Derek was a clever boy, but his parents were so poor that they could hardly keep their bodies and souls together. He had to work in his spare time and during his holidays to pay for his education. In spite of this, he managed to enter the University, but he knew that it would cost more money, so after weighing all the pros and cons, he decided to moonlight and work two jobs simultaneously. This idea did not frighten him at all as earning enough money to pay for his studies was his long-life dream.
Once in summer, strolling along a street, he noticed an ad posted on the shop window that said “A butcher’s assistant WANTED”. He popped into the shop, had a word with the owner and, luckily, got the position at once. It was a day job.
Then, while waiting in a queue, he overheard that the local hospital needed male nurses and he immediately applied for the vacancy. This work at hospital was on night shift and that suited him greatly.
Derek’s work in the shop went well, as he followed the butcher’s directions in everything. Time went by and soon enough he learnt to cut meat up quite nicely. The butcher saw that the boy could handle the shop, so he did not think twice about leaving him to run the business while he went into the back room to do the accounts.
In the hospital his tasks were light and without anything serious appearing to be a matter of life and death. Frankly speaking, he was only allowed to do the simplest jobs, like helping to lift patients and carry them from one part of the hospital to another. For both Derek had to be dressed in white at the butcher’s shop and at the hospital.
One evening at the hospital, Derek was called to give a hand to carry a woman from her bed to the operating theatre.
When Derek appeared in the doorway, he noticed that the woman was trembling all over. He assumed that the thought of the forthcoming operation frightened her so much that she was in danger of collapsing. He stood waiting till the moment the woman threw a glance at him. Her expression was one of complete horror and she yelled at the top of her voice,
“No! No!” she cried. “Not my butcher! I won’t be operated on by my butcher!”
