Sport in Russia.

To begin with, like millions people all over the world people in Russia can regard themselves as good sportsmen, indulging in different kinds of sport. Those Russians who live in the north grow with outdoor winter sports and activities such as skiing, skating, shooting and fishing.  To tell the truth, many sports, for example, hockey, soccer are played with less enthusiasm in Russia. Combat sport, wrestling, figure-skating, chess and the like have firmly established themselves in favour among different people Russia. They say, participants iare attracted by technical sports competition such as motor-racing, motor-cycle racing, parachute jumping and motor boat racing.

It is interesting to remark; Russians are known to be all enthusiastic spectator that’s why you can hardly find grown-ups and youngsters not supporting their favourite sports club or team. More and more people try to take-up sports on a regular basis because they want to stay in a good shape, to keep fit, to be healthy.  They try to assist in swimming, they go to gyms for aerobics or yoga classes, to work-out on a treadmill. Some people jog every morning, some play tennis.

Generally speaking, scores of the middle-aged used to do sports in the so-called “health-group” because it’s a good possibility of taking part in favourite sports. You see, 3 times a week under the guidance of an experienced coach and a doctor in attendance they engage in doing sports.

Broadly speaking, physical culture is known to be a part of everyone’s life, starting in kindergartens and finishing at work. In kindergartens doing exercises and playing games, children take their first sporting steps. Being on the programmer of schools, Institutes and colleges, physical culture lessons are compulsory (обязательный) for all children. To indulge in sports is useful for their health and progress in studies. In all schools you can see gyms and sports grounds, where children do exercises.

Sports societies and clubs turn out to be other form of drawing population into sports activities. The biggest clubs are considered to be Spartak, Dinamo, Zenit or Lokomotiv, which take part in different international tournaments.

I must say, soviet and Russian sportsmen have set up many records in various sports at World and European championships. They are known to have scored outstanding victories and have carried off more medals than any other teams in all Olympics since 1956.

Taking everything into consideration, I must say develop physical culture and sport in our country is necessary, because the aim is not only to make people’s leisure time more pleasant, but prevent various illnesses and prolong active life. “A sound mind in a healthy body”, as the old proverb goes. Having become a matter of national importance sporting activities in our country, physical training and sport can turn into a truly mass affair.

As for me, I prefer playing volleyball and tennis. When a pupil, I’d like taking part in different competitions. I disciplined myself to exercise every day. It is worth keeping our bodies in perfect condition. If you have a regular, strenuous exercise program, you can stay healthy for a long time. The benefits (преимущества) of regular exercises are a healthier heart, stronger bone and resistance to various diseases.
