Saratov is a big industrial, cultural and educational centre. Saratov is one of the oldest towns in the Volga Region. Saratov is the capital of the Volga region. It was founded in 1590 as a fortress on the boarders of Russia. The origin of its name is Tartar. It means “A yellow or a beautiful hill”.

Saratov bridge across the Volga. It is one of the biggest in Europe. It connects Saratov on the right bank of the Volga with the city of Engels on the left bank.

The Radischev Art Gallery. It is one of the largest museums in our country. It has the richest collections of paintings, graphic arts, sculptures, old furniture. The museum was built in 1885.

There are many institutions of high education in the city: the State University, the Technical University, the Academy of Law, the Academy of Economics, the Agricultural University, the Medical University and the Conservatory.

The conservatory in Saratov was founded in 1912 and was the first provincial conservatory to be founded in Russia, after St. Petersburg Conservatory and Moscow Conservatory. The main building of the conservatory had been built in 1902. The Conservatory is located in the center of the city and is housed in a beautiful gothic-styled building that has become the label of the city of Saratov.

Victory Park. It is a memorial complex. The park was founded in 1975 in honor of the 30-year anniversary of victory. The most famous object of this memorial is a monument “Cranes”. Also you can see exhibits of great patriotic war (a sanitary train and a gunboat.

The first circus was founded in Saratov in 1876. It was a wooden construction. In the early 1960s it moved to a new building. Many masters of this art were brought up within its walls. Famous circus persons began their artistic careers in its arena. Nowadays it is one of the famous Russian circuses providing unique technical effects and modern light and sound equipment.
