    Reading

Every year a lot of young people from all over the world come to the USA as international students. If you choose the USA for studying, making the most of your visit requires some knowledge of the country. Here are 5 extracts from a brochure about international students in the United States.

1 . Read the information, choose the best sentence to summarise each extract and write the appropriate letter by the numbers. (There is one extra sentence, which does NOT fit in any of the extracts.) (matching)

    1.  ____ American teachers are not alike in their teaching styles.
    2.  ____ The US Government varies in format but allows democracy.
    3.  ____ There are many international students at colleges and universities in the United States.
    4.  ____ Engineering is the most popular field of study for international students.
    5.  ____ At most American colleges and universities, facilities for learning are available for students.
    6.  ____ The visitors admit regional variety of America.

            A.   So you are a newcomer to the USA? What will strike you most in your first visit to the USA? First, the size and diversity of the land itself. The United States covers the central part of the North American continent from the Pacific Ocean in the West to the Atlantic Ocean in the East. It is geographically the fourth largest nation in the world. People live within four time zones and practically every climate in the world is presented. Extensive deserts are found  in  the Southcentral  and  Southwest areas,  and mountain ranges run from north to south. Rainfall varies widely with season and area.

            B.   The United States of America is a federal republic of 50 states. The Constitution of 1787 established the basic political framework, which still exists. The legislature consists of the Senate with two representatives from each state and a House of Representatives with representation based upon population. Presidential elections occur every four years. Each state has its own constitution and government and exercises considerable autonomy in internal self-government. The political system is stable, with two primary political parties. The legislative, executive, and judicial branches of the government maintain the 'checks and balances' in American democratic law.

            C.   California is the state with the most international students. Texas and New York are the next. Other states with large numbers of international students are Massachusetts, Illinois, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. Students from Europe most often go to school in the northeastern or northwestern and western states, and students from Asia usually go to school in the mid-western and western states. Latin Americans most often study in the South and Southwest, and Africans usually attend schools, colleges and universities in the Midwest and South.

            D.   Instructors at American colleges and universities use different teaching methods. Some instructors give assignments every day and grade the homework. In their classes, students have to take many quizzes, a midterm exam, and a final exam. Other instructors give only writing assignments. Some teachers use textbooks. Other teachers send students to the library for assignments.  The atmosphere in some classrooms is very formal. Students call their instructors 'Professor Johnson',  'Mrs. Jones'. Some teachers wear business clothes and give lectures. Other classrooms have an informal atmosphere. Students and teachers discuss their ideas. Instructors dress informally, and students call them by their first names.

    E.   Students can often use typewriters, tape recorders, video, and computers at libraries and learning centers. They can buy books, textbooks, and other supplies at college stores. They can get advice on their problems from instructors and individual help with their classes from tutors. Some schools have swimming pools and tennis courts. Most have snack bars or cafeterias.
