“Mark Twain & His Characters ”

First Compere: Good afternoon, dear boys & girls! We are glad to meet you at our party.

Second Compere: Our school party is devoted to Mark Twain, the famous American writer.

Third Compere: Some of his books are very popular with the children in our country, in other countries of the world & in America of course.

Fourth Compere: What books are these? Do you know? (показывает на стеллаж с книгами) Yes! Yes you are right! The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Here is The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Prince and the Pauper and Life on the Mississippi. These books are great favourites not only with boys & girls all over the world, but also with grown-up readers.

First Compere: In these books Mark Twain shows the joys & sorrows of children with such deep understanding & love that children & grown-ups have a feeling that the books are about them.

Second Compere: There is also a strong satirical element & humour in these books.

Third Compere: Now, look at the main characters of the books. They will speak about themselves.

(Выходит мальчик. Это Том Сойер)

Tom: Hello, boys & girls! My name is Tom Sawyer. I am a village boy. I have many friends: Ben, Jimmy, Huckleberry Finn, Joe Happer, Becky & many others. I have a cousin, Mary, & half-brother Sid. We play together & fight, of course. We have many adventures, & the most important thing that we’ve found is a treasure box in a cave.

Aunt Polly: Glad to meet you, friends! I am Aunt Polly. Tom is my nephew. He is my deceased sister’s son. Poor thing! He often plays tricks on me & I get angry with him; but I can’t beat him. Oh, Tom, Tom! I love you so dearly, you do everything to break my old heart!

Becky Thatcher: Dear boys & girls! I’m Becky Thatcher. Once Tom & I lost our way in a cave. We were so frightened! (пауза) Well, Tom is always good & kind to the girls. If you don’t know anything about us, read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer & The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

First Compere: Now, I think it’s high time to begin speaking about the author of these books.

Second Compere: Mark Twain was a famous American writer. His real name was Samuel Clemens. Twain was his pen name.

Third Compere: He was born in 1835 & lived in the town of Hannibal on the Mississippi River. His Family was poor. He was the son of a lawyer.

Fourth Compere: Little Samuel spent his childhood in his native town. He liked the Mississippi very much & could easily swim in the river. The waters of this great river were his playground.

First Compere: He went fishing & swimming in the river & he was the leader in all the games.

Second Compere: He was a bright & lively boy. He had a lot of friends at school. And when he became a writer, he described them in his stories.

Third Compere: When Samuel was twelve years old – in 1847 – his father died. And the boy left school early & began to work. He helped his family. He learned the professions of printer & journalist at the town’s newspaper.

Fourth Compere: All his life Samuel was very fond of reading. He spent much time in libraries & began to write short humorous stories & published them in newspapers.

First Compere: In 1957s at the age of 20, he found a job on a ship travelling up & down the Mississippi.

(Выходит группа детей, они держат различные иллюстрации и читают стихотворение).

The ship is sailing

The flag is waving

Hello, my friends,

Hello, my friends.

The sun is shining

The stars are smiling

Hello, my friends, hello!

Through rains and thunders

We’ll see the wonders

With you, my friends,

With you, my friends.

We’ll be together

In any weather

With you, my friends, with you.

Second Compere: Here on a ship he got the idea for his future pen name “Mark Twain”, that is “mark two”. It was taken from the call of the Mississippi pilots when they measured the depth of the river. Later he used to speak about that time as the happiest period of his life & described it in his book Life on the Mississippi.

Third Compere: After some time the young man left for California.

Fourth Compere: There he worked with gold miners. And he began to write stories that he had heard, told & sent them to newspapers under the name of Mark Twain.

First Compere: Mark Twain didn’t get a good education, but he knew well the tales of Negroes, who lived along the Mississippi. Out west he met cowboys & men of the west.

Second Compere: Mark Twain knew several professions which gave him a knowledge of life & people & helped him find his true mission, that of a writer.

Third Compere: Mark Twain was fond of travelling. He travelled all over the United States, Europe, and Asia. He noticed the humorous side of life & was ready to laugh at them together with his readers.

Fourth Compere: It should be noted that American satirical literature began with Mark Twain.

First Compere: In 1876 when the writer was 51, he published The Adventures of Tom Sawyer & later The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn which sold very well.

Second Compere: Many events described in those books really took place & characters were taken from real life.

Scene 1

Aunt Polly: Tom! Tom! Tom! Where is that boy? Tom?!

Tom: Here I am (лицо перепачкано вареньем).

Aunt Polly: Oh, you have been in that pantry. What were you doing there?

Tom: Nothing.

Aunt Polly: Nothing! Look at your hands (Том смотрит). And look at your mouth. What is that?

Tom: I don’t know, Aunt.

Aunt Polly: Well, I know. It’s jam, that’s what it is (указывает на плетку на полу). Tom, hand me that switch!

Tom: Oh, look behind you, Aunt!

(Тетушка Тома оборачивается. Том убегает. Тетушка стоит в изумлении, затем начинает смеяться).

Scene 2

(Смена декорации: двор, забор, скамейка).

Aunt Polly: Tom, go and whitewash the fence.

Tom: Oh, Auntie, I can’t. I’ll do it… tomorrow.

Aunt Polly: Whitewash the fence, I say (ставит ведро, кисть, уходит).

Ben (с яблоком в руках): What are you doing?

Tom: I am whitewashing the fence!

Ben: Are you saying you like it?

Tom: Of course, I do. Does a boy whitewash a fence every day? (Том продолжает белить забор).

