A Voyage up the Volga.
Thousands of tourists travel up and down the Volga every year. It’s Europe’s longest river and many consider it to be the national river of Russia, but what can one to see there?
We began our journey in the historic city of Volgograd with an inspirational trip to Mamayev Kurgan to see the enormous statue, The Motherland calls. This city witnessed the full horror and heroism of World War II.
Over the next few days the boat stopped at many small villages, and we sailed past Saratov, Samara and Simbirsk. In every village there were small shops and street vendors selling clothes, matryoshka dolls and amber jewellery. It was a great chance to see rural life in Russia, and the people we met were incredibly hospitable.
The third day of our trip brought us to Kazan, where the Volga meets the Kazanka River. Kazan is half Russian, half Tatar and completely charming. In the upper part of the city, we visited the Kazan Kremlin, where we saw the amazing Annunciation Cathedral and the mysterious leaning Soyembika Tower.
As the river carried us further, Nizhny Novgorod came into view, standing on a high hill where the Volga meets the Oka River. The red bricks towers of the grand Kremlin dominate the skyline and the Archangel Cathedral lies within its historical walls. From there we visited many of the city’s famous abbeys, such as the Monastery of the Caves and the Annunciation Monastery.
We sailed to Kostroma- a city that’s almost as old as Moscow. We saw the medieval peasant homes and the golden domes of the Ipatiev Monastery. The Epiphany Cathedral, with the 10th century Byzantine icon, Our Lady of St Theodore, was also truly remarkable.
Finally, our voyage brought us to Yaroslavl. We saw the 17th century red brick churches with fantastic frescos. At the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery we saw many wonderful religious icons as well as the original manuscript of the Russian literary treasure, The Lay of Igor’s Host.
All too soon it was time to leave but we knew that we had taken a journey that would live in our hearts forever.

Hope for the Future of Pandas.
Giant pandas, found only in China, are one of the world’s most endangered species. There are only about 1600 left in the wild and another 200 in captivity. The female panda has an average of only about 7 cubs (baby pandas) in her lifetime. This is why it is extremely important that we protect these beautiful animals.
In April 2006, a four-year-old male panda called Xiang Xiang was released into the wild. He was the first panda born in captivity to be set free. This was more than 40 years after the birth of the first giant panda in captivity. Xiang Xiang, whose name means “lucky”, has a radio collar so scientists can follow his movements. When released, he barked like an angry dog and ran towards photographers before heading into the forest!
Xiang Xiang began training to be a wild panda from the age of two. He was raised at the Panda Centre in the Wolong Nature Reserve where more than a hundred pandas live (more than half of the pandas in captivity!). Xiang Xiang’s habitat training began in a five acre open space. He later went to a much larger area that was more like a natural panda habitat. There, Xiang Xiang learned to build a place to live and to eat bamboo. He started to be aggressive towards humans and make noises like a wild panda. Also, his health improved and he began to have more energy.
The area around the Wolong Nature Reserve is the largest giant panda habitat in the world. Scientists will work out how many more pandas can live in this area, then they will release that number into the wild. Xiang Xiang was released into the western end of the Wolong Nature Reserve. There, he may meet other pandas. The plan is to double the number of pandas in the wild by releasing around 15 each year.
The Chinese government has decided to protect 28 natural areas. They have also set up centers like the Chengdu Research Base. This research base started with six pandas whose habitat had been destroyed. Today it has 33 and they plan to reintroduce some of them to the wild in the future.
It is important to breed pandas and to release them into the wild. However, protecting their habitat is the most important step. This is the only way to make sure they survive.

