Задание 1

Установите соответствие между заголовками 1–7 и текстами A–E. Запишите свои ответы в таблицу. Используйте каждую цифру только один раз. В задании есть один лишний заголовок.

  1. Perfect for a quiet holiday
  2. Land of nature wonders
  3. Bad for animals
  4. A visit to the zoo
  5. Perfect for an active holiday
  6. Difficult start
  1. The mountains of Scotland (we call them the Highlands) are a wild and beautiful part of Europe. A golden eagle flies over the mountains. A deer walks through the silence of the forest. Salmon and trout swim in the clean, pure water of the rivers. Some say that not only fish swim in the deep water of Loch Ness. Speak to the people living by the Loch. Each person has a story of the monster, and some have photographs.
  2. Tresco is a beautiful island with no cars, crowds or noise — just flowers, birds, long sandy beaches and the Tresco Abbey Garden. John and Wendy Pyatt welcome you to the Island Hotel, famous for delicious food, comfort and brilliant service. You
will appreciate superb accommodation, free saunas and the indoor swimming pool.
  3. The Camel and Wildlife Safari is a unique mixture of the traditional and modern. Kenya's countryside suits the Safari purposes exceptionally well. Tourists will have a chance to explore the bush country near Samburu, to travel on a camel back or
to sleep out under the stars. Modern safari vehicles are always available for those who prefer comfort.
  4. Arrival can be the hardest part of a trip. It is late, you are road-weary, and everything is new and strange. You need an affordable place to sleep, something to eat and drink, and probably a way to get around. But in general, it's a wonderful
trip, full of wonderful and unusual places. Whether it is the first stop on a trip or the fifth city visited, every traveler feels a little overwhelmed stepping onto a new street in a new city.
  5. No zoo has enough money to provide basic habitats or environments for all the species they keep. Most animals are put in a totally artificial environment, isolated from everything they would meet in their natural habitat. Many will agree that this isolation is harmful to the most of zoo inhabitants, it can even amount to cruelty.

Adam: It is OK, you're totally right, as usual! I'll change, I promise. And maybe I could apologize to Miss Yates, too...

Suzy: 6. ___________

Adam: Well,...I don't mind admitting it when I’m in the wrong!

  1. I'm afraid so. You're always messing around in the lessons, for a start. It's not on, you know.
  2. No problem. Apology accepted.
  3. Oh, that's a great idea. I think she'd really respect you for that.
  4. So you should! I'm sorry to get at you, but I feel quite strongly about this.
  5. Well, it's fine if you don't want to pay attention, but no one else can concentrate either if you're talking all the time.
  6. Yes, sometimes. And it's really unfair on Miss Yates. She is doing her best to prepare us well for exam, so the least you could do is let her teach.

  1. Travel memories
  2. Animal lover magazine
  3. Travel to stars
  4. Star dreams
  5. Popular hobby
  6. Family magazine

  1. Most people who spend a holiday travelling take a camera with them and photograph anything that interests them – sights of a city, views of mountains, lakes, waterfalls, men and women, children, ruins of ancient buildings, and even birds and animals. Later looking through their albums they will remember the happy time they have had, the islands, countries and cities they have seen.
  2. Of course, different people dream of different things. Someone wishes a calm and quiet life; others imagine their life as a never-ending adventure. The majority dream of something concrete: a villa in some warm place, an account in a Swiss bank, a splendid car... It’s interesting to know what the dreams of people who already have all this are. Celebrities, as we know, never hide their unusual hobbies, and often shock us with their extravagant behaviour.
  3. It is Junior Baseball Magazine’s mission to provide information that enhances the youth baseball experience for the entire family. The player improves his skills and is more successful. The family enjoys the activity more and shares this precious time in their life. Junior Baseball emphasizes good sportsmanship, safety, physical fitness and wholesome family values.
  4. Lots of people all over the world enjoy collecting stamps. Stamps are like little pictures. Very often they show the flowers or the trees which grow in this or that country, or they can show different kinds of transport of the country. Stamps may also have portraits of famous people on them. Some stamps show art work from the history of the country.
  5. “Friend” is the title of my favourite magazine. It consists of 70 pages, with lots of colourful and bright pictures and provides interesting and useful information for people who love animals. The magazine includes numerous articles devoted to various topics connected with domestic animals, ways to take care of them, pet food, animal health and many other topics crucial for any animal lover.

