Урока

Good morning, boys and girls! I`m glad to see you! Sit down and let`s start our lesson. The topic of our lesson is «Sightseeing in London» and the aim is to check your knowledge about London`s places of interest.

And now I want you to imagine such a situation: everyone of you returned from London yesterday. You`ve been there for three days, got acquainted with Englishmen and saw a lot of sights of London.

Did you enjoy your journey?

What places have you seen?

Are you sure you know and remember a lot about London?

Let`s check it up.

Give names to these pictures

And now give me more information about everything you`ve seen. Let`s work in pairs. Please, come to me, take one card with a question and discuss it with your partner. So

2  Where did most of the English Kings and Queens have their coronation ceremonies?

3 What is the official name of the parliament building?

4  Where are famous people of Great Britain buried?

5  What was the Tower of London in the past and what is it now?

6 What is there in the centre of Trafalgar Square?

And now let`s listen to a dialogue. It is about some friends who came to London for an excursion as you did. There are some new words for you there. Let`s read them.

Please listen to a dialogue and be ready to answer the question: What are сhildren going to see in London?

So, what are they going to see in London?

Open your books at page 157, look through exercise number 2. Choose the correct answer.

I`ll give cards with different sights of London. Your task is to choose places which were not mentioned in the conversation.

I think that you`re tired a bit. Let`s have a rest for a moment. Stand up, please, and repeat after me.

Stamp your feet upon the ground

Clap hands, and then sit down.

I`ve got information for you: one of the pupils from our school is going to visit London next week, but she has a problem: she has only one day to go sightseeing. Let`s help her and make a route for her.

I`ll divide you into two teams you`ll have to do your own  route. Then we`ll discuss what is really necessary to visit.

You have 9 cards, choose 5 of them. Then one pupil from each team will go to the blackboard and strengthen your route to the blackboard.

You have enough knowledge about London sights but do you know some historical facts about the capital of Great Britain? Read the text and say what happened to London in 1666.

When was the fire of London?

When did it begin?

How long did the fire last?

How many houses were destroyed?

We spoke a lot about London today. I hope you learnt a lot and got some new information and in order to check yourselves, to find out how attentive you were during this lesson and how much knowledge you`ve got I propose you to write down some exercises.

The Great Fire of London

The summer of 1666 was very hot and dry in London. On Sunday in September a great  fire broke out in the city. It began late at night in a street not far from London Bridge. The Monument now stands on the spot to remind people of the terrible flames.

A hot east wind was blowing and the fire spread quickly. Most of the houses in London were made of wood. The better houses had brick or stone foundations only. The fire burnt for five days and nothing could stop it. There were no fire brigades at that time. The flames made night as light as day for ten miles around London. The people left their burning houses and went to the fields across the Thames. They put up tents and lived there.

Thirteen thousand houses were destroyed and many people were left homeless. London was completely destroyed.
