The United Kingdom is situated on the British Isles. The British Isles consist of two large islands, Great Britain and Ireland, and a great number of small islands. Their total area is over 244000 sq. km. The British Isles are separated from the European continent by the North Sea and the English Channel. The western coast of Great Britain is washed by the Atlantic Ocean and the Irish Sea. Northern Ireland occupies one third of the island of Ireland. It borders on the Irish Republic in the south. The island of Great Britain consists of three main parts: England, Wales and Scotland. The population of the United Kingdom is over 60 million people. England England is the largest and the richest country of Great Britain. The capital of England is London. But there are other large industrial cities, such as Birmingham, Manchester and other famous and interesting cities such as York, Chester, Oxford and Cambridge.
Scotland Scotland is a country in the north of Great Britain. It is a part of the United Kingdom. The capital of Scotland is Edinburgh, well known for its castle. Glasgow is the industrial capital of Scotland. It is the third largest city in Great Britain.
Wales Wales is the country in the west of Great Britain. Cardiff, a large city in the south, was chosen as the capital of Wales mainly because of its size.
Northern Ireland Northern Ireland , also known as Ulster, is still a part of the United Kingdom. One third of the population lives in and around the capital, Belfast . Belfast is also the most important port and commercial and industrial centre.
London is the capital of Great Britain. It’s a very old city. It is two thousand years old. London is not only the capital of the country, it is also a huge port. The population of London is about 9 million people. London has got three parts: the City of London, the West End, The East End. The City of London is the financial centre of the UK. The West End is the centre of London. The East End of London is the district for the working people. The City is the money of London. The West End is the goods of London. The Houses of Parliament The British Parliament sits in the Building which is called the Palace of Westminster. It’s also called the Houses of Parliament because there are two Houses: the House of Lords and the House of Commons. The palace lies on the north bank of the River Thames in the London borough of the City of Westminster, close to other government buildings in Whitehall.
Big Ben Big Ben is the huge bell in the Clock Tower on the eastern end of the Houses of Parliament . It is 96.3 metres high . The bell may have been named after Sir Benjamin Hall, who supervised the rebuilding of Parliament. The booming 13.5-ton bell first rang out in 1859.
The Tower of London The Tower on the north bank of the Thames is one of the most ancient buildings of London. It was founded in the 11 th century by William the Conqueror. For many centuries the Tower was a fortress, a palace, a prison and a royal treasury. It is now a museum of arms and armour, and, as one of the strongest fortresses in Britain, it has the Crown Jewels.
Westminster Abbey The other interesting place is Westminster Abbey , which was founded in 1050. It is situated in the centre of London. Many great Englishmen were buried in the Abbey: Newton, Darwin and others. Westminster Abbey is a symbol of England. Westminster Abbey was built by king Edward in 1065. The coronation of all British kings and queens takes place in Westminster Abbey.
Buckingham Palace Buckingham Palace is the place where British kings and queens live when they are in London. It was built in the 18 th century. A lot of tourists go to Buckingham Palace.
St. Paul’s Cathedral St. Paul’s Cathedral is the work of the famous architect Sir Christopher Wren. It is said to be one of the finest pieces of architecture in Europe. The interior of the Cathedral is very beautiful. It is full of monuments.
Trafalgar Square There are many nice squares in London. Trafalgar Square is one of them and it is in the centre of the West End. One can see a statue of Lord Nelson in the middle of this square.
Stonehenge Stonehenge is the best known and probably the most remarkable of prehistoric remains in the UK. It has stood on Salisbury Plain for about 4,000 years. There have been many different theories about its original use, no one is certain why it was built.