Lake Baikal.
Between the Yenisei and Lena and north of the Sayan highlands, the mineral-rich economic region of Eastern Siberia is situated. It includes Lake Baikal and the republics of Buryatia and Sakha. Buryatia lies around the eastern and northern shores of Lake Baikal and borders on Mongolia.
Lake Baikal, in eastern Siberia, is a miracle of nature. It’s the deepest lake on Earth and it contains more water than all the Great Lakes of America put together. It’s also the oldest lake on Earth and, after more than 25 million years, Lake Baikal is still growing at a rate of 2 cm a year. However, facts and figures fail to describe the breathtaking beauty of Baikal. The water is crystal clear, and when you can see the shimmering stones on the bottom of the lake it’s hard to believe they are so deep down. As the lake changes its mood, the wind rises and huge waves begin to roll across the surface.
Lake Baikal is surrounded by some magnificent ranges. More than 300 rivers flow into Lake Baikal and only one river, the Angara, flows outwards. Of the 22 islands in the lake, the most famous is Olkhon Island, where they say the sun shines brightly for more than 300 days a year. Olkhon is a place of legend and wild spirits, and it’s home to the famous Shamanka, where shamans used to live in times gone by.
This environmental treasure also contains a wealth of biodiversity. Most of the 2,635 species of animals and plants discovered in and around Lake Baikal cannot be found anywhere else in the world. The lake is also the only breeding ground for the Baikal Seal and the Omul Fish, on which they feed. In 1996, Baikal was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The total area of the site is 8,8 million hectares, which includes the lake’s surface, three reserves, and two national parks, Pribaikalsky and Tunkinsky.
Today, this precious Russian jewel is threatened by the industry around its shores. We can only hope that future generations will be able to come here and enjoy Lake Baikal as much as we do.

Boston, Massachusetts.
Boston is the 5th largest city in the United States. Only New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston are larger. It is located on the Atlantic Ocean. Boston has always been an important port. The Charles River runs along the north side of the city and separates Boston from another well known city, Cambridge.
Boston is the capital of Massachusetts.
If you like sports, you will love Boston. It is home of basketball, baseball and ice-hockey teams. Also, the oldest running race in the United States, the Boston Marathon, is held in Boston each April.
Boston is also home of one of the best Symphonies in the United States- the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The Boston Ballet is also very good.
Some of the best known universities are located in Boston. The oldest university in the United States, Harvard University, was founded in 1636. It is located in Cambridge, just across the Charles River from Boston. There is also Boston University, Boston College and many others.
Boston has many nice parks. The Public Garden has a pond where you can ride on boats in the shape of swans.
Boston is one of America’s oldest cities. It was founded in 1630.
Boston was one of the key cities in the years before and during the Revolutionary War. In 1773, to protest a new set of taxes on tea, a group of Americans dressed up like Indians, climbed abroad a ship full of tea and threw it all overboard into Boston Harbor. This was known as the Boston Tea Party.
You can see many historical sites by following the Freedom Trail. The Freedom Trail is marked by a red brick line that runs through the city streets of Boston connecting 16 historic sites.
Boston has been the final home of many immigrants to the United States. In the 19th and 20th centuries, many Italian and Irish immigrants moved to Boston. Every year, South Boston hosts the St.Patrick’s Day parade. Today, many other nationalities from such places as Asia, South America and Eastern Europe are also represented in Boston.

Oxbridge.
For seven hundred years two universities dominated British education, and today they dominate more than ever. Oxford and Cambridge preserve an antique way of life in the midst of twentieth century. Oxford and Cambridge have always provided a large number of prominent secretaries (Whitehall civil servants), members of Parliament, and of the vice-chancellors of other universities.
The students of Oxbridge make up one of the most elite elites in the world. Less than one per cent of Britain’s population go to Oxbridge. B.A. (Oxford) or B.A. (Cambridge) is quite different from an ordinary B.A.
Oxbridge is only in session half the year, and the universities adjourn for four month in the summer- a relic from medieval times, when scholars had to bring in the harvest.
Only since the 1870s have women been admitted, and the women’s colleges constitute only 12 per cent of the Oxbridge population, so that the competition to reach them is fierce: only a small per cent of the candidates are chosen- mainly on the results of the written examination.
Oxbridge and Redbrick differ greatly. It is absurd that four fifth of the undergraduates should be made to feel that they are inferior for life. In the civil service, politics and law there has been no visible breach in the supremacy of Oxbridge graduates. The division is essentially a class one. While a large per cent of Oxbridge undergraduates come from public schools, very few of Redbrick do: many public school boys would rather go straight into business, into the services of a foreign universities, than go to a Redbrick university: they prefer no degree to a Redbrick degree.
In England Redbrick has been separated from the beginning. When Oxford and Cambridge were exclusively Anglican, the new Victorian universities were built to provide a liberal education for the poorer boys and dissenters of the provinces and to give technological training. They grew up outside the old aristocratic pattern. Oxford and Cambridge undergraduates scorned them.

