Soundtrack of Our Lives

познавательный аспект – знакомство с творчеством британского композитора сэра Эндрю Ллойда Вебера, популярными мюзиклами. Просмотр художественного фильма: “The Phantom of the Opera"

Pupil 1: Good afternoon dear friends.

Pupil 2: We are glad to see you at our party.

Pupil 1: The meeting of our party is dedicated to the highly successful British                                        composer of musical theatre – Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Pupil 2: I hope all of you will take an active part in it. Would you like to learn some facts from his biography?

Pupil 1: Andrew Lloyd Webber was born on the 22nd of March in 1948 in London.

Pupil 2: Throughout his career he has produced 16 musicals, 2 films, and Latin requiem mass.

Pupil 1: He has also accumulated a number of honors, including 7 Tony Awards, 3 Grammy Awards, an Oscar.

Pupil 2: An International Emmy, 6 Oliver Awards and a Golden Globe Award.

Pupil 1: The most famous of them are “Cats”, “The Phantom of the Opera”, “Jesus Christ Superstar”, “Aspects of Love”, “Sunset Boulevard”.

Pupil 2: The modern musical “Cats” attracts a lot of people. Its unusual plot, characters and brilliant music impress the public very much.

Pupil 1: It is based on the book by T.S. Eliot “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats”. It is about the life of cats that love and suffer like people.

Pupil 2: One of the most fascinating highlights of the musical is about naming cats. And now let’s listen to an extract from the musical and think, why it is difficult to name a cat

THE NAMING OF CATS

The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter

It isn't just one of your holiday games;

You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter

When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.

First of all, there's the name that the family use daily,

Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,

Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey —

All of them sensible everyday names.

There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,

Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:

Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter —

But all of them sensible everyday names.

But above and beyond there's still one name left over,

And that is the name that you never will guess;

The name that no human research can discover —

But THE CAT HIMSELF knows, and will never confess.

Pupil 1: Webber showed the real life and attitudes between cats like people. Love and death, friendship and treason, devotion and lie are the main ideas of this musical.

Pupil 2: And the original Grizabellas (Sarah Brightman and Betty Buckley) performing arguably the most famous of Lloyd Webber’s compositions, “Memory”.

Pupil 2: Another very popular musical is “The Phantom of the Opera”. It was written in 1988.

Pupil 1: It has been successfully played in London and New York since it’s been opened many years ago.

Pupil 2: The main characters in the musical are Christine Daae, her sweetheart Raoul and the Phantom.

Pupil 1: The life of Christine Daae, a soloist of the Paris Opera House, was a mystery. Her beautiful voice appealed to the hearts and minds of people.

Pupil 2: Christine loved Raoul de Chagny but she understood that they had no future. But Raoul believed that his love for Christine could break the prejudices.

Pupil 1: But a ghost who lived in the basement of the Opera House loved her too. And you know he was her musical teacher.

Pupil 2: This Phantom had a great power over her and guarded her carefully.

Pupil 2: You should watch this magnificent musical “The Phantom of the Opera”.
