THREE GOLD DOLLS
One day the Old Bird wanted to learn if the king was clever. So she sent.the king three gold dolls. All three dolls looked the same but they were worth different sums of money. The Old Bird asked the king to say which of three dolls was worth the most. The king looked at the dolls for a long time. He thought and thought but he could think of no answer. Now there was a young man in that country. He was very poor and worked for a rich man. But he was clever and everybody knew this. When he heard about the Old Bird's dolls, he told the king's men that he could help the king. The king told his men to bring the young man to the palace. The young man came, looked at the dolls and saw that each of them had a small hole in its ear. Then he took a straw and pushed it into the ear of one doll. The end of the straw showed out of the doll's mouth. The young man took the second doll and pushed the straw into its ear. The end of the straw showed out of the other ear. When the young man pushed the straw into the ear of the third doll, the end of the straw did not show out at all. The young man thought a little about this and then said: "Listen, О king, these dolls are very much like people. The first doll is like a man who tells others everything that you tell him. Such a man is a bad friend. The second doll is like a man that soon forgets what you tell him. Such a man is also a bad friend. But the third doll is like a man who forgets nothing and does not tell others what he must not tell. Such a man is a good friend. So the third doll is worth the most." THE BIRDS, THE ANIMALS AND THE BAT
Many years ago the birds and the animals were enemies and they made war on each other. The bat who was half bird and half animal said he could not take any side. So he did nottake part in the fighting and wanted to save his life. He thought: "I'll wait and see who is going to win, then I'll go over to the winners."
When the fighting began, he sat in a tree and watched it with great interest. It seemed that the birds were going to win, and the bat went over to the birds and asked them to take him as a soldier in their army.
"I am a bird," he said, "and in this hour of fighting my place is with you."
The fighting continued and soon the animals showed that they were stronger. The bat went over to the animals. "Look, I am very much like a mouse," he told them. "Let me be one of you." The animals agreed.
The fighting continued. The birds fought bravely and they had a very clever and brave general. So they were the winners and peace was made.
