                      «How do you know English and English-speaking countries»

             «How do you know English and English-speaking countries»

Цели:

• повышение мотивации к изучению английского языка;
• воспитание любви и уважения к странам изучаемого языка;
• знакомство учащихся с интересными и малоизвестными фактами по географии, истории, культуре стран изучаемого языка;
• развитие социо-культурной компетенции;
• расширение кругозора учащихся.

Задачи:

• развивать умение воспринимать информацию на слух;
• совершенствовать навыки говорения;
• развивать умение выбирать рациональные способы работы, умение работать коллективно;
• развивать речь, мышление, сенсорную, эмоционально-волевую области.

Оборудование: компьютер, проектор, экран, CD проигрыватель, раздаточный материал (ответные листы).

Ход викторины

Учащиеся предварительно были разделены на две команды по 4 человека в каждой. Каждая команда сидит за одним столом, где заранее приготовлен лист для отгадывания названия и ручка. Класс оформлен в страноведческой тематике – плакатами, газетами, флагами, сувенирами, постерами. Все задания, кроме говорения, сопровождаются фоновой музыкой.

Вступительное слово учителя

You are going to have aquiz to day devoted to Englishand English - speaking countries. Let’s see the plan of the quizand the number of points you can get for each part. It consists of five parts:

1. English-speaking countries

• Royal Family – 5 points
• USA – 5 points
• Canada– 5 points
• Australian Animals -10 points

2. Borrowings – 27 points

3. Idioms Quiz

• Nose idioms – 5 points
• Colour idioms – 5 points

4. Speaking – 5 points

5. Guess the melody – 13 points

The total number of points you can get is 80. Before we start the quiz each team should guess its name. You will be asked questions and the first letter of the word which is the answer should be written under the number of the question. We’ll start with the last letter of the name to make the task more challenging.

Учащиеся отгадывают свои названия – THISTLE и SHAMROCK. На столы ставятся таблички с названиями команд и раздаются ответные листы.

I. English-speaking countries.

Teacher:

The first task is Royal Family Quiz. 

You should choose the correct answer out of the four given a, b, c or d. The task will appear on the screen only for some seconds and then disappear, so you should think quickly. Write your answers on the answer sheets. After you have finished your answers will be assessed by the judge (another teacher of  English). Let’s start.

Now I’d like to present some interesting information connected with the lives of the British monarchs.

The next part of the quiz is about the USA. The task is the same – multiple choice. The time is limited. Let’s start.

The next part of the quiz is another English-speaking country - Canada.Choose the correct answer a, b, c or d.

Teacher:

Another part of the quiz is devoted to Australia, to be more precise, to its animals. The task is different from the previous ones, you’ll have to match the animals with their pictures. The time is limited - one minute, after this the task will disappear from the screen. Let’s start.

II. Borrowings.

Teacher:

The next task is about the English language, its borrowings. Your task is to decide which language the word was borrowed from and fill in the table. Even if you do not know the answer, try to think logically and guess the correct answer.

III. Idioms Quiz.

Teacher:

Do you know English? Let us see who knows it better. Your task is to match “nose idioms” with their definitions. The time is limited. Let’s start.

The following part is “colour idioms”. Match the idioms with the correct definition. The task will appear on the screen only for several seconds. Let’s start.

Now let’s learn some facts about the Death Valley. Who knows anything about it?

Read the information on the screen and look at the pictures.

IV. Speaking.

Teacher:

The fourth part of the quiz is speaking – A Crazy Race. It’s about Britain, its people and traditions. Each team will be given two questions to answer. Even if you do not know the correct answers, try to speculate, think logically and give reasoning to your answers. Each participant is welcome with the ideas.

Правильные ответы:

The police do not need guns. Criminals don’t have many guns, and it is difficult to buy guns, even illegally, in Britain. If the police started using guns, then criminals would also arm themselves and more people would die.

Everybody who owns a television set in the UK has to pay 110 pounds a year for a license. The money from the license is given to the BBC and so they don’t need to raise money from adverts.

Scotland has its own currency: Scottish pounds. You can use them everywhere in the UK.

“Toad” just means sausage. “Toad in the hole” is an English dish of sausages baked in dough.

V. Guess the melody.

Teacher:

The last contest is the most exciting one. It’s Guess the Melody. You will listen to 8 melodies or songs and you have to decide what country this melody is associated with and if it is a song, guess the singer (Звучат фрагменты мелодий и песен).

VI. Conclusion.

После выполнения задания подсчитываются баллы за правильные ответы, затем подводится общий итог, выявляется победитель и происходит награждение победителей.