Rainbow of Food.
Red foods get you moving. They give you that extra boost when you really need it the most. What’s more, eating foods in this group will protect you from many serious illnesses and can keep older people active for longer. So, have you got a big game tonight? Is it your turn to do the gardening? Then go ahead and treat yourself to one or even two of your favourite red foods.
Orange foods are brain food. They help you keep your mind on things and really improve your powers of concentration. On the physical side, foods like mangoes, oranges and peaches have lots of vitamin C. This is important because that’s the vitamin that helps your body fight off infections. As everyone knows, carrots are also fantastic for your eyesight.
Yellow foods are nature’s way of helping us to stay happy. They make you more optimistic. Imagine that you’re feeling a bit down in the dumps. Eat a banana and you’ll feel better. Eat a couple of slices of pineapple and you’ll feel a smile coming on and by the time you finish your tall glass of lemonade, you’ll be grinning from ear to ear! What could be easier? Enjoying yellow foods is better for you, emotionally, than hearing the best jokes in the world.
Broccoli, lettuce and cucumbers are all green foods. These foods are great when you want to relax, calm yourself down or keep your emotions under control. Green foods are good for you because they contain vitamins and minerals that keep your teeth and bones strong and healthy, so next time your mum tells you to eat your peas don’t complain, just do it. Remember, mums always know what’s best for you, no matter how old you are!
You’ve had a hard day and now you just want to flop in front of the TV for a bit before you go to bed. The best thing at this time of the day is something blue. Blue foods are soothing, both emotionally and physically, and prepare you for a good night’s rest. Say goodnight with a delicious bowl of blueberries or a handful of tasty raisins.
Shakespeare, Da Vinci and Picasso must have all been fans of purple foods. This is because fruits and vegetables like figs, prunes and beetroot make people more creative. If that isn’t a good enough reason to eat them, than think about this … purple foods can keep you looking young! Imagine being eighty years old, but looking as if you’re forty and just about to finish writing your second best-selling novel. Bring on the purple foods!

The Pyramids of Egypt.
Since ancient times, the pyramids at Giza in Egypt have been one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations. The largest of these, the Great Pyramid of Giza, is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World that still survives today. It was the tallest building in the world for almost 5,000 years- that is, until the Eiffel Tower was built in 1889.
Pharaohs, the first rulers of Egypt, built pyramids to show their power to the people. The first Pharaohs build much simpler tombs called mastabas Ancient Egyptians believed that dead people still needed their bodies and treasures, such as paintings, gold and jewels, for their life and death.
Many of the pyramids were decorated inside, especially in the room where the dead pharaoh was laid. Archaeologists discovered many pictures in the tombs and mysterious writings on the walls. They were just simple drawings of everyday things we see and hear. The Egyptians believed that the tomb pictures were magical, which is why they painted them inside the pyramids. Many archaeologists believe that the builders first studied the stars to decide which direction the pyramid would face, as Egyptians believed the pharaohs would join the stars after death.
The city of Giza is on the River Nile. The Nile was also very important in the building of the pyramids as it was used to transport the stones from far away.
Just to give you an idea of how large the Great Pyramid is- it is the height of a modern 40-storey building, or over 145 meters. It covers an area of land the size of seven city streets. It took about 36,000 workers (mostly slaves and farmers) between 20 and 30 years to build it. This means that for every minute they worked, they added three blocks to the pyramid, each weighing 2.5 tons.
In conclusion, there is still a great deal of wonder and mystery surrounding the pyramids. No one knows for certain exactly when and how they were built. So far 46 of them have been found in Egypt. However, maybe there are others lying underneath the sand just waiting to be discovered.

