Ход урока

I. Организационный момент. Приветствие.

Good morning, students! It's so nice to see you again. Today we are going to learn writing a formal letter to an official company and you will practice to use formal language.

Warming up question:

1) Have you ever traveled abroad?

2) Do you get advertisements of the traveling companies?

3) Would you like to travel to any foreign country?

4) Are you able to write a letter to a company director?

5) What kind of problems do the tourists have? Students' answers.

II. Обучение деловому письму.

1.  Imagine that you have got the advertisement of the "Marco Polo Voyages" that is inviting you to explore Marrakech. By the way do you know where Marrakech is? Right it's in Marocco.

2. Open your workbooks at page 32 and find ex. 18. Read it out, please.

Ex.18.

Read the advertisement below, then use the notes to ask polite questions, as in the example.

A. What questions can you have after reading the advertisement? Yes, the prompts are written on the margins. Let's make the correct questions.

1. Could I please book a single room?

2. Which meals does the price include?

3. Can the local guides speak English?

4. Does the price include extra excursion?

B. Reading the letter.

To write a formal letter asking for information we start with Dear Sir/Madam. In the first paragraph, we state the reason for writing the letter. In the main body, (paras 2-4), we ask questions about the information we need. We can use Firstly, Secondly, Finally etc, to introduce each paragraph. In the last paragraph, we usually say we hope to hear from the person soon. We end our letter with Yours faithfully, and our full name.

Ex.19.

Read the letter and answer the questions.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am planning to go on the seven-day tour of Marrakech advertised in your brochure. I hope you will be able to answer a few questions for me. Firstly, could please book a single room?

I am coming on the tour alone and I would not like to share a hotel room with another person. Secondly, I would like you to tell me which two meals the price includes. Will we have breakfast and lunch in the hotel and pay for our own dinner? Thirdly, I hope the local guides speak English. I am afraid I cannot speak any foreign languages, Finally, could you also tell me how much the excursion package will cost?

I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.

Yours faithfully,

Rebecca Burns

Test.

1) Rebecca starts her letter with Dear Sir/Madam because:

a) she doesn't know the person she's writing to;

b) the person she's writing to is a friend.

2) Which of the following does she use in her letter:

a) full verb forms;

b) long sentences;

c) abbreviations;

d) formal language.

3) Does Rebecca sound polite or friendly?

4) Has Rebecca included all her questions in the letter? Underline the sentences which include her points.

5) Which words does Rebecca use to list her questions?

6) Which of the sentences can start/end the letter?

a) Hi! What's up?

b) I am interested in the advertisement...

c) Do drop me a line.

d) I would appreciate an answer at your earliest convenience.

C. Answer the questions (1-6).

So now you know that the characteristic features of the official letter are:

• Non emotional language.

• Full verb forms.

• Long sentences.

• Formal language.

• Politeness.

D. Now look at another feature of the formal language. Does Rebecca use many questions in her letter? Are they similar to the questions we have written on the blackboard? Why are they not like the questions?

E.  Right, because they are 'indirect Questions". How are they different from the questions? They have some set phrases and the word order is like the word order in the statement. Turn to page 117 and study the rule.

Indirect Questions:

•  We use indirect questions to ask for information in a polite-way. They are used after expressions such as Do you know ..., Could you tell me ..., I wonder..., etc.

•  In indirect questions, we do not change the subject - verb order. (I wonder when John is coming back.)

•  When the indirect question is part of a question, we use a question mark. (Do you know where my book is?)

• When the indirect question is part of a statement, we use a full stop. (She doesn`t know where her brother is.)

III. Отработка построения косвенных вопросов.

Now look at the letter again and underline the indirect questions in the text. Let's practice some exercises to form the correct indirect questions.

Students do ex. 16 and ex. 9.

Ex.16.

John is on a day trip to Oxford. He needs some information. Help him ask the questions, as in the example.

1) Could you tell me where the post office is, please?

2) Do you know..........................................................

3) Could you tell me.....................................................

4) Do you know..........................................................

5) Could you tell me.....................................................

6) Do you know..........................................................

Ex. 9

Rewrite the direct questions below as indirect questions, as in the examples.

1) Where is the theatre? - Do you know where the theatre is?

2) Why did she leave? - I wonder why she left.

3) Who's on the phone?-Could you tell me........................

4) What's his address? -I wonder.....................................

5) When did he buy these cakes? - Do you know...................

6) Which one does she prefer? - Could you tell me.................

7) Where does he live? - Do you know...............................

8) What time did she go to bed? -I wonder..........................

9) Which film did he watch? - Do you know........................

10) Where can I find a toyshop? - Could you tell me...............

IV. Практическая работа с деловыми письмами.

And again we are having the advertisement of the "Inca Travel", they invite us to discover Peru in August but we have some questions again, as we are interested in the tour.

Make the questions, please, using the prompts:

1) Firstly, is the flight to Lima direct?

2) Secondly, will I share a room with another person?

3) What is more, will the sightseeing tours be by bus or train?

4) Finally, can I buy traditional clothes in the Indian highland villages?

Will you suggest suitable supporting sentences for each sentence?

•  ... because I don't want to change flights.

•  ... I`d like to have a room to myself.

•  ... I hope it is by train because I hate traveling by bus. •... I want to buy a present to my friend.

Ex.20.

a) Use the notes in the advertisement below to write questions, as in the example.

1) Firstly, is the flight to Lima direct?

2) Secondly.............................?

3) What is more........................?

4) Finally................................?

b) Suggest suitable supporting sentences for each sentence (1 to 4).

Ex.21.

Use your answers in ex. 20 and the plan below, to write a letter to Inca Travel asking for information about the tour (120-150 words). Use the letter in ex. 19 as a model.

I'd like you to use your answers and the plan of ex. 20 to write a letter to Inca Travel asking for information about the tour (120-150 words). Do it at home and don't forget to use indirect questions and formal language. Good luck, the lesson is over!

Suggested answer:

Dear Sir / Madam,

I am planning to go on the ten-day tour of southern Peru advertised in the Times newspaper. I would like you to answer a few questions for me.

Firstly, could you tell me if the flight is direct to Lima? I don't want to change flights because I hate waiting at airports.

Secondly, I would like you to tell me if I have to share a room. I'd like to have a room to myself

What is more, is the sightseeing tour by bus or train? I hope it is by train because I don't like traveling by bus. Finally, can I buy traditional clothes in the Indian villages because I want to buy a present for my friend? I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.

Yours faithfully,

Ted Brooks
