                  LESSON :  “THE UK. LONDON AND ITS PLACES OF INTEREST”

                                                          6   FORM

Objectives:- to develope students’ skills  in oral speech and listening

                   - to develope skills in reading and writing

                   - to develope students’ pair work and communicative skills

                   - to widen the outlook and knowledge in history, geography

                   - to develope memory and the culture of speech

 Equipment: a tape recorder, multimedia system, cards to give out, map, pictures

Introduction of the lesson. Greeting.

                      PLAN:          

                - Warming up (with pronunciation drill)

               1. We discuss countries, capitals, flags, symbols.

               2. We read about the history of the Union Jack.

                          (a song to enjoy and relax)

               3. We listen to the text about London, guess and write the words.                            

               4. We ask the way (in dialogues) and  make reports about attractions.                            

               5. A quiz for us!

                - Summing up (with hometask and marks)

Warming up:

What language do we study? ... I hope everybody wants to know more information about the country of this language. Today we shall do it.

Pronunciation drill:  (with transcription symbols)

                                 shamrock, daffodil, attractions

1.  Speaking about the countries , etc.

Look at the map! What’s its full name? How many countries does it consist of? What is the capital of England? (Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland)?

 And now I need 4 students to help me.  ( Ss get  cards with  pictures )

S1:  What colour is the flag of England?

        What is the symbol of the country?

So, you can see all these flags here. And whose flag is this?  (of the UK, its name is Union Jack)

 Do you know why it looks like this?

We’ll learn it just now. Let’s read it and learn.

2. Reading and translating the text.

                              THE HISTORY OF THE “UNION JACK”

      What do you know about the flag of the United Kingdom and its history?

       The flag of the UK is called the UNION JACK. The design of the flag comes from three different flags. Four hundred years ago, England and Scotland had ( имели) different kings. But then, in 1603, James, the king of Scotland, also became the king of England. His new “ united kingdom” got ( получило) a new flag too. The 2 crosses, red cross of England and white diagonal cross of Scotland are united together.

        In 1801, Ireland also becomes part of the United Kingdom. You can see a red diagonal cross on a white background too.

        So, this is the Union Jack the UK has today.

    London is the biggest city in Britain. More than 9 mln people live and work there. London is one of the most important cities in the world. It is a centre for business and tourism.

    You can find many old and new beautiful parks in the city. The largest park in London is Hyde Park. It’s one of the most popular places of Londoners.

And what is the best way to see the attractions of London? – Of course, to visit it!

Here you see the London’s attractions. But how can we get to them?  

So, make up your dialogues and find the way. (cards in Russian with directions).

The texts of the reports:

1.     The Tower of London is almost a 1,000 (thousand) years old. It ‘s one of the most famous attractions in London. The Tower is on the river Thames, next to the famous Tower Bridge.

         There are guards at the Tower called “Beefeaters”, who wear red and black costumes and strange hats! They look after the Tower and the ravens that live there. The Beefeaters give guided tours, and they tell you about all the exiting things that happen here, for example, several ghost stories.

2.     Westminster Abbey is one of the most famous and beautiful churches in London. It is very old too. It is more than 9 hundred years old. It is a coronation place for kings  and queens. Many great writers are buried there: for example Charls Dickens and Rudyrd Kipling.

3.      The centre of London is Trafalgar Square. Some people say it’s the most beautiful place in London. You can see a tall column in the centre of the square. It is a monument to Admiral Nelson. Four bronze lions look at the square from the monument.