  1. When we don’t sleep
  2. Not only for humans
  3. How dreaming helps
  4. When we dream
  5. Why dreams can be scary
  6. What we feel dreaming

  1. Even though our dreams may feel like they last for hours and hours, we hardly spend more than two hours dreaming each night, which means a person spends a total of nearly six years dreaming throughout a lifetime. In general there are four phases of the sleep cycle and all dreaming occurs practically at the final phase. Each of these sleep cycles lasts approximately 60 to 90 minutes and may repeat several times throughout the night.
  2. Anxiety is the most popular emotion experienced in dreams. Many people dream of falling, which is often connected to something in our lives that is going in the wrong direction. In addition, dreams of being chased are very common and are linked to avoidance. Also people report dreams about their teeth falling out, which is related to the words and communication we might have in real life.
  3. Dreaming helps people make sense of the information and events that occur in their lives. Dreams play an important role in processing and remembering information that we absorb daily. Also, they help reduce stress and even solve problems. It’s very possible to work through real-life problems while dreaming at night. In addition, dreams provide a lot of important content and meaning that can be used to inspire and direct our lives during the day.
  4. Nearly 5 to 10% of adults have nightmares. There are several reasons for it, for example when people start taking certain medications or when they withdraw from drugs. Some physical conditions, such as stress or illness, can also be a trigger. However, in some cases adults may have frequent nightmares that are unrelated to their everyday lives, which may signify that they are more creative, sensitive, and emotional than the average person.
  5. There is no person who does not have dreams, but not everybody recalls them. The most vivid dreams happen during the Rapid Eye Movement sleep stage when the brain is extremely active and the eyes move back and forth quickly underneath the eyelids. Although dream recall varies from person to person, some people have little or no recollection of the content, and around 90% of dreams are gone following the first 10 minutes of waking up.

The (7) discovery of the island of Mauritius in 1505 was the beginning of the end for the dodo. The dodo was a large bird which was

DISCOVER

(8) incapable  of flying and so spent its entire life on the ground. When people first spotted the bird in 1598, it seemed to have no fear of humans and was quite  (9) friendly

CAPABLE

FRIEND

This was because it had always lived on an island where it had no (10)  natural enemies.

NATURE

The people on the island didn't find the dodo (11) tasty to eat, but the cats and dogs that arrived with the people did. The dodo was completely helpless and by the 1690s it had died out on the island. The story of the dodo's disappearance is just one example of man's effect on the environment.

Russia has a varied climate. Almost all of Russia (12) is situated in the North Temperature Zone.

SITUATE

The climate is continental; however, the fluctuations in temperature are (13) greater than in other European countries.

 GREAT

In May the temperature begins to rise. The gloomy night is succeeded by continuous daylight, when the sun (14) does not sink below the horizon for several months.

NOT SINK

The better part of Russia is not influenced by the warm winds of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. There are no mountains in the north to form a barrier against the cold winds (15) blowing from the Arctic Ocean.

BLOW

The extreme west of Russia has a temperate climate. Thus, the summers in the Baltic are cool and the winters mild. If we go (16)  further east, the climate will become more continental.

  1. How people used to treat them
  2. How they get their food
  3. Where they live
  4. How people start to collect their images
  5. How they confuse the scientists
  6. When they scare the people

  1. Flamingos are very social and often live in large groups, called colonies, throughout the world. They are found in both the Eastern and Western hemispheres. The American Flamingo is the only one that lives in the wild in North America, and on many Caribbean islands such as the Bahamas, Cuba, and Hispaniola. It also lives in northern South America, the Galapagos Islands, and parts of Mexico.
  2. Flamingos fish while walking in shallow water and mud. When a flamingo notices its potential dinner (for example, shrimp, snails, and plantlike water organisms), it plunges its head into the water, twists its head upside down, and scoops the fish up using its upper beak like a shovel. Flamingos get their pink coloring from the carotenoid pigment in their food, which is the same pigment that makes carrots orange.
  3. Scientists aren't 100% sure why flamingos stand on one leg, but they have some theories. One theory says that it is to keep one leg warm. Another idea is that flamingos are drying out one leg at a time. A third theory states that it helps them deceive their catch, because one leg looks more like a plant than do two. Whatever the reason, it is truly amazing that these top heavy birds can balance on one leg for hours at a time.
  4. Ancient Egyptians believed that flamingos were the living representation of the god Ra. In the Americas, the Moche people of ancient Peru worshipped nature and paid a great deal of attention to these birds and often depicted flamingos in their art. However, Andean miners killed flamingos for their fat, which is believed to be a remedy for tuberculosis, and in Ancient Rome their tongues were considered a delicacy.
  5. Many people have plastic flamingos in their yards as ornaments. This is a fun and inexpensive way to add some elegance to one's landscaping. In many parts of the world flamingos are popular collectibles, appearing in the form of magnets, water globes, and jewelry. They are also said to be an image that people find to be calming and exciting at the same time. For these purposes people buy millions of plastic flamingos annually all around the world.