Types of schools.
There are many types of schools in the world. Some are expensive, private boarding schools, like Rugby School in England where the game of rugby was invented! There are also some specialist schools, like drama schools, dance schools or acrobatic schools in China. It might sound like fun, but, as 13-year-old Zhang Li explains, “Our training starts at 5:30 am. It’s very hard, but these skills will help me when I leave.” There are also a wide range of school subjects at different schools. At Holden High School in the USA, subjects include comic book art, photography, song writing and yoga. At a school in the Annapurna mountains in Nepal, classes don’t start until 10 am because a lot of students have to walk for about an hour to get there. In Japan, it isn’t unusual for students to spend two hours or more getting to school on public transport. “It’s not so bad,” says 15-year-old Keiko from Tokyo. “I sometimes sleep or study on the train, and it’s a great way to catch up with my friends.”
The average school day in the UK and the US is 6.5 hours for high schools students. Students in Korea and Greece, however, are not so lucky! After school they attend extra classes in private schools. “On a typical day,” says Jie Kim from Seoul, South Korea, “I don’t get home until midnight, but if I don’t study hard, I won’t go into a good university.”
All schools have rules, but sometimes they are really strict. At Eton College, a very famous boys’ boarding school in England, the students have a smart but very old-fashioned uniform with a long jacket, trousers and a shirt. In Japan, everyone has to participate in cleaning of the school before they go home, whereas at Summerhill School in England, it’s the students who make the rules!
So, is your school better or worse than schools in other parts of other parts of the world? No matter what your answer is, we shouldn’t forget that 300 million children in the world don’t have any schools to go to. So even if you’d like to change some things about your school, you really are one of the lucky ones!

The Weather.
Do you know what thunder or lightning are? Lightning is a big spark of electricity that travels from the sky down to the earth. Thunder is a big noise you hear after you see lightning in the sky. Have you ever heard the expression, “Lightning never strikes the same place twice”? Well, it’s not exactly true. A man named Roy Sullivan was struck by lightning seven times in 25 years. Many people die the first time they are struck by lightning. More than 200 people are killed by lightning in the United States every year.
Do you know what the weather will be like tomorrow?
The weather is an important part of our lives. It can change what we do and how we feel. Therefore, we often need to know what the weather will be like. Meteorologists are scientists who study the weather 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They try to predict, or forecast the weather.
How do meteorologists know what the weather will be like tomorrow or next week? Many years ago meteorologist tried to forecast the weather by looking at it. This did not work very well, because weather moves very quickly. Soon meteorologists began drawing maps of the way weather moves. Meteorologists can see a picture of the weather for large areas on a map. Winter snow storms can be 1,000 miles wide! You can only see storms this big on a map.
Until recently it was difficult to make weather maps, because meteorologists couldn’t get weather reports from all over the country or world fast enough. But today it is not difficult to get these reports quickly, because the whole world works together to make weather maps. There are now weather forecast stations in many places in the world. Meteorologists can send weather reports from one country to another in seconds! Weather satellites, airplanes, ships and balloons help meteorologists. Computers are also used to put storms, temperature and wind direction on the maps, so meteorologists do not have to draw the maps by hand.

