Dear girls and boys, thank you for coming here today. Today we’ve got together to take part in the competition devoted to St. Valentine’s day.
As you know, this day is usually celebrated in all English speaking countries.
We are going to talk about English songs and poetry! You’ll have 3 activities to get points. So let’s get ready to do them right!
1. (5 min) The first one is listening and filing the gasps.
While listening, you should write down the missing words in the lyrics. You’ll hear the song twice. (7 points max)
The song is called «What makes you beautiful» by one-direction (1:11 min).
You're insecure, don't know what for
You're turning heads when you walk through the door
Don't need make up to cover up
Being the way that you are is enough
Everyone else in the room can see it
Everyone else but you
Baby you light up my world like nobody else
The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed
But when you smile at the ground it ain't hard to tell
You don't know, oh oh
You don't know you're beautiful
If only you saw what I can see
You'll understand why I want you so desperately
Right now I'm looking at you and I can't believe
You don't know, oh oh
You don't know you're beautiful, oh oh
That's what makes you beautiful
Let’s check if you’ve done it correctly. Please, pass us the paper with your answers.
2. (6 min)The next activity is Listening and translating the verse called «A Red, Red Rose» by Robert Burns.
Now look at the active board and listen. (Video - A Red, Red Rose by Robert Burns - Poetry Reading lasts (1:13)
You may start translating the verse. You’ ll have 5 min.
My love is like a red, red rose
That’s newly sprung in June :
My love is like the melody
That’s sweetly played in tune.
As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,
So deep in love am I :
And I will love thee still, my dear,
Till a’ the seas gang dry.
Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi’ the sun :
And I will love thee still, my dear,
While the sands o’ life shall run.
And fare thee weel, my only love,
And fare thee weel a while !
And I will come again, my love,
Thou’ it were ten thousand mile.
3. The last activity for you to get points is matching pictures of the English writers with its names and dates. You may start matching. (4 min)
