Theme: Icons of Britain and Russia.

• Good morning, children. Look at the slide. What country is it? (slide2) – Yes, you are right. It’s the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. But what helps you to understand it? (Houses of Parliament, Big Ben). Look at the next slide, read the definition and guess the word: Icons are symbolic – they represent something in one culture, history and the way of life. (slide2) So, the topic of our lesson is Icons of Britain and Russia.
• And today we are going to speak about items which best represent the country.

1. In the UK there is a special website where everyone can vote for the icons that best represent the country. Let’s listen to some British people who made their choice and give the reasons why do they find them best. (CD ex11)p 104)(slide3)

Look at the board use the cliché and say what people’s reasons are.

2. Thank you. Now, let’s revise your vocabulary. Here are the words for you to match with their translation.(slide4)  (1-f, 2-c, 3-e, 4-g, 5-h, 6-d, 7-b, 8-a)  
3. Well done. Here are a few facts and opinions about some things in Russian culture. Fill in the gaps with the words in the correct form from the box. (slide5) Take cards #1, start working. You’ve got about 4 minutes. …

4. Imagine you’ve got a chance to vote for symbols of Russia. Will you vote for the popular Russian actor Vasili Livanov. Why? Let’s listen to the story, take notes and complete the text. (slide6)Take cards #2 ( CD ex13) p 107)

Ok. Let’s check. (Since the 1890, there have been more than 260 films, 2 musicals, even ballets about the great detective Sherlock Holmes.

Hundreds of actors have played the role of Sherlock Holmes in the theatre, cinema, on the radio. 

 Vasili Livanov was recognized as the best one who played the role of Sherlock Holmes.

In 2006 Elisabeth II, Queen of the UK, awarded him the order of the British Empire for his excellent work and contribution to friendship between Russia and Britain

To many, Sherlock Holmes is part of British culture and the most typical example of an English character)

5. Now, we’ll do some role play. Look at the slide. (slide7,8) Do you recognize the sights? Name them, please: …. Well, one of you will be Russian another one – an Englishman. Look at the picture, choose the sight and discuss with each other what places to see first.  Don’t forget about the expressions of approval. You may use the cards with information. (card # 3) Tell me what you have chosen.
6. Ok, kids. Today we spoke a lot about different things in culture, history, the way of life in the UK and Russia It will help us to recognize them as unique countries with their own traditions, customs, sighs, personalities.

At the end of our lesson let’s do some quiz. I’ll give you the definition of some words. You should guess them to find the key word. The key word gives us an opportunity to identify the definite things with the definite country and will help us to summarize the lesson. Ready? Let’s start. (slide9)

OK and what is the key ward? –Yes, icons. The symbols we talked at our lesson.

And to summarize the lesson let’s do the multiple choice test about different icons and check your knowledge. Take the sits at the computers. Read the task. And if you’re ready start the test. You’ve got only 3 min.