Thanksgiving Day.
There is one day a year when all Americans stay home with their families and eat a big dinner. This is Thanksgiving Day. The pilgrims celebrated the first Thanksgiving Day in the fall of 1621. The pilgrims sailed to America from Plymouth, England, in September,1620. They came to America for religious freedom. They were among the first European settlers in America. The name of their ship was the “Mayflower”. They landed at Plymouth Rock, in what is now the state of Massachusetts in December, 1620.
“At first, the passengers enjoyed good weather at sea. But soon, strong winds and fierce storms developed. Our ship, the “Mayflower”, began to shake and leak. Finally, one of the main beams broke. Some of the passengers and sailors were afraid the ship could not cross the ocean. They wanted to return to England. But others felt confident. “If we do not use all the sails, and if we repair the main beam, we will not sink,” they promised. So everyone put his trust in God, and they all decided to continue. After a long struggle with the sea, the “Mayflower” came to land. What a joy the pilgrims had when they realized where they were!”
They were people living in America before the pilgrims arrived. These people were the Native American Indians. The Indians began settling in America about 25,000 years ago. They hunted, fished, and farmed to survive. There were many groups, or tribes, and each had its own customs and beliefs.
The pilgrims’ first winter in the New World was difficult. They had arrived too late to grow many crops. Without fresh food, half of the pilgrims died. The following spring the Indians taught the pilgrims how to hunt, fish, plant, and survive in America. The crops did well, and in the fall of 1621 the pilgrims had a great harvest. They were thankful and decided to celebrate with a Thanksgiving feast. They prepared a dinner of turkey, corn, beans and pumpkins. They invited their Indian friends to share this feast.

English in my Life.
My name is Olga. I am more than 80 years old. I would like to tell you about the great role that English has played in my life.
In the early 1920s, I happened to come across an English book of stories published in a strange way. The first line was written in English, the second line gave the pronunciation in Russian letters and the third line gave the translation into Russians. It was really fun to read and soon I began to understand simple phrases without looking at the translation and I even learned many of the phrases by heart.
The results of this language game were very successful. At age of 15, I started working as a cashier at the hotel “Europe” in a seaport, Novorossiysk. At the same time, I was asked to teach elementary English to the crew of an oil-tanker, which was going to England. So, my first English class consisted of a group of lively seamen enjoying their short rest at the sea shore. After some time, they learned about 20 useful sentences and were sure they knew English well.
After this interesting experience, I decided to become a teacher. I began studying in Leningrad. Then, in 1940, I graduated from Moscow Institute of Foreign Languages. Since that time, I have been teaching, teaching and teaching English to schoolchildren, writers, composers, scientists and even the stuff of the Ministry of Foreign Trade during World War II.
In the 1960s and 1970s, because of my knowledge of English, I was able to work as an interpreter with different delegations of peace activists from many countries. I interpreted for well-known people from Moscow and all over the country. Believe me that even now after 30 years of fruitful work, many of these people still send me letters and would like to meet again.
English is becoming a global language. Problems of the 21st century cannot be solved if people do not speak the same language. So, dear boys and girls don’t waste time. Go on studying English each and every day.

Learning English the Easy Way
Learning English is not as difficult as many students think. If you want to make rapid progress you should concentrate on building your “word power” first and on learning grammar second. To build up your “word power” you will have to learn at least ten new words a day. And don’t put off starting until next week. Start today, with the new words in this text, using a vocabulary notebook. Write the English words on one side of the page and the words in your language on the other. But don’t just write down the words-you must spend at least ten minutes a day learning them!
The best way to do this is to start with the words in your own language and work backwards: cover the English words with a piece of paper and try to remember them by looking at the word in your language. When you have remembered, or “guessed” the English word, move your piece of paper down to see if you were right-or lucky. When you have found ten words that you have difficulty in learning, write them down-with the words in your own language-on a separate piece of paper and spend ten minutes learning them by heart. Keep your “learning lists” but cross out the words in your notebook when you are sure you know them. Then you needn’t check them again. Keep working on the words you don’t know-don’t waste time checking the words you already know.
Knowing your grammar is, of course, important. The rules of English grammar are (fairly) simple and not as complicated as those of other living languages (not to mention dead ones like Latin or Greek). So concentrate on learning vocabulary-you can’t use your grammar without knowing a lot of words!
Every day read a few pages of easy English texts and retell what you read aloud. Listen to any spoken English on television, radio, records or cassettes. Play any English games. Create crossword puzzles. Work with a friend and test each other’s abilities. This way you’ll improve your English skills.

