History Columbia University was founded in 1754 as King's College by royal charter of King George II of England. It is the oldest institution of higher learning in the state of New York and the fifth oldest in the United States For more than 250 years, Columbia has been a leader in higher education in the nation and around the world. After the revolutionary war , King's College briefly became a state entity, and was renamed Columbia College in 1784. A 1787 charter placed the institution under a private board of trustees before it was renamed Columbia University in 1896 when the campus was moved from Madison Avenue to its current location in Morningside Heights occupying land of 32 acres (13 ha).

Alma Mater is a sculpture of the goddess Athena by Daniel Chester French which is located on the steps leading to the Low Memorial Library on the Morningside Heights . Sculpted in 1903 and installed in 1904, it was donated in memory of alumnus Robert Goelet . Alma Mater The statue has become a symbol of the university. An owl is hidden in the folds of Alma Mater' s cloak near her left leg, a symbol of knowledge and learning, and college superstition has it that the first member of the incoming class to find the owl will become class valedictorian . The legend at another time was that any Columbia student who found the owl on his first try would marry a girl from Barnard .
