Elie Wiesel , Nobel Peace Prize winner and Holocaust survivor, u sed the term Holocaust for the first time as a symbol of gas chambers /ˈ tʃeɪmbəz /, crematoriums /ˌ kreməˈtɔːriəmz / and extermination / ɪkˌstɜːmɪˈneɪʃən / camps. Now this term is used for museums and memorials
In times of crisis, Jews and other minorities have always been at risk. In such times, many people are attracted to simple answers to complex problems. They often place the blame for the crisis on the "other” in the society. Antisemitism rose in nearly every nation in Europe and in America during those crises .
During the Second World War Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Germany wanted to destroy all the Jews of Europe. By 1939, about half of all German Jews had left the country. Once the war began, emigration was no longer possible and it was then that the Germans turned to murder.
For the first time in history, industrial methods were used for the mass extermination of a whole people. Six million J ews were murdered, including 1,500,000 children – that is a round two-thirds of the Jewish community in Europe . This is called the Holocaust.
The Nazis murdered millions of others as well - Gypsies, Poles and other Slavic groups, people with physical and mental disabilities, incurably sick , homosexuals Soviet prisoners of war, political opponents, and others. 17 million victims
Starting in 1933, the Nazis built a network of concentration and extermination camps in Germany . Over 42,000 camps and ghettos were established .
D eadly pogroms took place
Death or Firing Squads shot lots of civilians
The SS's medical experiments on camp inmates were another crime. Twenty-three senior physicians and other medical personnel were charged a t Nuremberg 9 December 1946 – 20 August 1947 with crimes against humanity . They included the head of the German Red Cross , professors , clinic directors , and biomedical researchers . At least 7000 prisoners suffered from these experiments ; most died during them or afterwards