A Rich Aunt.
Henry Smith belonged to a good family. His father never forgot to mention the fact. Unfortunately Henry had some troubles with the bank and had to go to Australia. To be there was a torture for a young man, so he was eager to return to England. However, he couldn’t earn enough money to buy a ticket. When his father and brother died, Henry was glad to receive all the family money and return to England. Soon there was no money left. Henry was surprised to have spent the money so quickly, but there was nothing to do. He had two choices- to die or to work. He did not want to do any of that. Then he remembered that he had a rich aunt.
Henry found her, but the woman was seriously ill and the doctor said it was impossible to cure her. Henry did not want to be left in the hard world alone, so one day when his aunt was feeling better than usual he asked her about her will.
The old woman told her nephew that she had written a will long ago when she was a young girl. She was very religious and wanted all her money to go to some religious people in China.
The next day Henry went to the lawyer. He found out that according to the law if his aunt had ever been married, her previous will had lost its value and if there were no new will after her death, all her money were to go to her nearest relative, in other words to him. His aunt probably did not know about it, so Henry thought his future to be safe.
One day the old lady told Henry to send for her lawyer. She was planning to make a new will. Henry was afraid that his aunt wanted to leave all her money to somebody else. So it was time to act. Henry knew that every night his aunt took some medicine to make her sleep. Henry decided to double the portion. He wanted to put her to sleep forever.
The aunt took the glass and said:”If I manage to wake up tomorrow, I shall change my will in your favour.” She explained to him that she had never been married, so her first will had not lost her value.

Environment.
Every year a lot of people around the globe get more and more environmentally concerned. First of all we pay attention that we drink dirty water contaminated by poisonous chemicals, and it harms our health. Then we notice how acid rains damage our hair and it starts going out. The layer of ozone does not protect the earth from harmful radiation any more, as there is a lot of growing ozone holes. Sun radiation causes cancer. Animals die out, because they are killed by men and poisonous environment.
It is very important for everybody to understand that it is our responsibility to preserve the nature and help the earth to survive. I have a lot of friends who are very environmentally aware.
My friend Kate is a vegetarian. She does not eat meat, because she is against bad conditions the animals are kept in. Kate never uses any products without a special label “not tested on animals” or “against animal testing”. She thinks it is unfair that animals should die for the sake of creating a better lipstick or shampoo for people. Naturally Kate does not wear any fur and is trying to avoid wearing leather boots as much as he can.
My other friend Michael is very careful about the way he disposes of trash. He sorts his rubbish carefully and firstly divides it into organic and non-organic. Then he looks at non-organic things, which are glass bottles, tin cans, aluminiums and plastic containers. He washes them carefully and then takes each of them to a special container, so it can be recycled.
Pete is strongly against cars. He is probably too radical, but he has his point when he says that cars are big air polluters and people should not have as many cars as they do at the moment.
I respect my friend’ views very much and though I am not that good yet, I am improving and start noticing things. Now I understand that what we do now will preserve the world for our children.

Romeo and Juliet.
In the town of Verona, in Italy there were two families. There was an old quarrel between them. There was a daughter, Juliet, in the Capulet family and a son, Romeo, in the Montague family.
One day old Capulet made a great supper. Romeo and his friends went there. The young men wore masks on their faces.
When dancing began, Romeo saw a young and beautiful girl. This was Juliet and Romeo fell in love with her. He came up to the girl and began to speak to her, but Juliet’s cousin, Tybald, recognized Romeo and wanted to fight with him. The fight did not take place because old Capulet did not give Tybald his permission, but Romeo had to leave the house.
He did not go home, he went into Capulets’ garden. Juliet could not sleep that night, she fell in love with Romeo too. She went up to the window and from there saw Romeo in the garden. They talked about their love and about the quarrel between their families.
The next day Friar Lawrence married Romeo and Juliet. Juliet went home to wait for her young husband. Romeo went into the town and met his friend Mercutio. In one of the streets they saw Tybald. Romeo did not want to fight, but Tybald attacked Mercutio and killed him. That made Romeo very angry and he fought with Tybald. Soon Tybald was killed too and the prince of Verona decided that Romeo must leave Verona.
Some days passed and Juliet’s father told her that she must marry a young man whose name was Paris. Juliet did not know what to do. Then she went to Friar Lawrence for help. He listened to the girl and told her to go home and be ready to marry Paris. But the night before her marriage she must drink some medicine which will put her to sleep for forty-two hours. Juliet went home and did as the friar told her. Juliet’s parents thought that she was dead and put her into the family tomb.
Romeo heard that Juliet was dead and he was very unhappy. He came back to Verona and went to the tomb of Capulets. He looked at Juliet for a long time, kissed her on the lips and drank poison. At that moment Juliet woke up and saw Romeo. But the young man was dead and Juliet killed herself.