  1. Why worry about trees?
  2. Choose: what goes where?
  3. Cruel business
  4. Dead or endangered
  5. A green society
  6. Don’t leave rubbish behind!

  1. How many rubbish bins do you have where you live? In our area there are about 6 of them, each bin for a different kind of rubbish. There are separate containers for glass, cans, paper, textiles, plastic bottles and food products. I'm sure it's really good because lots of things which we throw away can easily be recycled. It's time to start caring for our environment.
  2. Please, keep this place clean". This is often written on picnic sites and camping areas in forests. Do we follow the recommendation? We have fun and enjoy the views and then throw away unwanted food, glass, plastic bottles, cans, wrappers and paper. Is that your "thanks" to nature? Make your site or travel route look like nobody was there. Leave no sign of human influence.
  3. Before people started destroying the rainforests, they covered 15% of the Earth's land area. Today, they cover only 6%. In just the last 50 years, one third of the tropical rainforests have been destroyed. If people don't stop, global warming will become more severe, rare ecosystems will be destroyed, we'll breathe polluted air and the climate will be changed forever.
  4. In the first years of the 21st century there were lots of discoveries in the animal world. But in the past 10 years some animals have completely disappeared from earth. You can no longer see a golden toad, a baiji dolphin or a black rhino. It is frightening that today the process is going faster and faster. These days about 5000 animals could disappear at any time.
  5. More than 100 million animals every year suffer and die from inhuman drug, food or cosmetic tests, biology lessons, medical training exercises and other experiments. It seems that we have no pity for them. Have you ever thought that we hurt them? If there isn’t testing on people there shouldn't be testing on animals either.

  1. Why did people start the postal service?
  2. What is snail mail?
  3. Where did the first delivery system appear?
  4. What are the advantages of e-mail?
  5. What was the first stamp like?
  6. How were the letters paid for?
  1. For as long as humans have existed there has been a need to keep in touch and to transfer important information between people in different places. Before the invention of writing, oral messages were carried from one person to another between towns. Writing made it much easier to send longer messages; however, it was still difficult to make sure that your message got to the right place.
  2. It was used by the Roman officials to transfer information throughout the Empire. Staging posts and a system with horses and carriages meant that messages could move quickly, by using many riders instead of one. It was very important for business and military reasons that good communication system existed. However, the Romans were not the first to realize this. The Chinese and Persian empires used systems of horses and riders more than 500 years before the Romans.
  3. Before the invention of the postage stamps, letters were “franked”. It was marked on the letter that delivery had been paid for. This could have been either written or stamped. A post-mark was also stamped on the letter. Invented in 1660 in England, this was a mark that showed where and when the letter had been posted. It was used to see how long it took to deliver the letter – to make sure the service was reliable.
  4. It is the humorous term used by e-mail users for the old-fashioned letters-in-envelopes postal system. It means that such letters travel very slowly, which actually is rather unfair. In Britain you can send letters first or second class; the first class ones normally get to their destination, anywhere in the country, the next morning. The postal service is called the Royal mail, and all the British stamps have the head of the Queen.
  5. They were invented in Great Britain. It was a British man called Rowland Hill who proposed a stamp to be stuck on the letter to identify that postage had been paid. The first stamp was issued in 1840. It was called the Penny Black and the profile of Queen Victoria’s head was depicted there. The stamp cost 1 pence and was darkly coloured. About 65 million Penny Blacks were issued, and nowadays it is not a very rare stamp.

 DESTROY

“Recently, they (10) have become aggressive to other birds, pets and even people.”

 BECOME

Councillor Jack Groom said the time for talk was over, adding that it was time for action before (11)  more people were hurt by the gulls.

          Monet’s Garden

Monet’s Garden (12) was created in 1883 in the Valley of the River Epte by Claude Monet, the leader of the Impressionist painters. Monet liked (13) painting a subject in the open air and planned that his future garden would inspire artists and photographers.

With the support of the local authorities, Monet had a small pond dug, even though his peasant neighbours (14) did not like it.

They were afraid that his strange plants (15) would poison the water. Near the pond, there is a water-garden with its famous willows and water-lilies, which still appear to await the eye of the master for a final canvas.

This wonderful play of light and shadow inspired (16) him  for the immortal paintings.
