CHANGING A TIRE

There is one job that is sure to brighten anyone's day: changing a tire. Add a little rain, a gusty wind, and some mud - and you are all set for a really fun time.

For those who have not had the pleasure, here are a few simple tips on what to do when you get a flat:

1) Try to park on a level spot. This is not always possible, but it will make things a lot easier.

2) Kick the tire. Nobody knows why, but everyone does it.

3) Place a rock or a wooden block in front and in back of the tire that is diagonally across from the flat.

4) Get out the jack, the tire wrench and the tire iron. Usually these are in the trunk, playing hide-and-seek with you.

5) Follow the car manual directions for using the jack, or ask Jack if he's around.

6) Make sure the jack is firmly seated on the ground.

7) Make sure you raise the car at proper place on the car frame. These spots should be shown in the manual.

8) Raise the car so that the flat tire is up, but not completely off the ground.

   9) Use the tire iron to pry off the hubcap. Keep the hubcap on the ground near the tire, with the inside of the hubcap facing up.

10) Loosen each of the lug nuts on the wheel.

11) Once the lug nuts are hand-loose, raise the car so that the flat tire is two or three inches off the ground.

12) Now, use the wrench to remove the lug nuts. Keep the lug nuts in the upturned hubcap until you are ready to put on the spare.

13) Remove the wheel and replace it with the spare tire. (You have the spare tire, right?)

14) Tighten each lug nut as far as you can with the wrench. Then lower the car until the spare tire rests on the ground and finish tightening each nut.

15) When tightening lug nuts, work in a cross pattern, and tighten them evenly. In other words, do not tighten one nut all the way before moving on to the next one. Tighten all of the nuts partially before tightening any of them completely.

16) Replace the hubcap.

17) Lower the jack and put everything away.