I have just read how an American library is organized. I wish we had computers in our libraries where all the books could be listed. Of course it will be very convenient. In our libraries we have catalogues where we look for the book by its title and the name of the author. There is nothing to be proud of as far as the organization is concerned. But there is a lot more we can be proud of: they are the books of our world famous and modern writers: Pushkin, Tolstoy, Lermontov, Aitmatov, Tsvetaeva, Bulgakov, Dostoevsky and many others.
On the whole I like our school library. As far as I know it is one of the best among the school libraries of our city. It’s very important for me. Really a good book is the thing I always take delight in. I have a lot of interesting and useful books at home, but from time to time I go to the library to look for something particularly interesting and thrilling. Of course I don’t care much about books for children because I’ve already grown out of them. Nowadays I often turn to the masterpiece of Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Pushkin and some other representatives of the 19th century. Even though I like them very much, sometimes it seems to me a bit boring to read them.
In every library one has to be ready for a long search to find something worth reading and one day I was very lucky as I came across a wonderful book of poetry. In this book I read about “The Silver Age”, about Akhmatova and Gumilyov who were familiar to me and about Irina Odoevtseva whose poetry and character impressed me greatly. Really she was a unique and original character. Poet George Ivanov wrote about her that her sole was young, she was keen on everything: beautiful dresses, female gossip and romance. She knew how to cheer up and encourage people, was happy and carefree. This book opened a new page of a Russian poetry for me.

A Gin.
Once a man and his wife went on a holiday to Switzerland.
They had a great time and on the last day of their stay they decided to play tennis. The wife could not play tennis very well, so her husband kept nagging her about it. He often said that if she was not careful, she would break the window of one of the expensive houses that were standing around. Finally, the wife got very nervous, lost control and by mistake sent the ball straight into the window of one of those expensive houses, standing around. The couple got very scared, but there was nothing to do, so they went to have a look at the damage, they had caused.
They went into that house and saw a broken window, and a broken bottle on the table. Suddenly there appeared a strange-looking man with a towel on his head. He looked at the husband and saw that he was much afraid, so he said, “Do not be afraid, kind people. I am a powerful Gin and, if you hadn’t broken the bottle, I would have still be kept a prisoner there. If you hadn’t arrived at this place, I would not have been able to see the day light again. I swore to myself that if somebody had freed me, I would have fulfilled three wishes of this man. So now you can have what you want, and each wish will cost you only one thousand dollars.”
The man started, “I wish I could have all the money in the world.”
“It is done for you,” replied the Gin.
“I wish my mother were the Queen of England, so I could inherit the title.”
“Done.”
“I wish all the countries chose me the President of the world.”
“No problem,” said the Gin. The happy family said goodbye and left. As they were passing the broken window, the Gin looked out and shouted to the husband. “Can I just ask you a little question?”-“Please, do,” answered the man.
“How old are you?-“I am forty-five,” replied the man.
“And how can you still believe in Gins?”

