- QUESTIONS
- What is happiness for you? Give your reasons.
- And what is it for your friends? What can your partner say?
- How can you explain why some people think only about their personal happiness?
P1 - Happiness is when you are loved and when you love somebody as faithfully as you can, when you have real friends who can always understand you, a job you enjoy.
P2 - Happiness is peace. As you see, we need very much to be really happy.
P3 - Man has to overcome many difficulties and achieve many aims during his lifetime.
Teacher - “ To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield” was the slogan of our grandfathers and grand-grandfathers.
And we must not forget those who won peaceful life for us. You know that some of them had not reached even the age of fourteen in those years. They also thought about happiness, but gave their lives for victory. And how many plans for the future they had, how much hadn’t been done yet.
P4 – Yes, and in our time soldiers who are in the army are giving their duty guarding the borders of our country.
Teacher – Yes, and I must say that it is a very difficult task and duty to protect our land against enemies.
What were Alexander Matrosov, Oleg Koshevoy, Lubov Shevtsova and thousands of other young heroes thinking about giving their lives in the great struggle for the happiness of millions our people.
We are proud of the thousand-year heroic history of our ancestors, of their selfless struggle against aggressors, for a bright future for future generations.
- DISCUSSION with pupils.
How can you prepare yourselves for performing any difficult task.
P1, P2, P3…(Always perform your duties yourself, do not be afraid of difficult work, do well what you have to do, be sure that you’ll be able to do something before you begin doing it.)
- And now let us think a little and try to suggest: How can we greet our veterans? How can we show them our respect and love? Would you like to write a postcard to a veteran and wish him Health and tell him: « THANK YOU FOR THE VICTORY!»

MIKHAIL PETROVICH DEVYATAYEV.
Here is an example about an unparalleled exploit performed by a Soviet patriot and his comrades during the Great Patriotic War.
He is Hero of the Soviet Union, national hero of Mordovia (born in 1917), who during the Great Patriotic War was a fighter pilot and shot down nine fascist planes.
On July 13, 1944, in one of the air battles during the offensive of our troops in the Ukraine, Devyatayev was wounded and had to jump with parachute from his burning plane. The fascists captured him, when he was unconscious, and placed him in a concentration camp.
The fascist concentration camp was located on a small island Usedom in the Baltic Sea. The fascists had a secret air base there and used prisoners-of-war for hard work at this air base. But even in the concentration camp the Soviet patriot continued his struggle against the enemy.
Devyatayev formed a small group of Soviet prisoners-of-war and began preparations for an escape from the concentration camp. And they did it successfully.
After the war Devyatayev was captain of a ship on the Volga. When he was standing on the captain’s bridge he was often recalling those difficult and heroic days of the war. He remembered them all, from the first to the last.

THE TREACHEROUS ATTACK AND HEROIC RESISTANCE At 4 a.m. on June 22, 1941, 190 DIVISIONS OF FASCIST Germany and her satellites treacherously invaded the USSR without a declaration of war. The invasion force consisted of 5,5 million officers and men, about 4,300 tanks, 4, 950 combat aircraft, and 47, 260 guns and mortals. During the very first hours of the attack over 1,000 German bombers started bombing Soviet cities and towns. The sudden attack of the Nazis and the savage bombing of peaceful towns were intended to break the Soviet people’s will to resist. Hitler boasted that he would smash the Soviet Union in 5-6 weeks. In the first days of the war, the invaders encountered the heroic resistance of the frontier guards. The defenders of the encircled border town of Brest fiercely resisted the enemy, whose numbers exceeded those of the defenders more than tenfold, for over a month. Soviet troops fought heroically on all sectors of the front displaying mass heroism.
“ EVERYTHING FOR THE FRONT” On the very first day of the war tens of thousands of men lined up at the recruiting centres . Very young and very aged people, all made the same demand: to be sent to the front as quickly as possible. The Soviet people were deeply convinced that they would win, and did everything to expedite victory. The Soviet partisans did not give a minute’s respite to the enemy troops. They brought hope to the people in the occupied territories and inspired them with confidence in the ultimate victory of our soldiers. Over a million partisans and underground workers – people of all nations of our country – fought in the ranks of those patriotic forces.
DEFENCE OF MOSCOW The nazi leaders attached greatest importance to capturing Moscow, believing that its fall would break the Red Army’s resistance and ensure Germany’s victory in the war. The Soviet Command inflicted a crushing blow at the enemy at Moscow. Hitler’s plan of a blitzkrieg against the USSR had failed. The victory at Moscow was a turning point of world historic importance. The myth about the invincibility of nazi Germany had been destroyed.
DEFENCE OF LENINGRAD. Among the countless acts of heroism performed by the Soviet people in the war, the valiant defence of Leningrad stands out as a striking example of Soviet patriotism, as a most vivid manifestation of their fearlessness and collective heroism.
VICTORY AT STALINGRAD. During those days the defenders of Stalingrad wrote a letter to the Soviet people. It said: “We have decided to defend Stalingrad with our lives! Fighting for Stalingrad, we are defending our Motherland and everything dear to us, everything that makes life worth living. Sending the letter from the trenches we swear that we shall defend Stalingrad to our last drop of blood, to our last breath, to our last heartbeat, and we shall not let the enemy reach the Volga.” The Soviet troops kept their oath. On February 2, 1943, the Stalingrad Battle ended in a brilliant victory for the Soviet troops.
THE LIBERATION MISSION OF THE RED ARMY Some seven million Soviet soldiers participated in the liberation of European countries from June 1944 to the end of the war. As a result of the victories of our soldiers in winter and spring of 1945 the front-line moved far to the west. The Soviet troops took up positions on the Oder for an assault on Berlin. Prime-Minister of Great Britain Winston Churchill in his greeting sent on February 23, 1945, wrote: “Future generations will acknowledge their debt to the Red Army as unreservedly as do we who have lived to witness these proud achievements.”
BANNER OF VICTORY OVER BERLIN The offensive on Berlin began on April 16 and ended on May 2, 1945. For ten days violent battles shook Berlin. On April 30, at two o’ clock the Red Banner of Victory was hoisted on Reichstag by two Soviet sergeants, M. Yegorov and M. Kantaria . The Red Banner was the bright symbol of hope for all the oppressed peoples.
THE HOLIDAY WITH TEARS IN OUR EYES That day is celebrated in our country as Victory Day. It was a historic day for which hundreds of millions of people all over the world had waited. The Soviet Union had won a great victory over fascist Germany. And on June 24, a victory parade was held in Moscow in the Red Square. The victorious troops threw the banners of the routed nazi army to the foot of the Lenin Mausoleum. The war in Europe was over. And we can proudly say that the outcome of the Second World War was decided on the Soviet-German front. There the fascist aggressor sustained more than 70 per cent of its losses.
SOVIET PATRIOTISM The war brought out the full strength of Soviet patriotism as a powerful force behind the people and their army. Millions of Soviet patriots performed unparalleled acts of bravery at the front and in the rear.