Ben: Tom, let me whitewash a little.

Tom: No, I can’t. Jim wanted to do it, but Aunt Polly did not let him.

Ben: Tom, do let me! I’ll give you my apple.

Tom: Apple!? Well, all right.

Billy: Hello, boys! What are you doing here?

Ben: Tom & I are whitewashing the fence.

Billy: You don’t think it is interesting, do you?

Ben: We do! Jim wanted to do it, but Aunt Polly did not let him.

Billy: Let me whitewash a little.

Ben: No, I won’t (они начинают бороться).

Tom: Stop that! Now it’s your turn to whitewash.

(Билли работает)

Tom: Now it’s your turn, Ben!

Billy: Well, it’s all done!

Aunt Polly: Oh, it’s all done! You are a good boy, Tom. You can work when you want to. Now, you may go & play.

Tom & the boys: Hurrah! Let’s run to the river.

The boys: Hurrah!

(Музыка. Выходит девочка в красивом воздушном платье. Это Бекки. Она читает отрывок из книги «Том Сойер» от имени Бекки).

The teacher Dr. Dobbins, had a book in his desk in the classroom. Every day he took that book out of his desk & read it while the pupils did written exercises. The book was always under lock & key. Of course, every pupil in the class wanted to look at it. One morning before school Becky Thatcher passed by the teacher’s desk & saw the key in the lock. There was nobody in the classroom. She opened the desk, took out the book & began to turn the pages. She saw a very beautiful picture in the book. At that moment Tom Sawyer opened the door & came into the classroom. Becky shut the book so quickly that she tore the picture. She began to cry.

- Tom Sawyer, you are a bad boy! Why did you come in like that & look at me? I know you are going to tell on me. Oh, what shall I do? What shall I do? Old Dobbins will beat me & the teachers never beat me in school.

She ran out of the classroom crying. (Поворачивается спиной, отходит в глубь сцены, замирает).

Tom stood in the classroom & thought: “The teachers never beat her in school? What’s a beating in school? That’s like a girl! I’m certainly not going to tell on her. But old Dobbins will ask who has torn his book. Nobody will answer, but when he comes to Becky, he will know it by her face”.

A few minutes passed. The other pupils came into the classroom. Then the teacher Dr. Dobbins came in, said “Good Morning” & the lesson began.

An hour passed. Then the pupils began to do their exercises & Dr. Dobbins opened his desk. He took out his book & saw the torn page. Tom looked at Becky.

Becky (поворачивается, проходит вперед и теперь они действуют вдвоем): Her face was white. The teacher looked at the class. He asked the pupils one after another: “Who tore this book?” One after another the pupils answered: “I didn’t”. Then Becky’s turn came. -  Rebecca Thatcher, did you tear the book? No, look at me. Did you tear this book?

Tom: At that moment Tom stood up & said, “I did it.”

Becky: Dr. Dobbins beat Tom with a long ruler. But Tom did not cry.

Tom: He was happy when he went to bed that night, for Becky’s last words in his ears were: “Tom, how could you be so noble!”

Becky: Oh, Tom! Tom, how could you be so noble!

Scene 3

(Комната. На кровати Том).

Tom: I don’t want to go to school. What can I do to stay at home? Oh! My tooth is loose. That’s wonderful!.. No, it won’t do. Aunt Polly will pull it out. Oh, what a wonderful idea has come to me! (Он опять ложится и начинает кричать). Sid! Sid

Sid: What has happened, Tom! Tom! What has happened to you?

Tom: Oh, Sid! I am dying. I am not angry with you.

Sid: Oh, Tom! You are not dying! Don’t!

Tom: I am not angry with you. I am not angry with Aunt Polly. Tell her so. And, Sid, give my cat with one eye to the new girl at school & tell her…

Sid: Oh, Aunt Polly, come! Tom is dying!

Aunt Polly: Dying!

Sid: Yes, come quickly!

Aunt Polly: Don’t say so! You, Tom! Tom! What has happened to you, my boy?

Tom: Oh, Auntie, look at my right hand! It is red & hot.

Aunt Polly: Oh, Tom, stop that nonsense! And get up!

Tom: But, Auntie, it is so hot, that I have forgotten about my tooth.

Aunt Polly: Your tooth? And what has happened to your tooth?

Tom: It’s loose.

Aunt Polly: Open your mouth. Well, you are right. Your tooth is loose. Sid, bring me some thread.

Tom: Oh, please, dear Auntie, don’t pull it out. It is all right now. (Тетя привязывает нитку. Возня. Тетя Поли закрывает Тома собой) Oh, oh! Oh, my tooth was all right. But I didn’t want to go to school.

Aunt Polly: Oh, Tom, so all this is because you don’t want to go to school. You want to go fishing. Tom, Tom, I love you so dearly, & you… now, get up quickly & get ready to go to school!

(Все уходят со сцены)

First Compere: Writing did not bring much money to Mark Twain, so he had to give lectures on literature & read his stories to the public.

Second Compere: He visited many countries. He lived in England for a time. In 1907 Oxford University gave Mark Twain an Honorary Doctorate of Letters.

Third Compere: Mark Twain died in 1910. He wrote many novels & short stories. (Показывает на книги.) I advise you to read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Life on the Mississippi & his short stories What is Man, The Mysterious Stranger.

Fourth Compere: We’ve said quite a lot about Mark Twain today. I think all the children & grown-ups have enjoyed the party & have had a good time here. Thank you. Good-bye!