The Tikhonovs and the Weather.
The Tikhonovs are a typical Russian family. The only thing which is very strange about them is their attitude towards weather. Weather plays an important part in their life, because each member of the family prefers a different type of weather, so it is difficult for the family to agree about a lot of things.
The mother, Helen, loves it best when it is cold. For her there is nothing like a sunny frosty winter day when there is no wind and ice is sparkling on the branches of the trees. She also loves it when it snows and always wants to go out on days like that. Her love of cold can be explained by the fact that she was born in Siberia and her favourite sport is skiing.
Her husband Kirill loves autumn best of all. It is neither too hot nor too cold in autumn. The sky is a beautiful shade of blue and the leaves on the trees are pink, yellow, red and orange. The mixture of these colours creates a beautiful picture of autumn. Sometimes it rains, and a cold wind starts blowing, but then it only makes it more pleasant to sit at home and drink hot tea.
Their daughter Mary likes none of this. She cannot stand cold. The only seasons for her are summer and late spring. Mary enjoys life only when it is warm. She cannot live without heat. Her favourite temperature is anything above 30° Celsium. At heat waves when the sky is cloudless and there is no wind, so everybody hides in the shadow and drinks something cold, Mary lies in the sun and later boasts of a great suntan. The girl also loves spring for its May thunderstorms and showers when the nature is waking up and showing its young beauty.
This could be all very well, but the problem with the Tikhonovs is that they can never decide when to go out, when to have a family holiday, and weather they should have a picnic or not. Some days are too cold for Mary; others are too hot for her mother, or not bright and interesting enough for her father. So very often they just have to agree that tastes differ and look for some compromise.

English Meals.
I was eighteen when I came to England for the first time. I stayed with an English family, and many things were different from those that I knew and was used to.
Actually, everything was different- the way people speak, dress, drive their cars and most importantly-eat. I never thought food could be such a torture.
A modern English breakfast is mostly a help-yourself thing. Those who’d start telling you about bacon, eggs, grilled tomatoes and sausages, when asked about a typical English breakfast, are terribly out of fashion. You may still get such things in a hotel, but that is not something the English themselves have for breakfast.
In reality you open the fridge and choose something. You will be quite limited in your choice. Basically, you can have a cheese sandwich, some toasts with jam or cornflakes with milk. At least breakfast is not a social event, which means you can have it on your lap while reading a morning newspaper.
Then comes lunch. A typical English lunch leaves you hungry and consists of a sandwich and some coffee.
Then comes dinner. It is considered vulgar to have it earlier than 6 or 7 o’clock. In reality the English will have it at around 8. First of all dinner is a social event. Everybody has to be at table in time and stay there until everybody has finished eating. Every movement and gesture is a matter of etiquette. You sit with your napkin on your lap, your back is very straight, you do not reach for anything across the table. Before you can have anything, you offer it to everybody else first. If somebody asks you for salt, you pass both salt and pepper and God save you from passing salt only! It will be considered rude.
All that I have written here is true, and if you go to England, you will probably agree with me. However, now, having lived in England for a long time, I grew to love every bit of this diet.

A Father and His Child.
That Sunday the visitors of Hide Park who could usually sit on the benches, enjoy the sun and eat their lunch quietly were surprised by a strange man.
It was a young man with a pram. There was a baby in a pram, and it was crying loudly. So the young man had to make a stop and say softly:
“You should take it easy, Tom. You should keep calm, Tom. You should control yourself, Tom.”
Then the young father decided he could walk on, but the baby kept crying. The father had to stop and take a teddy bear out of the bag. He thought that it could help to calm the baby. Again he said softly:
“You have to take it easy, Tom. You have to keep calm, Tom. You have to control yourself, Tom.”
The young father started to push the pram again. After a few minutes the child began to cry. It cried louder and louder. The father put his hand into his pocket and took out some chocolate. He gave a piece to the baby and said firmly:
“You must take it easy, Tom. You must keep calm, Tom. You must control yourself, Tom.”
The baby did not stop crying. In fact it cried louder and louder. An old lady was watching the father. She came up to him and smiled. She said:
“You are doing very well, young man. You should always talk to the child in a nice and quiet voice like you are doing now.” Then she looked at the baby, smiled and asked:
“What is wrong, Tom? Why are you crying?”
The father looked very surprised and said quickly:
“I am Tom. The baby’s name is Mark.”
