27.02. Communications. Getting ready for the USE
Task 1
Let’s listen to the professor of London University about successful essay writing. Then you should answer the questions:
-What kind of essay is he talking about?
-What’s the difference between an opinion letter and a pro-con letter?
- How many paragraphs should you have?
-What are they?
-How many sentences should you have in introduction/paragraph 2/paragraph 3/conclusion?
Task 2 Find the odd words
If I had to say it what my hobby is, I suppose the answer would have to be reading. It all started in early childhood when my father used to enjoy much making up stories for my brother and myself. This was a very popular every night at bedtime. As we grew older, we turned to books and by the time I was ten, I had a large collection of these children’s literature.

However, a lot of people still believe that friendship is a union of the equal. They tend to make friends with the representatives of their own social circle and financial position. Most people are convinced that friendship will be ruined as soon as your friend is promoted or succeeds in some other way.
I strongly feel that a real friend is a person who doesn't only help you and give you advice. A real friend should never envy you if you are more successful. And if he does, then he is not your friend. To my mind, friendship between people with different financial standing is rare, but possible.
To conclude, I'd like to say that a real friend is not only a person who helps you in need, but the one who doesn't turn away from you in case you are luckier, richer or more successful than he or she is. Friendship must not end when success comes. So we can paraphrase the proverb: "A friend who never envies you is a friend indeed".
D) Different people have different notions of what kind of person a true friend should be. Most of them think that a friend is a person who understands you, shows kindness and sympathy, has similar tastes, interests and life philosophies. You can always trust your friend and share your hardships with him or her. Besides, a true friend is always ready to help you and to support you in times of need or crisis.

In recent years fast food like McDonald's or Kentucky Fried Chicken is becoming more and more popular. Some people believe that eating in convenient shops is the best and most comfortable way to save time. Others reckon, however, that this sort of food is quite unhealthy and may cause damage to our body and health.
On one hand, fast food like French fries or hamburgers tend to contain such harmful ingredients as preserves and aromatizers. These additives are dangerous because of their unnatural way of production and addictive, so that you cannot stop eating. Moreover, due to lack of nutrients, people do not satisfy their hunger. After a few months of consuming convenient foods you will see changes in your body: excess weight, difficulty to go fast. Healthy food visa versa often seems tasteless. If you want to feel taste of natural meals again, give up eating oily fries and drinking Coke!
On the other hand, there are millions of people, who have not got enough time for cooking, whereas shops and cafes, giving an opportunity to buy any dish possible, are the quickest way to still/lust hunger. Also, fast food is extremely diverse and tasty. There are thousands of restaurants that offer all kinds of food to everybody's taste: from Japanese sushi to American hamburgers.
In conclusion, I want to say that there are a lot of fors and againsts consuming fast food. But people should stop doing harm to their bodies. Besides, it is better to spend more time in the kitchen than become fat and addicted.
Task 6 Write 3 pros and 3 contras to the sentence you have.

Nowdays fast food becomes more and more popular. People think that it`s very comfortable way to save much time. At the same time other people suggest that it`s not healthy and does harm to our body.
As for me people should tend to eat it as less as possible because it`s very unhealthy. Firstly, it contains a lot of harmful chemicals such as preservatives and aromatizers. They damage peoples' health because they are not natural and some ingredients work as drugs: people can not to stop eat it. Secondly, these products don`t have any vitamins or minerals, that`s why people can`t satisfy their hunger. And a few hours later they want to eat again. As a result people become fat and unhealthy.
On the other hand, busy people, who haven`t got enough time for cooking, can eat faster and easier. Also fast food is testy. There are a lot of restaurants, which can propose any food, whether American burgers or Japanese sushi.
But people shouldn`t give up their health for time and delicious taste.
In conclusion I want to say that people should cut down on fast food, because it is not a good way to save time and it is very unwell.
Task 6 Write 3 pros and 3 contras to the sentence you have.
Many people feel private education gives young children a better chance of having a successful life.
