10-th Form. (The second term) Task 1. Read the text and do the next task.

People throw away millions of tons of rubbish every year. Now, we haven’t got enough places to put it. If we don’t do something soon, rubbish will be everywhere - on the ground, in the sea and maybe even in space!

What’s the problem? The problem with rubbish is that it is ugly and it smells bad. It can also harm people, animals, plants and trees. Some things we throw away in our rubbish bins can poison our soil, water and air.

Every year each family in Great Britain creates one ton of rubbish. Every day you take your rubbish out. What happens to that rubbish? It pollutes water and land.

Piles of old cars, old refrigerators, old boxes, glass jars, cans are not very pleasant to look at. If you throw one plastic bottle, it will litter the Earth forever. That’s why we must not throw litter on the ground. It is not only ugly, but it can be harmful to wildlife and people. Small animals can get hurt on sharp cans or broken bottles. Plastic bottles can’t be recycled and plastic won’t even degrate. So we must try not to buy drinks and food packed in plastic.

There is no need to throw away things we do not want or cannot use any more. We can change many things back into what they were made of and use them again. We must also learn not to litter. We all know the sign: “Do not litter”.

What can we do to help? We can recycle many things like magazines, newspapers and mobile phones. We can also use some rubbish such as vegetable or fruit peelings to make compost. If we all help, the amount of rubbish will reduce.

Did you know that we could recycle 60% of the rubbish that is in our landfills? Well, it’s true. It takes 70% less energy to make paper from recycled materials than from trees. Recycling paper saves hundreds of trees a month. We use about 15 million plastic bottles a day. Plastic can take up to 500 years to break down.

We can use glass as many times as we want. One recycled glass bottle can save enough energy to power a computer for 25 minutes. We throw away about 50 million tonnes of aluminium a year.
One recycled aluminium container can save enough energy to power a TV for 3 hours.
