed for reconstruction. In 1994 the Tretyakov Gallery opened its doors to the public. Several new halls have appeared. The conditions of painting storage have also been greatly improved.

TEXT 18
1. Прочитайте статью и выберите подходящий заголовок к ней.
- Teenagers ignore litter bins “to stay cool”.
- More litter bins in the streets!
- Teenagers against litter.
Teenagers have admitted they drop litter because they don’t think it’s cool to use a bin. A survey by the Tidy Britain Group found that boys say that putting rubbish in a bin would make them appear “soft” or “uncool”. Youngsters aged 13-16 were asked what they thought litter was, how big a problem it was in their area, who they thought dropped litter and why they did it.
Most teenagers believe rubbish is mainly made up of sweet and crisp wrappers and that richer areas are less likely to be littered than poorer ones. They also recognize that rubbish is a common thing in and around schools. When it comes to dropping litter, the kids questioned admitted their age group were the biggest culprits, with boys more to blame than girls. One 14-year-old said he dropped litter “365 days a year – ‘cos I’m always eating”.
A lack of waste bins was mentioned as an excuse for dropping rubbish, but the main reason given is laziness and peer pressure.
culprit – виновник
peer pressure – давление со стороны приятелей
wrapper - обертка

TEXT 19
1. Прочитайте стихотворение. Выучите его наизусть.
I am the Earth
And the Earth is me.
Each blade of grass,
Each honey tree,
Each bit of mud,
And stick and stone
Is blood and muscle,
Skin and bone.
And just as I
Need every bit
Of me to make
My body fit,
So Earth needs
Grass and stone and tree
And things that grow here
Naturally.
2. О чем это стихотворение? Как бы вы его назвали? Согласны ли вы с его смыслом?
