Burns Night
Robert Burns (1759-1796) Robert Burns, Scotland's national poet, was born on January 25, 1759 in Scotland. His father, William Burns, was a poor farmer. There were seven children in the family, and Robert was the eldest. His father knew the value of a good education, and he tried to give his children the best education he could afford. Robert was sent to school at the age of six, but as his father could not pay for the two sons, Robert and his brother Gilbert attended school in turn.
Burns' mother Agnes encouraged her sons to read . Their favourite writers were Shakespeare, Smolett and Robert Fergusson, a talented Scottish poet (1750 - 1774). Robert Burns began writing poetry at the age of fifteen. He composed poems based on the melodies of old folk songs, which he admired from early childhood.
Burns' first book was published in 1786 under the title Poems, Principally in the Scotch Dialect. Quickly enough, the poet's fame spread throughout Scotland. One of the best, from the point of view of literary critics, poems "Merry Beggars" Burns wrote in 1785.
In spite of the fact that Robert Burns's poems were very popular, he always remained poor. He worked hard and destroyed his hearth. He died in poverty at the age of thirty - seven in 1796.
The most popular poems of Robert Burns are The Tree of Liberty, My Heart's in the Highlands, A Red, Red Rose and many others.
Burns Night Burns Night marks the anniversary of the poet Robert Burns ’ birth, one of the most famous and celebrated Scots. Robert Burns was born on 25th January 1759, Burns Night takes place on 25th January each year.
Burns Night The first Burns supper was held in July 1801 when nine of Burns’ close friends got together to mark the fifth anniversary of their friend’s death. Taking place at Burns Cottage in Alloway, the night included a tasty meal (haggis, of course!), performances of Burns’ work and a speech in honour of the great Bard (now known as the Immortal Memory). The night was such a resounding success they decided to hold it again beginning the tradition.
Traditional food – the haggis
The evening always ends with singing Burns’ song “Auld Lang Syne” Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And auld lang syne! Chorus: For auld lang syne, my dear, For auld lang syne. We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet, For auld lang syne.
